One important observation in the Bakken is that most Fracture Driven Interactions or FDIs result in increased parent well productivity.  [Should I say, wow, wow, wow?]
The positive impact of FUls may be due to the un-cemented completions that are typical for most parent wells in the Bakken
This was a key observation that contributed to the discovery of ADD. 
Over the past 10 years, extensive field measurements were used to calibrate fracture geometry and reservoir simulation models.
These models were the other piece to the ADD puzzle, enableing the evaluation of the ADD concept.

The modeling suggested that there is a potential to "augment" drainage by placing open-hole laterals in between the standard wells prior to fracturing. This paper documents the "discovery process" from field observations to detailed modeling.
The first ADD well was drilled in 2021, about 300 ft from the nearest offset "standard" well. There were four "standard" wells on this pad and extensive data acquisition, with permanent fiber optics and lateral pressure gauges in two wells and deployable fiber in the other two wells.
These measurements characterize the hydraulic fractures that intersected the ADD well. Upon flowback, the ADD wel produced frack sand and higher than expected total fluid rates. With 2.5 years of production, the productivity of the ADD well is about 40% of the "standard" offset wells, validating the ADD concept.
Two more ADD wells were drilled in 2022 to evaluate the limits of ADD productivity, confirming that ADD productivity decreases as distance increases from the offset standard wells.
ADD could lead ot a step-change inproductivity and recovery in unconventional developments.

Sometimes It's In The Very Fine Print -- Downspacing In The Bakken -- August 18, 2016

I'm going over the most recent Mike Filloon contribution to SeekingAlpha again. I don't think he mentioned this in his narrative, and I don't think I've seen it elsewhere. Here's the graphic. See if you can spot something fairly significant.



The graphic is from Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research, undated. Besides the obvious multiple formations that are highlighted, note the second bullet:
Middle Bakken and Three Forks-1 zones have been largely derisked. Confidence in downspacing from 320-acre well spacing is key catalyst for more resource credit for the play.
That one line could be interpreted a number of ways. But I think it's pretty clear, based on "downspacing from 320-acre well spacing," that analysts have already factored in 320-acre spacing for the middle Bakken and the first bench of the Three Forks.

I think regular readers of the blog have felt we've "always been there" -- at 320-acre spacing for both the middle Bakken and the first bench. I assume the analysts mean two middle Bakken wells/section and two TF-1 wells/section or eight wells per the standard 1280-acre spacing unit in the Bakken. If so, yes, we've been there for quite some time. (In fact, I already have a tag, "320_Acre_Spacing." See tags associated with this post for similar tags and similar posts.)

The analyst's do not specify "good" Bakken from "better" or "best" Bakken. This seems to imply an average across the basin. In some areas we are well beyond 8 wells in one standard 1280-acre drilling unit. In fact, if we can drill along section lines (in an overlapping 2560-acre unit, for example), the better and the best Bakken should easily be able to support six MB and six TF-1 wells in a 1280-acre unit. With 660-ft spacing, it's more than that.

Just idle chatter. Don't quote me on this. Keep it a secret.

At FAQs, question #2 (FAQs are not always updated; FAQs have opinions and facts are interspersed and I don't necessarily point that out):
2. How many wells will "they" drill in a section? How many wells in all in the North Dakota Bakken? It is estimated that up to 50,000 wells will be needed for the Bakken Pool. -- current as of May, 2013. The number of wells per section continues to increase. Goldman Sachs has a graphic, 2016, suggesting 320-acre downspacing is the norm in MB and TF-1. Back in August, 2012, the NDIC dockets suggest there would be up to 16 wells in a 1280-acre spacing unit in the "core" Bakken. In the June, 2013, dockets, the "norm" for 1280-acre spacing units seems to be increasing to 10 wells but CLR is moving toward 17, 24, or more wells per spacing units. In late 2013, CLR had pilot projects for 34 wells in a drilling unit of 1280 acres (two sections). And:
In a January, 2013, presentation, the Director, NDIC, suggested that it may take as many as 48 wells/spacing unit to drill out some areas of the best Bakken. At the time he said that, most spacing units were two sections. Therefore, Lynn Helms was suggesting as many as 24 wells/section in the best part of the Bakken which includes productive formations from the middle Bakken through ALL lower benches of the Three Forks.

Random Post On Increased Density Well Drilling Inspired By A Reader's Comment -- August 6, 2014

Note: in long posts like this, I seldom double check them for typographical or grammatical errors for several days. I assume there are factual errors as well. Don't use this as a source of information for anything that might be important in your life. 

I get the feeling that the definition of "density drilling" in the Bakken will be in the eye of the beholder.

