July 8, 2024: huge thanks to a reader -- The Prairie Horizon well is a carbon capture well for the hydrogen plant Marathon is Proposing to build at the Dickinson refinery. The Dickinson Press, August 28, 2023. 

TC Energy and Marathon Petroleum recently opened their doors for an open house, giving locals a sneak peek into the proposed Prairie Horizon Hydrogen project. The event, staged ahead of a public special commission meeting Aug. 23, aimed to inform residents of the profered hydrogen facility near the existing Marathon Petroleum site in southwest Dickinson.

• July 5, 2024: Apple's M5.
• May 7, 2024: Wiki has not updated its "transistor count" page and as of this date does not include the M4 chip. Later: Wiki now includes the M4 but it's higher up the list and easily missed.
• May 7, 2024: Apple introduces NPUs with the new iPads. NPUs have been around for awhile; Apple has the lead, and is now talking about NPUs. I think this was the first day I've heard NPUs mentioned as "NPUs" and it was Tim Cook.

The links above are, of course, dynamic, but looking at these links today, there's a suggestion that there may be something new happening -- it's almost as if the number of transistors on a chip is less important than how developers "link" those CPUs, GPUs, NPUs together on the same chip -- PoPs and SoCs.

The Market -- AAPL, MSFT Trending Toward $3.5 Trillion; NVDA Drops Back -- July 5, 2024

AAPL: I watched almost all of CNBC today -- can't say I watched every minute, but I certainly watched most of it, and had it on in the background while doing other tasks, and I didn't hear one person mention Apple, but "they" certainly mentioned almost everything else. 

So, how did AAPL do today? One of its best days ever, and perhaps it's best day considering how high it was already running. It gets tedious. And look at the market cap: almost $3.5 trillion. Nvidia's market cap? $3.1 trillion. MSFT? $3.48 trillion. AAPL was $3.47 trillion. It goes without saying that this was another 52-week high for AAPL.

Later, 11:31 p.m. CDT: CNBC's "Half Time Report" -- 

A huge tease by one of my favorite panelists -- history -- back in 2023, sold CVX to buy PDX, then PDX gets bought by XOM and now she [Jenny, disclosures] has XOM which doesn't have much growth potential and only a 3% yield when her portfolio targets 5% yield, and she will use the XOM proceeds to buy a pure-play Permian operator.

Because she's in the middle of that trade, she can't mention the name, but she's really, really eager to tell her viewers. Hopefully, I don't miss that -- I assume she will tell us next week. Pure-play Permian with enough gravitas to match PDX/XOM? Thoughts:

• Permian Resources: doesn't meet her dividend goal
• FANG - Endeavor: big, same multiple as XOM; pays almost 5%
• hard to believe her pick is anything other than FANG

Later, 10:10 a.m. CDT: after opening "red," the Dow is now green (albeit, not by much) and now all major indices are "green," with the NASDAQ up almost 100 points now going up another 108 points now up 135 points. Dow flat, but technically green.

NASDAQ: hits a new all-time high.

Saudi oil: I don't know if anyone really knows what's going on. From Bloomberg today:

Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest crude oil exporter, saw overseas shipments slump to a 10-month low in June amid stiff competition in key markets while its own needs soared.

Exports of crude from the kingdom, estimated by Bloomberg using vessel tracking data and compared against figures compiled by other data providers, stood at about 168 million barrels last month — equivalent to about 5.6 million barrels a day.

That was a mere 250,000 barrels a day above the lowest level seen since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Focusing on two of the nation’s biggest customers — China and India — the situation looks even worse.

At about 1.27 million barrels a day, the amount of Saudi crude sent to China last month was the smallest since mid-2020, during the depths of the pandemic-induced rout in oil demand.
