Earnings - 3Q14

All 3Q14 earnings will be reported at this page; the link will be on the sidebar at the right, under "Earnings Central." When we start to see earnings reports for any quarter, the "Earnings Central" link is moved to the top of the sidebar until the earning season is over.

I don't have time to check/update earnings on all companies listed below. If you see one that I have missed, feel free to send it in (anonymous comment or by e-mail) and I will post it.

Much of this information is done in haste. I assume there are factual and typographical errors. It is for my personal use only. If this information is important to you, go to the source.

Miscellaneous articles:
General update (dates subject to change)
  • AAPL -- Oct 20 -- wow, it's so much fun going back and reading all the negative comments about Apple. Freudenschade, I believe, is the word. Not the best word, but close enough. At $1.42 far exceeded estimates, and "guides strongly."
  • Alcoa:  -- Oct 8 -- expectations, 23 cents; actual, 31 cents. When I saw this, I mentioned to Don that this was very, very impressive. I'm glad to see others agree. Yahoo!Finance in the headline called it a "solid beat." The reason for Alcoa's numbers:
  • Alcoa, which is shifting its focus to manufacturing components and alloys, said it would deliver a record amount of aluminum sheet to automakers this quarter as car and truck manufacturers use more of the lightweight metal. Earnings in the company’s rolled-products segment, a supplier of aluminum sheets to car, airplane and packaging manufacturers, will more than double from a year earlier, the New York-based company said today in a slide presentation.
    Alcoa is benefiting from higher commercial-jet orders and a shift to aluminum components instead of steel among automakers such as Ford Motor Co., which plans to make its F-150 pickup truck with aluminum body panels.
    “Auto body sheet has a much higher margin than anything except aircraft,” Lloyd O’Carroll, a Richmond, Virginia-based Analyst at Northcoast Research Holdings LLC who recommends buying Alcoa shares, said in an interview. “I think 2015 is going to get a pretty big lift of usage on the F-150 and of course all of the margin benefit of that.”
  • Wells Fargo:
  • B of A: a 9-cent loss; revised from an early 32-cent gain;
  • NFLX: at 96 cents earnings exceeded expectations of 93 cents; new customer numbers fell short; stock feel 25% (from $448 to $339 after-hours/after earnings came out)

Apple Fans Already Lining Up Outside Apple Stores For iPhone 6/6+ -- September 18, 2014

Updates

Later, 12:26 p.m. CDT: there are now about 30 lawn chairs, some occupied, lined up outside the Southlake, TX, Apple retail store. The first chair is occupied by a young-20-something Asian. The last two chairs are occupied, it appears, by a 50-ish-year-old white married couple. It's a very, very hot morning, and it's going to get hotter.
Original Post

The new Apple iPhone 6 and the new Apple iPhone 6+ will be available at Apple retail stores on Friday, September 19, 2014.

Riding my bicycle into Southlake, Texas, this morning, I passed the local Apple retail store. It was 9:20 a.m., Thursday, September 18, 2014. There were eight of those inexpensive Wal-Mart "lawn chairs" already lined up along the store's window, to the right of the door as you face the store. Two of the chairs were occupied, #3 and #5. The others were empty. One person standing, but probably not in line; all of them young, I think all three appeared to be Hispanic; could be wrong. One elderly woman was talking to one of the young men sitting in line.

I don't know if the stores open at midnight tonight, or as regularly scheduled, 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. Detroit.cbslocal says this:
[In the Detroit area], the Apple Store, AT&T, Best Buy and Verizon are all planning to open at 8 a.m. Friday, and Apple is encouraging customers “to arrive early or order online” to pickup their iPhone in-store or receive an estimated delivery date.
Let's see if Macrumors.com has anything to say. Nope, not yet. Expect to see a photo or two, later today, of folks lined up outside Apple retail stores later.

What's the market doing?

Up almost 100 points. Interesting. Who would have thought? First time unemployment claims plummet and housing starts plummet. EEP is up another 4% (almost); and I think that's on top of a similar gain yesterday, but I forget.

HES (1.47): earnings disappoint; revs beat; transcript;
Hess reported adjusted third quarter 2013 earnings of $1.18 per share, lagging the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.45. The underperformance was mostly due to lower production resulting from various asset sales.

Total revenue in the quarter decreased 22.8% year over year to $2,698 million from $3,494 million. Revenues, however, topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2,694.0 million.

The company is gradually transforming into a pure play exploration and production (E&P) entity from an integrated oil and gas company. As part of this strategy, Hess has sold assets worth billions of dollars, as it looks to exit the downstream business. Since the first quarter, the company has classified its Marketing and Refining business as discontinued operations.

