Trump Halts Orsted Wind Project Off Rhode Island -- Saturday, August 23, 2025

Locator: 48935WIND.

Payback is hell! Payback is delicious! Doug Burgum remembers very, very well how the Keystone XL pipeline was canceled even after all permits were obtained and construction had already begun. The Orsted "stop" is even more delicious: the project was almost complete. Sure, Judge Boasberg will step in but it will be tied up in court for a long time.

Is Off-Shore Wind Dead? July 24, 2023

Locator: 45189WIND.

Updates

July 25, 2023: hope springs eternal.

Original Post

All of a sudden this has become a big story. Big article in Barron's this month about the demise of off-shore US wind projects due to inflation.

Updates

Later, 6:04 p.m. CT: it's slightly worse. Pricing is now up to $185; oil is at 8%; and, coal remains at 3%. Renewables, overall, 4% of resource mix, and wind 3% of the renewable mix; 0.03 and 0.04 = 0.12% of total resooource mix provided by wind.

And not even using that much electricity in the big scheme of things.

That Martha Vineyard Off-Shore Wind Farm? It's Dead, Fred; Any More Proof Needed That Global Warming Is A Scam? -- August 27, 2019

Updates

Later, 7:51 p.m. Central Time: a reader sent me this note earlier this afternoon but this was as soon as I was able to get back on line -- the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protetion (MassDEPA) over-ruled Edgartown. MassDEPA says "lay the cable." Edgartown will appeal the decision. And then look at this sh*t:
Edgartown conservation agent Jane Varkonda told The Times Edgartown didn’t receive the August 5 superseding order of conditions from the commonwealth in a timely manner. Varkonda said she learned by happenstance the decision had been made during a conversation with a state official. Upon learning Edgartown was without the decision, the official sent it.
“He sent it to me on Friday [August 16], and the last day to appeal was Monday the 19th,” she said.

Varkonda said town counsel was able to pull together the appeal in time. “It was a scramble to say the least,” she said.
Reynolds, Rappaport, Kaplan and Hackney director Michael Goldsmith, who drafted the appeal, declined to speculate on why the order didn’t initially get to Edgartown.
Varkonda said it’s plausible it was lost in the mail. Comment: my hunch. The MassDEPA letter was accidentally addressed to Jeff Epstein.
Later, 2:48 p.m. Central Time: from a reader who knows and follows this much more closely than I do -- minimally edited --
There are several more "happenings" related to that offshore wind project near Martha's Vineyard. Basically, it's dead, Fred.

Opposition was growing this spring from commercial fishing groups.

Then, the Gloucester office of the NOAA (?) fisheries division released a report saying the important draft EIS (draft Environmental Impact Statement) was inadequate.

Although the BOEM is the lead permitting agency, the Coast Guard, NOAA, and the EPA all refused to sign off on a required evaluation saying they were satisfied with the project's overall impacts.

In early July, BOEM kinda rocked the entire offshore wind industry when it announced that a comprehensive analysis would be undertaken to assess how ALL these several offshore wind farms might effect the East Coast maritime universe.

Vineyard Wind is only a few weeks away from probably announcing that it is aborting/suspending its project as they will lose their needed tax credits if construction does not start prior to this coming December 31, 2019 deadline.

If you google "New York City gas shortage", you may see some amusing/puzzling reports of how local politicians are excoriating the local utility - National Grid - for not providing the much needed natgas to New Yorkers.
Had the reader not add this last line, I would have:
You just can't make this stuff up.

Martha's Vineyard to be underwater in less than ten years due to rising seas / global warming.

President Obama to buy oceanfront property for $15 million on Martha's Vineyard. I assume his daughters are aghast.

That wind farm off Martha's Vineyard?

February 28, 2019:
May 9, 2019:
  • Massachusetts permitting update here. Permit granted.
July 14, 2019:
  • Just kidding, never mind. Key cable permit denied. Why is this not surprising. Edgartown, on Martha's Vineyard (island) says "no" to  the necessary undersea cable. Why does this not surprise me.

January 26, 2019, T+26, Part 5, Day 1 Of Negotiations -- UK Grid Running On Fumes?

Super Bowl. Is it time for a daily quote from The Big Lebowski between now and February 3, 2019? Yeah, why not? First:
“You brought the *****' Pomeranian bowling?”- The Dude
Actually, 2018 was a pretty good year. American Greatness. Victor Davis Hanson.

