Slow And Serious, Part 7 -- November 5, 2022

Investing: best years of investing in front of us.

Consider the source, a goldbug, but I can't disagree.

"Expect five years more of problematic inflation."

Two points:

  • the gap between investors and savers will widen immensely;
  • this year and next will be the best two years to buy a new house.

Investing: where the money is flowing. Link here. Reassuring.

  • my allocation, twice a month, each and every month, remains:
    • Buffett, blue-chip: 40%
    • beat down infrastructure (mostly tech, copper): 30%
    • energy (oil): 20%
    • mRNA: 10%

Quarterly Lease Sales -- November, 2022

Link here.

I've been following these quarterly leases a long, long time. In terms of the number of leases, this is the largest lease in quite some time. The Triple T, Inc, dominates in number of parcels.

Note: Ward County (Minot); ten years ago I was told that Ward County would be a surprise.

Flashback from May, 2019:Observations:

  • this was a most active auction in terms of number of tracts, and counties involved
  • look at Ward County, 91 tracts: years ago I was told by a "hotshot" driver that there was a river of oil all the way to Minot; I remember that quote well, and exactly when/where I heard it
  • 41 tracts in Billings County
  • I assume Triple T has been around before but Triple T was really, really active this auction
  • I don't know for whom Triple T is buying but I have my "suspicions"
  • it's hard to believe that after all these years, the state of North Dakota still has acreage to sell/lease
Link here. May, 2019 -- online.

Now, back to the November, 2022, lease sales results.

Billings:

  • six parcels
  • all Northern Energy Corporation except on Norra Resources
  • 40- and 80-acre parcels; two went for $121 and $126 / acre bonus

Burke:

  • ten parcels
  • most of them Northern Energy; also, Norra Resources, Interwest Petroleum Corp
  • all 80-aree parcels; all went for less than $30 / acre bonus

Divide:

  • nine parcels
  • Northern Energy (3); Hunt Oil (3); Phoenix Captital (2), Anderson Oil Ltd
  • mostly 80-acre parcels; one went for $504 / acre bonus;

Golden Valley:

  • one parcel;
  • Yockim Resource Exploration
  • an 80-acre parcel; $52 / acre bonus

McKenzie:

  • six parcels
  • Northern Energy (4); Phoenix Capital; Iron Horse Royalties
  • a few parcels above $400 / acre bonus but then mostly small bonuses

Mountrail:

  • eighty-nine parcels
  • the bulk of these parcels went to The Triple T, Inc;
  • others: Phoenix Capital Group; Iron Horse, Royalties; Advanta Resources; Lynx Oil;
  • mostly $1.00 / acre; some around $250 / acre bonus;

Ward:

  • two-hundred-eleven
  • almost all The Triple T, Inc
  • Leomac, LLC (4);
  • mostly $1.00 / acre bonus
  • a few as high as $556 / acre bonus

Slow And Serious, Part 6 -- November 5, 2022

YouTube: keeps getting better.

  • I dislike all the ads but ...
    • and that's the reason a lot of folks choose Hulu rather than YouTube TV though YouTube.com is not YouTube TV
  • YouTube.com has made subtle changes to its "front page presentation"; very subtle but improved
  • the HBO documentary on Robin Williams is now on YouTube.com without commercial interruptions;

a) you are not paying attention;
b) you can't interpret graphs; or,
c) both

Snapshot:

It should be noted that "flu season" really hasn't started yet this year.

We've talked about this graphic many times. The question remains:

The vaccine graph:

I got a "flu shot" every year while on active duty during the last ten years of my service. I retired in 2007. I haven't had a "flu shot" since 2007.

I'll get a flu shot this year.

Slow And Serious, Part 3 -- November 5, 2022

How much money can "one" make on vaccines? How much money can "one" make on the Covid-19 vaccine?

See this post for background.

Let's start here:

Germany is "broke." Really, really "broke."

Meanwhile, China has no effective vaccine. None. Nada. Zilch.

And China has a "zero-Covid" policy without an effective vaccine. Not even one that is 47% effective.

So, how does Germany hope to pay for their Chinese imports?

Yup, you guessed it. Sell the Chinese an effective vaccine.

You can bet this is not lost on Pfizer or Moderna.

And you can bet China is looking at multiple sources with 1.5 billion people and a "zero-Covid" policy.

By the way, isn't it interesting that just after the Scholz visit the Chinese are talking about opening up their country -- with regard to Covid -- again.

Are the dots connecting?

How much money might Pfizer make?

Slow And Serious, Part 2 -- November 5, 2022

A while back -- not that long ago -- we discussed the prices of vaccines in light of the price Pfizer planned to charge for the Covid-19 vaccine. My pet peeve at the time: milleennial mainstreeam media "journalists" failing to put things into perspective.

See these two links for background: here and here

I've had the two primary Pfizer vaccines, and have had the two boosters, the most recent one recommended only for those at high risk and over the age of 65 (at the time -- I don't know what the recommendations are now). I assume I will be getting a booster every six months. Maybe, maybe not. Depends.

But yesterday, after years of putting it off I got the first of a series of two "shingles" vaccine injections at our local supermarket pharmacy.

Over the past weekend I attended church in Portland where my son-in-law is a pastor (his calling, but not his day job) where two seniors told me the horrors of shingles. Having heard from them in church, I assume it was God talking to me through them.

So, I got my first shingles shot.

Look at the price:

$178.11 per dose

Medicare will pay about $50 and the VA will pay the rest.

And this is a two-shot series, almost $400 for the vaccine.

Early on, folks were also surprised that one Covid-19 vaccine did not offer life-long protection. LOL. That's pretty much the norm for all vaccines.

Disneyland

Speaking of prices.

A few weeks ago -- months ago? -- we also got into the prices Disneyland charges.

Let's put the price of Disneyland (southern California) into perspective, again something no one ever seems to do.

This, from social media today:

Family of four: ski lift tickets for one day, about $1,100.

And, each member will rent $200 worth of ski equipment: $800.

And lunch. And dinner. And overnight accommodations. No one flies all the way to Colorado for one day of skiing. So, a second day for the family, another $2,500 for one day of skiing.

Now, the prices for Disneyland.

From Disney's webpage:

So, for two days, $143 / day or as inexpensive as $83 / day.

And you won't have to buy $200 worth of equipment just to get in.

And, I can guarantee you, one can find less expensive accommodations in southern California than in the mountains of Colorado.

But it gets better. One can actually visit Disneyland for as little as $3.00 / day.

Slow And Serious, Part 1 -- Saturday, November 5, 2022

So much to blog about.

This is what we'll be talking about today.

A little investing: buy-and-hold strategy.

A little investing: laser-focused on dividends.

Buffett: the long game.

Big Pharma: just how much money can be made with the Covid-19 vaccine?

Disneyland prices: $3.05 / day?

Greta: German for fraud.

Qualcom: good news.

Selena Gomez: nice to see.

Buffett: The Long Game

He waited and waited and waited -- ever since 2009: link here.

I bought and held OXY for a short period; don't hold it now. I've been accumulating CVX "forever." I began when I bought Texaco when it declared bankruptcy. It was one of the top five best investment decisions I ever made.

Buy And Hold

CAH: link here

Years ago CAH ended up in my portfolio. I have long forgotten the details. I don't know if I made a conscious decision to buy a few shares or if it was part of a spin-off. I could easily check the history but I have no interest in finding out. All I know is that year after year I would see CAH in my portfolio, wonder why it was there, but would never do anything with it. Just let it sit there. Then this week:

 Does it even pay a dividend? Yup, 2.5%.

Enough for now. The other stories to follow on new posts.
