Broadcom: Up $50 In Past Five Days -- January 12, 2024

Locator: 46520INV.

Market closed Monday, January 15, 2024 -- MLK. Which is good. Traders / investors need a break. It's been a hectic / volatile start to the new year.

One year ago, we all had the same information:

Streaming

NFL: Chiefs vs Dolphins this Saturday -- sold the rights to Peacock for $110 million. Subscription to Peacock? $6 / month. Incredibly cheap. That's two visits to Starbucks. LOL.

But I looked at what Peacock offers. Nothing interests me. Not gonna pay a dime to get one add-on simply to watch one sports event. I'm more than happy with Hulu, Amazon Prime Video. That's it.  Wow, wow, wow -- I see Peacock has a one-year introductory special: $30 for one year. $2.50 / month -- less than a visit to Starbucks. Still won't do it.
Buying movies: the interesting thing is that for $2.50 or $5.00 I can buy / rent a movie on Amazon Prime Video or watch for free the best movie (Oscar) in 1960.

Locator: 46522B.

Incredibly busy today, but I'm going to delay blogging about the Bakken for most of the day, while I get caught up on some reading.

I'll eventually be back.

Good luck to everyone.

Measure For Measure

The play, wiki

My notes here

Why was the play set in Vienna?

It would be hard to make this play into a family (G-rated) movie for Americans. It would be banned, without a doubt, in Florida.

The Elizabethans loved it; the Victorians, not so much: From wiki:

In late Victorian times, the subject matter of the play was deemed controversial, and there was an outcry when Adelaide Neilson appeared as Isabella in the 1870s.

The Oxford University Dramatic Society found it necessary to edit it when staging it in February 1906, with Gervais Rentoul as Angelo and Maud Hoffman as Isabella, and the same text was used when Oscar Asche and Lily Brayton staged it at the Adelphi Theatre in the following month.

Adelaide Neilson: wiki

I assume Ms Neilson was the Meryl Streep or the Julia Roberts of her day.

Born in Yorkshire. There's a special place in my heart for Yorkshire. If I had all the money in the world, I would have a home in Pateley Bridge. Specifically, at the northwest corner at the intersection of the B6265 and Lupton Bank.

Ironically, having spent much time in Pateley Bridge, and more specifically "on" Lupton Bank," I've never asked where the name "Lupton" comes from.

Wow, wow, wow, here goes. Again, from wiki:

The Lupton family in Yorkshire achieved prominence in ecclesiastical and academic circles in England in the Tudor era through the fame of Roger Lupton, provost of Eton College and chaplain to Henry VII and Henry VIII.
By the Georgian era, the family was established as merchants and ministers in Leeds.
Described in the city's archives as "landed gentry, a political and business dynasty", they had become successful woollen cloth merchants and manufacturers who flourished during the Industrial Revolution and traded throughout northern Europe, the Americas and Australia.
The Luptons in Yorkshire: Lupton is a placename surname connected with Lupton in Cumbria (formerly Westmoreland).
The surname in Yorkshire is recorded in 1297 in Subsidy Rolls (Robert Lupton), in the 1379 poll tax in Thornton in Lonsdale (Thomas de Lupton), in Pateley Bridge (Leonard Luptonn) in 1551 and (George Lupton) in 1553 and in 1599 in Keighley (Judithe Luptonne). Father Robert Lupton was the Vicar of Skipton in 1430.

And it's time to move on.

Trans Mountain Pipeline -- Update -- January 12, 2024

Locator: 46521TMP.

January 13, 2014: regulator reverses decision. Grants request.

Original Post

The pipeline is tracked here but it needs to be updated.

Charles Kennedy reports today; I didn't really see anything new in the article but when Charles Kennedy posts something, I listen. Probably the best contributor over at oilprice.

Data points (some of which don't make sense):

  • last week, the company said it plans to start line fill in March or May, depending on the diameter of pipe it uses and assuming there would be no other setbacks.
  • cost estimate, in round numbers, 10x initial estimate: from $2 billion to $26 billion
  • project 97.8% complete but regulator / owner still arguing over change in route / diameter of pipeline;
  • 36-inch diameter pipeline with a few hundred feet of 30-inch diameter pipe;

Reason for the recent problem: drilling is more challenging than forecast. Not sure if this is comparable to a "Boeing" problem” or a "California bullet train" problem. Perhaps this fits into a third category, all its own.

Six Wells Coming Off Confidential This Weekend -- January 12, 2024

Locator: 46521B.

"Condemning" the US, the UK on responding to Houthi attacks: the Patriot candidate. What a doofus.

"Hanoi Jane": giving comfort and aid to the enemy comes to mind. "The Houthi Don" -- a bridge too far? Perhaps not.

Red Sea: this is being described as the beginning of World War III, and yet, WTI can't hold at $73, and falls again, today. Speaks volumes with regard to global oil supply, global demand. Even OXY is up a measly 52 cents / share. NVDA? Flat. Taking world events in stride.

RBN Energy: distinguishing gas gathering pipelines from transmission and why it matters.

U.S. natural gas production continues to increase, with more growth expected at least through the middle of this decade to feed new LNG export capacity coming online along the Gulf Coast. Production growth will require new infrastructure, but long-distance transmission lines have become increasingly difficult to build due to entrenched environmental opposition. Meanwhile, gathering pipes have grown in size and length, blurring the lines between gathering and transmission. In today’s RBN blog, we’ll discuss what separates gathering systems from transmission pipelines, why those differences matter, and how those systems are continuing to evolve.
