South Texas -- Observations From A Reader -- July 7, 2021

Updates

July 8, 2021: posted about 12 hours after the original post below.

Original Post

A note from a reader that I received about an hour ago.

I just drove to the Texas coast with my family (the reader lives in Dallas; this would be a trip down I-35 from Dallas, through Austin, through San Antonio, through Corpus Christi to the coast -- Mustang Island, Padre Island, Port Aransas).

We do this every year.

Beginning in January every year, I search hard for a VRBO / air bnb / resort deals.

This year I paid 75% more than I did in 2019 ( can’t compare 2020 -- everything was shut down) for a similar rental.

Granted it’s nice but I splurge for the coast.

Traffic on I-35 was terrible. Semi trucks everywhere and trucks and minivans in tow the whole way. There was no roadwork. Just a large number of people driving.

We got to port Aransas.

The Quik -E-Mart has closed at 6 p.m. We arrived after it closed.

Last year that same Quik-E-Mart was open until midnight every day.

All pumps at the mart had bags on them and they had no gas. The sign at the door says “We closed at 6 p.m. I’m tired."

No gas. Can’t believe it. Here along the coast where all the refineries in the US are located.

So many story lines, I can't even begin. Note: I received the note today suggesting the reader made the trip today, after the July 4th weekend.

One can only imagine how busy it is out in Midland / Odessa --

Covid-19 Herd Immunity Reported In Dallas County (Texas) -- July 7, 2021

See this note.

On the local news tonight, it was reported that Dallas County (Texas) has reached "herd immunity" -- defined by adding those who were diagnosed with natural disease and the number of folks vaccinated.

That fact alone should raise a number of questions, a number of story lines.

Now add this data point: in Dallas County (Texas) 80 - 90% of the very elderly have been fully vaccinated. At the other end of the spectrum, something like 20% of the 24 - 34 age group have been fully vaccinated.

That, too, should raise a number of questions regarding herd immunity.

I've always considered "herd immunity" across the entire herd, not just part of the herd. It looks like the elderly part of the herd has been vaccinated; the younger part of the herd has not been vaccinated. To me, that does not constitute "herd immunity."

Although the state reported "herd immunity" in Dallas County (Texas) today, July 7, 2021, in fact, that milestone was reached on July 4, 2021.

Covid-19 Vaccination Update; Vaccinations In USA The Have Practically Come To A Standstill -- July 7, 2021

This is the reason the White House is considering draconian measures to get folks vaccinated: vaccinations nationwide have practically come to a halt.

CDC data here

These are the most recent statistics.

Over the July 4th weekend, the CDC did not report on a daily basis.

The CDC reported it had distributed 383,068,740 doses as of July 4, 2021, Sunday's report.

Today, the CDC reported it has distributed 383,068,740 doses of July 7, 2021, today's (Wednesday's) report.

In other words, the CDC distributed no additional vaccine between after July 4, 2021, through today. None. Nada. Zip. The CDC distributes vaccine based on how much state health departments order. In other words, the state health departments have not ordered any vaccine doses since July 4, 2021. The day prior, only 1,180 doses.

Because the CDC did not post data every day for the past few days, one had to average the number of doses given the last few days.

On average, only 350,000 vaccinations have been given each of the three past days.

It's very likely the majority of those vaccinations were the second of two doses, suggesting that very few "new" folks are getting their vaccinations.