UK running on fumes? The grid holding during the current cold spell. Link here.
As many have been pointing out as the day has gone along, things have been getting pretty tight on the power grid. Above is the current situation at 5.30 pm.
Wind power has supplied little all day, and is currently running at under 2% of capacity. Solar power of course is effectively irrelevant at this time of year. [This is the UK: it has lots and lots of wind capacity -- but look at that -- running under 2% of capacity.]
Meanwhile, CCGT has been running flat out, and so too is nuclear given that Hunterston is currently shut down.
The government intends to close all coal power plants by 2025, which can realistically only be replaced by 13GW of CCGT, about half of our total capacity now, and equivalent to fifteen Carrington power stations.
Construction of Carrington took three years, but planning added a further five years.
Given that there is very little in the pipeline at the moment for new CCGT and the uncertainty surrounding future capacity auctions thanks to the ECJ, there seems to be little prospect that anything like 13GW will be available by 2025, or for that matter many years after. [Europe at a tipping point.]

Ronnie Milsap's Duets
Released January 18, 2019

From Rolling Stone:
With his 76th birthday and the release of a brand-new album of duets just one month away, tireless entertainer Ronnie Milsap plans to spend plenty of time in the new year where he’s right at home — on the concert stage. The Country Music Hall of Fame legend, whose pop-country hits including “Any Day Now,” “Stranger in My House” and “(There’s) No Gettin’ Over Me,” kicks off the upcoming trek, the 76 for 76 Tour, with a January 16th birthday show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, which is likely to feature several surprise guests. Dates are currently on the books through May.

Mere hours after Milsap’s birthday celebration ends, another begins with the release of The Duets, a collection of many of the singer’s best-known tunes featuring a country music who’s who, including fellow Hall of Famers George Strait, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson as well as Kacey Musgraves, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Little Big Town, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and newcomer Jesse Key. Of special note are collaborations with the late Leon Russell and the final recorded performance by the late Troy Gentry of duo Montgomery Gentry.

“When you have a singer’s singer like Kacey Musgraves inside ‘There’s No Getting Over Me,’ or Luke Bryan bringing his whole heart to ‘Stranger in My House,’ let alone a good friend like Willie doing a brand new Mike Reid song or Dolly asking if she can write a verse to ‘Smoky Mountain Rain’ to make it ours, well, that’s all you can ever ask of the songs,” says the six-time Grammy recipient. “Mine have not only done me well, they’ve made a lot of people I love happy, too.”
It's an incredible album. I think the album moves Milsap a little closer to the center of the pantheon, perhaps next to Willie himself.

Lucy Angel at wiki.
Lucy Angel journeyed to China twice in 2009. The first time was in January when they gained the distinction of being the first American/Western group ever to be invited to perform at the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square, doing so before an audience of dignitaries and government officials.[
In May 2009, the group was invited back to China for the Zhangjiajie International Country Music Week in the Hunan Province.
Happy, Happy Birthday, Lucy Allen and Ronnie Milsap

Did Chesto Get Ahead Of His Headlights? -- December 16, 2018

A reader updates this story:
A few weeks back, a Rhode Island fishermen's advisory council unanimously voted down Vineyard Wind's project due to the turbines' placement. Shortly thereafter, the Rhode Island Maritime regulatory body postponed a scheduled permitting vote - necessary for the project to proceed - in order for the fishermen and Vineyard Wind to come up with an agreeable compromise (HIGHLY doubtful).

The vote is now scheduled for the end of January.

A Vineyard Wind spokesman has already stated that, absent a positive, timely approval, both Vineyard Wind and all northeast offshore projects might be scuttled.

Fishermen and wholesale fish marketers up and down the East coast are mobilizing to block these wind farms.
The original "Chesto" story was posted yesterday, December 15, 2018;
Winds of change: The blockbuster auction for offshore wind leases that wrapped up today should leave few doubts: The industry has finally arrived in New England.

Three developers backed by major European energy companies won access to 390,000 acres of federal waters nearly 20 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, after numerous rounds of spirited bidding that stretched over two days. These firms will each pay a record $135 million for the rights to build massive windmills in their respective slices of the ocean.

Walter Cruickshank, head of the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, told reporters: “We are completely blown away by this.” He was speaking for the agency that oversaw the auction, of course.

But he also summed up the industry’s reaction. Although these areas will take many years to fully develop, BOEM says the three lease sites combined could eventually support 4,100 megawatts of wind generation, enough juice for 1.5 million homes.
