A huge "thank you" to a reader for alerting me to this: Continental Resources is moving one of their rigs, currently drilling in Bowman County, to South Dakota.
For newbies, South Dakota is the state just south of North Dakota. South Dakota is known for its remarkably warm winters -- my dad grew up in Newell, South Dakota, near Rapid City, south of Belfield, North Dakota, and he talks of the "South Dakota banana belt" all the time.
I assume CLR is moving the rig to South Dakota to drill and not to continue south back to the Mississippi Lime in Kansas, or the Eagle Ford, south of San Antonio.
If he does move the rig that far south, he should move the rig to the center of the Sand Hills (alternate spelling: Sandhills) in Nebraska just to scare folks. Not to drill. Just to set it up it beside the highway in the middle of the Sand Hills. Maybe roll out some 36-inch pipe along the road just for the fun of it.
The rig is Cyclone 1 drilling #22856.
From what I heard it is moving to Buffalo, SD. Another Red River river well. When I see them drilling a Tyler/Three Forks well I will get excited. Oh well the SD rig count doubled to 2.
ReplyDeleteAgree 100%. "SD rig count doubled to 2." -- as my daughter would text: LOL.
DeleteThank you for taking time to comment.
I actually did a cement job on that rig back in April maybe? I still have a picture and just looked back at it and it is Cyclone 1. It was north of Buffalo, SD.
DeleteIncredible; small world. Thank you for taking time to comment. Have a great summer. Thank you for helping out in the Bakken.

Thank you. I've added that link at my "Data Links" page which includes links to South Dakota, Montana, Utah, etc.
DeleteWow, small world. I read your blog all the time. My family moved to Newell in 65. I graduated from there in 71. When did your dad leave the area?
ReplyDeleteMy dad physically left Newell a long, long time ago, but it is clear he is still much attached to it.
DeleteHe was born in 1922; joined the US Coast Guard/US Navy the day his "draft" letter arrived. After WWII, he returned to Sioux Falls, and shortly after that to Bismarck, and then Williston.
I graduated from Williston High School in 1969.
You can find more about my dad by googling "oksolflessnerhistory."
Hi Bruce, just wanted to pass on my thanks for your blog. My family has some acreage just north of Rhame, ND. Waiting for someone to start asking to lease those mineral rights. "Hurts" to hear a rig leaving Bowman Cnty, but hopeful it means that areas Tyler formation is being explored more.
ReplyDeleteThank you. And good luck with your minerals. There used to be two rigs in the southwest part of the state on the NDIC GIS map server; unfortunately none right now, but that's sure to change.
