Original Posting

[For a look at the Madison wells in Stockyard Creek, click here.]

After a reader alerted me to some exciting news in Stockyard Creek a few days ago, I've been trying to find some time to highlight this field. Finally, some time.

Stockyard Creek oil field is a one-township field, T154N-R99W.  In addition to one township, the field has an additional six sections on the northwest corner. In all, 41 sections (section 36 in the township is not part of this field). [Update: on March 20 when I updated this posting, I noted that the Stockyard Creek is now missing the six sections in the adjoining township to the northwest; they are now part of the Epping Field. In addition, the Stockyard Creek does not include sections 25, 31, or 26 in the township; thus the field is only 33 sections now.]

The field is located five (5) miles east of Williston. ND Highway 1804 splits the field right in half: a north half and a south half. Activity is about the same on both sides of the road.

This field has become quite active in the past few weeks, and I've received comments from others that this is an exciting field. For the most part, this field is owned by Zavanna, but there's a lot of area remaining to be explored.

The Marty is sited on the same pad as #18016, Zavanna, Hanson 1-28H (update: the Hanson 1-28H permit was canceled, May 17, 2010).

(There are some old vertical wells on the north side of the road.)

I know that one of the horizontal wells targeted the Madison. I do not know what formations the other three wells targeted. Of these four wells, I have IPs for three of them: #16725, Petro-Hunt, 119; #16866, Zavanna,78 (Madison); and, #17446, Zavanna, 49.

Despite these low IPs, there is still a lot of interest in this field and it will be interesting to see the results of the wells being drilled and the other wells on the confidential list.

But this is what got me excited about the Stockyard Creek, and again, I have to thank a reader for sending me this information: at the link noted above, the writer noted that Gene 1-22H, #18009,  a Zavanna well in this field, section 22, has been completed  and is flowing at 2,936 boepd. A second well on the confidential list, #18015, is also a Zavanna well, Grasser 1-26H, sited on the same pad as the Gene well but will be drilling NW to SE.  These two wells are on a pad exactly one mile south of the highway about midway through the field.

The scenery in this field is quite nice. One drives through it on the way to the recreational area on Lake Sakakawea closest to Williston. If one enjoys watching progress on a well pad, #18054 and #18824, are just feet from Highway 1804, on the eastern side of the field.

From file #12576, a report dated September, 1997:
Stock Yard Creek, originally discovered by Texaco in the late 1980's, has cumulative production in excess of 615,000 bbls of oil with 61,5000 bbls of water from four (4) wells. The State of North Dakota "L" #1 produced 15 - 18 BOPD with very little water prior to the current attempt at horizontal  penetration of the main pay zone.

Wells Reporting Today -- Very Good Wells

Don't worry; I'm not starting a  new page. This information is being posted on "New Wells Reporting," but today's "Daily Activity Report" was such a good report, I thought I would just "cut and paste" the reporting wells here, also:
17991, 1,154, Whiting, Satterthwaite 44-1H
18233, 1,329, Whiting, Ogden 11-3TFH
18246, 1,995, Whiting, Littlefield 12-31H
18267, 1,033, Newfield, Clear Creek State 1-36H
18307, 3,236, BEXP, State 36-1 1-H
Those are some very good wells, the controversy about IPs notwithstanding.
