Urban Living -- For The Archives -- July 9, 2022

Tonight: grilled salmon, potatoes, and a martini.

I've been binge-watching "Only Murders In The Building." Tina Fey, an urban linguist genius. Not under-rated. It's just such a treat to be able to see her on television.

In the pool twice today, will visit one more time today, tonight about 9:00 p.m.

Josephine Tey was a pseudonym used by Elizabeth MacKintosh (25 July 1896 – 13 February 1952), a Scottish author. 
Her novel The Daughter of Time was a detective work investigating the role of Richard III of England in the death of the Princes in the Tower, and named as the greatest crime novel of all time by the Crime Writers' Association. 
Her first play Richard of Bordeaux, written under another pseudonym, Gordon Daviot, starred John Gielgud in its successful West End run.

Speaking of Amazon, I don't think folks realize how much on-line commerce there is in urban areas. As mentioned before, during the week, we can expect upwards of four Amazon Prime vans to visit our apartment complex in the morning and then another four before the end of the day, as late as 9:00 p.m.

Today, a very, very large white, old, almost dilapidated box van arrived in the complex. My first thoughts, a crime of some sort was about to take place, but on close looking, there was a decal on the side of the van, just next to the right side door, measuring about eight inches by four inches with a vehicle ID number, and the letters: UPS. Obviously a gig worker who drove out to UPS and waited in line to take any deliveries UPS might have. 

Gig worker.  I specifically used that term because it will come up a lot in any discussion regarding the "labor participation force."

Hot In Oklahoma; Hot In Texas -- July 9, 2022

ERCOT: current temperature in DFW, north Texas -- 104°F

  • it looks like electricity demand has peaked
  • it appears the grid held with electricity to spare
  • operating reserves: 3,029 MW
  • it looks like demand peaked at 77,227 or thereabouts
  • committed capacity at same time: 78,886 or thereabouts
  • if folks recall, the forecast was for wind to "fail us."
  • if so, solar "saved us." LOL.
  • what a way to run an electricity grid: on hope. LOL.

For comparison purposes, total renewable energy provided today in ISO-NE was slightly more than 1K MW compared to ERCOT's 12K MW.

Meanwhile, ISO-NY, total load today maxed out at about 22K MW. About 1.5% of that was wind = 0.33K MW. 

Think of all the offshore wind turbines the Biden administration envisions off shore Rhode Island and Long Island. All those big, beautiful wind turbines.

North Dakota -- Food Desert Update -- July 9, 2022

Some may remember this story from 2011. 

Flashback: on October 14, 2011, I had a link to a Dickinson Press story in which it was reported that Michelle Obama stated that North Dakota was a food desert. The post is here, but the link to the Dickinson Post story no longer works. Insert sad face here.

In the United States of America, national funds were allocated to address food-desert areas for the first time in 2011, following a series of city and state financing efforts, which began with the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative in 2004. 
To date, such public efforts have provided more than USD 220 million, which has leveraged more than USD 1 billion in private investment through public-private partnerships, to fund nearly 1,000 retailers serving areas of limited food access in 35 states. 
In its most recent 2017 report, the USDA’s Economic Research Service determined that the number of census tracts that met the classification of “low access” had declined measurably since 2010, indicating a general improvement in the proximity of supermarkets to residents across the country. 
Specifically, the US saw a 15 percent decline in the number of individuals living in a limited-supermarket-access area. 
From 2010 to 2016, the share of the population living in limited-supermarket-access areas declined gradually, from 6.8 percent of the population to 5.6 percent. 
State by state, the greatest improvement in increasing food access, as denoted by the percentage decrease in limited-supermarket-access-area populations, was witnessed in North Dakota (41 percent), Idaho (41 percent), Iowa (40 percent), Rhode Island (38 percent), Wisconsin (36 percent), Alabama (35 percent), Kansas (35 percent), New York (34 percent), Arkansas (32 percent) and Indiana (32 percent). 
In contrast, several states have experienced a substantial worsening of the problem, including Maine (with an increase of 27 percent) and Nevada (with a rise of 26 percent).

My hunch: this had nothing to do with national policy as affecting North Dakota but rather a demographic change in rural-to-urban migration and the Bakken revolution, but it makes for a good story.

    MRO Activity In Bailey Oil Field -- July 9, 2022

    MEMO to self: come back in six months to see halo effect of surrounding wells. 

    When updating the incredible MRO wells at this post, it was noted that several MRO wells recently came off line which usually suggests activity, such as fracking newly drilled holes.

    Wow, wow, wow. Pay dirt! LOL.

    Without the NDIC GIS map, it is much more difficult to sort things out, but with a little sleuthing, one can find a few new things. 

    In NENW 18-146-93 and lot 1 section 18-146-93, no less than fourteen MRO wells are on drl status. Checking the scout tickets most, if not all, were spud in September, 2021, and one of the fourteen is now producing, suggesting that MRO has completed these fourteen wells.

    Note that in the NDIC spreadsheet below, the 2nd column and the 7th columns remain empty:

    • column 2: CTB No -- centralized tank battery number -- "battery" to which oil will be temporarily stored awaiting "runs"
    • column 7: DTD -- completed depth in feet

    Big Oil's Profits -- Robert Rapier -- Oilprice -- July 9, 2022

    This was first posted back on June 18, 2022. I'm not sure why it's popping up again. It’s a good read but won't change things for anyone. Idle rambling on something we already know.

    While gasoline prices are still $1.50 higher per gallon than they were this time last year, they fell sharply overnight in what was the largest one-day drop in nearly 15 years. 

    The current price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States is averaging $4.721 on Friday, down from $4.752 per gallon on Thursday—a 3.1-cent drop. The weekly change is even more significant at 12.1 cents.

    A drop of 3.1 cents on $4.752 is not even statistically significant or meaningful. A change of 0.65% -- not even a one-percent drop. A one-percent drop would have been ... almost a nickel.