An analogy: CLR trademarked "Eco-Pad" for its four-well pad sites. I haven't heard the term "Eco-Pad" used in a long time (so the trademark must have worked) but everyone (except OXY, it seems) has gone to pad drilling in the Bakken.

So it is with density drilling. This is being posted without much research or thought put into it, but a long time ago, in a place far away, the consensus was this: surface owners would see only one oil well per section (one mile by one mile, 640 acres).

Then BEXP came along with the Olson wells and Harold Hamm came along with the Bice wells and all of a sudden, we had two long horizontals going north, and two long horizontals going south, all from the same four well-pad.

It was obvious at that point that fracking was not particularly effective more than 500 feet radially from the borehole. To the best of my knowledge, this blog was the first blog that had no advertising and no subscription, and written by a layperson, that talked about this. I opined that we would see up to six wells across a one-mile section (one formation).

Shortly after the cat was let out of the bag, or as they say in Norway, after the lutefisk started to smell, CLR announced two density projects, the specifics of which I have long forgotten.

I think by the strict definition of "increased density" wells, the oil companies mean very, very close spacing of wells in the same formation, as little as 660 feet apart. [There must be something magical about 660 feet. I assume it has to do with spacing from the section lines. By the way, with regard to the XXX-XX-XXX format for social security numbers, the string "666" is never used for the first three numbers. I read that yesterday in a Social Security Bulletin issued in 2009. But I digress.]

Some readers might think that 12 or 14 wells in one section constitute "increased density" wells. Not necessarily. If three wells target four separate formations (MB, TF1, TF2, TF3), twelve wells altogether, that would technically not be a "increased density pilot project." I suppose. But then again, whatever it's called, it's probably in the eye of the beholder. [Speaking of which, if the eye belongs to Algore, it's probably an eyesore; if the eye belongs to a mineral rights owner, its $$$$$$; and, if the eye belongs to the surface owner, it's a right-brain (emotion) vs left-brain (rationality) cognitive dissonance problem. But again I digress.

This brings me to the Atlanta wells in Baker oil field. I track the Atlanta wells here. When I get the time I have to update the Atlanta wells to post which wells target which formations. If the wells target only two formations (the MB and TF1, which we used to call the "upper Three Forks") then it should be considered an increased density project, although perhaps not a "pilot." Perhaps a "co-pilot."

Some time ago, I posted a list of what CLR called their density projects; they did not include the Atlanta wells for some reason. At that link, these are the CLR density projects as of that date of the original post: Hawkinson, Tangsrud, Rollefstad, Wahpeton, Hartman, Mack, Lawrence. I did not link the source for calling these "CLR's density projects" so .... whatever.

The other bad news: I use multiple tags to identify posts with information about increased density wells. I will have to work on that; maybe this weekend.

Perhaps one of the better ones, posted on December 29, 2013, subtle change in CLR's proposed horizontal placement in the better Bakken? In addition, there are cases pending before the NDIC that are beyond the pale. For example:
Update on the section in Mandaree oil field in which EOG could place "not more than 32 wells in one 640-acre unit." No new wells, but the IPs and cumulative production for wells sited in this section have been updated.
Someday, one of my granddaughters will write the book on increased density projects in the Bakken. It will be titled: On The Evolution of Increased Density Well Drilling In The Bakken, Volume 6. The illustrations will be done by the other granddaughter.

By the way, as you get to older and older links, you may run into a "broken" link in which the "blogger app" says the site is not available. That has to do with the fact that my blog was hacked awhile back. I had to change the URL. Nothing else changed. So if you get a broken link to a milliondollarway blog, don't panic. Simply replace "milliondollarway.blog.com" or whatever it was, with "themilliondollarway.blogspot.com" and it should work fine. The "the" is all-important, but so is the rest of it. I've fixed a lot of the links, but I'm really only back to 2012. And this blog goes all the way back to 2010, I think. [I deleted the original blog which went back to 2007 because it did not contract specifications.]

As long as I'm talking about broken links, a lot of linked stories in regional newspapers are archived after a few months, and require a paid subscription to reach them. Same with RBN Energy, I believe. All the links to the "Bakken Discussion Group" are broken. It's a sad story; a lot of incredibly good historical information is lost to the general public. Links to "The Bakken Discussion Group" should be intact.

KOG has two pilot tests going on. Results from one are starting to be reported. The 12-well test on a single 1280-acre spacing unit will target the middle Bakken with 6 horizontals, the first bench of the Three Forks with 3 horizontals, and the second bench of the Three Forks with 3 horizontals. (There are some additional subtleties if the test proves to be a success and adjacent spacing units are involved. That's where overlapping spacing units become important.)
