Global Warming Hits Chernobyl

The New Zealand Herald is reporting:
A section of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine has collapsed under the weight of snow, officials say, raising new concerns about the condition of the facility that was the site of the world's worst nuclear accident.
Remember: just last week -- "heaviest snowfall in century hits Moscow."

I can't make this stuff up. A "thank you" to "anon 1" for sending the story.

  1. In 6-8 weeks all this massive warming will cause floods of the century..Usually the deep snow causes a late spring, the higher angle of the sun has to melt the snow and when it goes it goes fast..that how it was in bad winters in Northern MN..

    1. Yes, it's too bad "we" haven't been working on projects to trap / save / divert this water.

    2. Don

I learned late in life that in ND, the fast warm up is because the sun warms the land which warms the air. The snow blocks the sun from the land until it melts. So, it stays cold until enough snow melts so the sun can warm enough land, then the warm land warms the air. And the land stays warm after sunset. It was useful to learn, and embarrassing that I hadn't known. It also means that the spring warm up will vary with snow cover. Lots of snow will delay the warmth, and then the stronger sun will warm exposed land fast and the melt will be fast. The result is unfortunate. More snow = faster melt. Less snow = slower melt (the sun isn't as strong or long when the land is exposed enough to get warm. Also, exposed land can warm enough to absorb water, so that also causes a bigger flood when land is protected by snow than if there is little snow. Rats.

If you are the Don who feeds Bruce all the good stuff, I enjoy and appreciate it. Thank you!

    3. I appreciate all the great links sent to me. Thank you.

So, with regard to melt off: sort of a double whammy: more snow = faster melt. And more snow = more water.

And, of course, upstream is what we don't see coming. I don't know what the snow pack is in the Rocky Mountains which will "drive" the Missouri River downstream.

  2. A new generation has been borne since the infamous Chernobyl nuclear incident. Got to reestablish fear in people again. It is such a useful tool to control them with. All the past hand wringing over it got to the point of the ridiculous. The public got bored and ignored all the noise about it.

Time for the silliness to begin anew. "Listen up children to this really scary story that those stupid people of the past have did to you".