AXAS: Abraxas Petroleum chalked up revenue of $19.1 million. The seven analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ foresaw a top line of $18.2 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 22% higher than the prior-year quarter's $15.6 million. EPS came in at -$0.03. The nine earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $0.00 per share. Non-GAAP EPS were -$0.03 for Q4 against -$0.12 per share for the prior-year quarter. GAAP EPS were -$0.13 for Q4 versus -$0.06 per share for the prior-year quarter.; earnings call; boe flat over past three years, but decrease in NG offset by increase in liquids (good news); looking for 5,000 boepd exit rate by end of 1Q13; Last year, we participated in 27 outside-operated Bakken Three Forks wells. And so far this year, we've participated in 11 more. Generally, no one represents a large capital commitment, but together they do. That's a planning and budgeting issue. We like to be in better control of our capital expenditure plus overall operations, so we've made the decision to sell most of our non-op Bakken interests. The frac on the Joy went off without a hitch and the well's been on production ever since except for some weather and minor workover shut-ins. The Raven 2H and 3H, we weren't so lucky. Both encountered downhaul mechanical issues that required remedial work that resulted in a significant settlement with our third-party service provider, I might add. The fracs were completed in February, and both wells have been on production since. We're not as happy with the frac on the 2H as we were with the 3H. But the 2H is producing on our type curve while the 3H is producing well above our type curve.

3Q12 Earnings

Earnings: 3Q12

All 3Q12 earnings will be reported at this page; link will be on sidebar at the right, under "Earnings Central." When we start to see earnings reports for this quarter, I will move "Earnings Central" to the top of the sidebar until the earning seasons is over.

I don't have time to check/update earnings on all companies listed below. If you see one that I have missed, feel free to send it in (anonymous comment or by e-mail) and I will post it.

Comment: I am looking forward to an incredible 3Q12 for the energy industry. Think of Saudi Arabia as just one big oil company. If Saudi Arabia is making record amounts of money, so are the majors. [Update: majors are warning that earnings will be lower than expected due to lower energy prices this past quarter.]

CVX: profits drop by a third; strong dividend growth should continue. Link to a SeekingAlpha.com article.
CVX had about $253.7 billion in revenue in 2011, up 24% from 2010. However this growth is not projected to continue into 2012 and 2013 when analysts target about $252 billion and $262 billion respectively. CVX has a market capitalization of $230.6 billion and an enterprise value of $219.3 billion, shows almost no debt. CVX has about $10.2 billion in debt, but over $21 billion in cash and equivalents. CVX has a strong track record of paying dividends. For 2011, its payout ratio to net income was 23% and its payout to operating cash flow was 15%. While CVX primarily returns capital to shareholders through dividends, CVX did repurchase over $3 billion of shares in 2011, up substantially from the two previous years.

The natural gas-focused company, based in Calgary, Alberta, recorded a $1.19 billion non-cash impairment charge in the latest quarter, again marking down the value of its natural-gas assets as prices dipped. It took a similar charge in the second quarter.
Encana said third-quarter operating earnings, which exclude the impairment charge and other items, fell to $263 million, or 36 cents a share, from $389 million, or 53 cents a share. Results beat the Thomson Reuters mean estimate for a profit of 26 cents a share.
Encana said natural-gas prices hit their lowest levels in a decade during the first half of the year, leading it to shut in or curtail about 500 million cubic feet a day of production.

For the third quarter of 2012, the Company reported net income of $18.3 million, or $0.20 per diluted share, as compared to net income of $66.3 million, or $0.72 per diluted share, for the third quarter of 2011. The Company's third quarter 2012 results were impacted by several non-cash items, including a $27.7 million unrealized loss on derivative instruments and a $36 thousand impairment of oil and gas properties. Excluding these items and their tax effect, the third quarter 2012 Adjusted Net Income (non-GAAP) was $35.4 million, or $0.38 per diluted share. Excluding similar non-cash items and their tax effect, Adjusted Net Income (non-GAAP) for the third quarter of 2011 was $21.6 million, or $0.23 per diluted share.
OKE:  missed by a penny;

OKS: 3Q12 higher, and confirms guidance;

OXY: income falls, but beats expectations; link to MarketWatch;
3Q12 net income fell 22% on about flat revenue. Earnings declined to $1.38 billion, or $1.69 a share, from $1.77 billion, or $2.17, in the year-earlier quarter. Continuing operations produced earnings of $1.70 a share versus $2.18. Sales were off 0.7% to $5.97 billion from $6.01 billion. A survey of analysts by FactSet Research produced consensus estimates of $1.63 a share of profit on $5.63 billion of revenue. Third-quarter production of 766,000 barreld of oil equivalent a day rose 4% from the year-earlier quarter. Higher volume plus better results in marketing and trading were partly offset by lower prices.
In the Williston basin in North Dakota, we currently have over 310,000 net acres of significant resource potential, which we estimate to be about 250 million net barrels. Our production in the basin has tripled since we entered the area over 1.5 years ago. We have recently slowed our drilling activity and significantly reduced our rig count in the basin as a result of cost pressures. While well costs have subsequently declined modestly, we will only increase our rig count when costs come down enough to make returns competitive with the rest of our portfolio. We believe that over the long term, our resource base in the Williston basin represents a significant opportunity for the company.
