KOG Closes On Previously Announced Plans To Acquire More Bakken Acreage
Link here.
Net acreage now near 100,000 acres in the North Dakota Bakken.
Operations update:
Net acreage now near 100,000 acres in the North Dakota Bakken.
Operations update:
Kodiak has begun completion operations on its two-well pad in the Koala project area in McKenzie County, N.D. The Company anticipates completing both wells during early July 2011 and plans to simultaneously flow back the wells and turn them to production facilities and gas pipeline infrastructure which services the area. Kodiak operates the two-well pad with a 52.5% working interest and a 42.5% net revenue interest.
Following this two well pad, completions operations will move to Dunn County, N.D. where a four-well pad is being prepared for fracture stimulation operations in late July and early August. Oil, gas and water disposal pipelines have been constructed to these wells. In addition, four gross (2 net) wells have been drilled on Kodiak's non-operated lands in Dunn County and completion operations are underway of the first of those wells. Operated and non-operated completion procedures are expected to be continuous through the third quarter.
Kodiak is currently drilling ahead on four wells with two rigs running in McKenzie County, N.D. and two rigs running in Dunn County, N.D. Each of these rigs is drilling on multi-well pads.
Carpe Diem Highlights North Dakota's Booming Energy Economy
Link here.
If there's any doubt that domestic drilling of oil and gas generate huge and significant positive economic benefits (more jobs, income, output, tax revenues, etc.), the booming economy in North Dakota provides a convincing case study.Among numerous statistics cited, these caught my interest:
Oil-related employment in North Dakota has more than doubled in just two years, from 6,800 jobs in May 2009 to 15,200 jobs in May of 2011. North Dakota has continued to add jobs, and not just oil-related jobs.
In the first quarter of 2011, North Dakota led the country with a 6.9% increase in personal income. Second place Wyoming at 2.6% wasn't even close, and North Dakota's increase was almost four times the national average of 1.8%.
Heart of the Bakken -- Commission Still Approving Man-Camps, But Showing Some Resistance
Link here. (Regional link will break soon.)
The Williams County Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend approval of several new temporary housing facilities during its meeting Tuesday morning. Some requests denied outright; others trimmed back.
But commissioners also began showing signs of growing resistance, during a meeting that lasted just minutes shy of six hours, to allowing camps as readily as it has in the past.
Minnesota Unable To Balance Budget -- Will Close the State's Two Horse Racetracks
Update
July 2, 2011: Second day of government shutdown. This is why some folks have lost "faith" in government. It appears along with horse racing, the big things affected by the shut down include a) the lottery; and, b) visiting prison inmates.
Mussette Wade, 37, hoped to buy Minnesota Lottery tickets at a Minneapolis gas station. But the state shutdown prevented her from doing that. "I usually buy scratch-offs once a week when I get paid," she said. "It's just something I leisurely do."If these are the things that cause the most consternation with a state government shutdown, I can see why no one in state legislature got too excited about the deadline.
Wade was more upset by a bigger shutdown inconvenience: She was not able to visit a friend who is incarcerated in a Minnesota prison. Staff cutbacks at correctional facilities have ended visitation rights for inmates.
Original Post
I can sorta see why the state government couldn't come to terms on balancing the budget. It appears the issue that garnered the most concern, based on number of words devoted to the issue in the article, was the closure of the state's two horse racing tracks.
The state's two horse racing tracks, which require a handful of state race officials on hand, would close. We're talking a "handful of state race officials" here.
The closure of Canterbury Park racetrack at the height of the season has thrown horse racing into disarray, with jockeys, trainers and owners scrambling to make adjustments.
Jockey agent Jesse Lomeli, who has come to Canterbury since it opened in 1985, drives thousands of miles from his home in Guadalajara, Mexico, to represent riders at the track.
"The thing that makes me sad is the government is getting in the middle of our business,'' said Lomeli, who will return to Mexico if the track closes. "They're keeping us from working and making a living. We're just trying to make a go of it, and they're putting the brakes on us.''
But based on the article, all essential services, including schools would remain open.
Oh, the zoo would be closed to the public, also. Zoo operations, like water, feed, and vet services, would still continue. It's hard to believe the vendors in the park are losing money.
Japanese Mitsui Buys (Again) Into Eagle Ford -- Partners With SM -- Deal Worth $680 Million
Link here.
According to the agreement, Mitsui will acquire 12.5 percent working interest in the Eagle Ford Shale acreage by paying 90 percent of SM Energy's drilling and completion costs on the acreage, up to $680 million. Additionally, Mitsui is paying between $20 and $30 million for a 50 percent interest in SM's midstream assets in the region.Even if current US administration doesn't see value in America's energy potential, China and Japan do.
Is the Spearfish All That Great? Who Knows, But Look at a Few Newburg Oil Field Wells
More on Newburg field later. For now, just to give one an example of some vertical Spearfish wells in the Newburg field.
Also, note that most Bakken wells will reach 100,000 bbls within three years of spudding; great Bakken wells will reach 100,000 in less than a year
Average price of oil since the 1950's has been fairly low compared to current $100 oil
These wells continue to produce after 40 years; they say the Bakken wells will produce 25 - 30 years
Yes, there are a lot of wells in this field that are now permanently abandoned; and there were some wells with significantly less cumulative oil totals, but one does get a feeling for the potential.

Lost Bridge oil field is an irregularly shaped field just west of the reservation, and in a fairly non-descript location as far as other oil fields go, about 20 miles southeast of Watford City. No major roads run through this field. It is a relatively small field, only 37 sections, most of them in T148N-R96W. [Update: 45 sections, Oct 3, 2014.]
It appears that XTO (now a subsidiary of XOM) pretty much controls most of the field. XTO has reported some nice wells in this area.
Of interest is the number of multi-well pads: a couple of two-well pads, and another pad with four (4) wells. There is a well with three laterals, also. (For newbies, IPs are in red bold, and total cumulative is in black bold. A well with >100,000 bbls cumulative is well on its way to having paid for itself.)

Total SA Acquires 60 Percent of US-Based SunPower Corp -- Total SA Now the #1 Solar Energy Provider Among Oil Companies
Link here.
Total SA already ranks among the world’s largest petroleum producers, but with its acquisition of 60% of U.S.-based SunPower Corp. for $1.3 billion, the Paris-based conglomerate now ranks as the No. 1 solar energy provider among big oil firms.
Total SA is moving into solar power despite the challenges posed by low-cost Chinese manufacturers and spotty support from government subsidies around the globe.
How big a deal is this for Total SA? It's simply a marketing deal to "improve their image." Remember all the environmentally-friendly ads by BP before THE spill?
Total SA is keeping SunPower’s senior management in place. The deal also allows SunPower to continue trading as a public company, partly to provide an incentive to management to build value in the firm.
Total SA has no current plans to acquire the remaining 40% of SunPower’s common stock.
Total SA said solar profits are choppy right now, with subsidies needed until the cost comes down to grid parity in coming years.
Will it "move the needle" for Total SA?
“SunPower probably won’t reach much more than 1% of their energy production, but it still has growth in it,” one analyst said. “They need every type of energy in their mix and every bit adds up.”
Yup. One percent at a time.
- Total SA's annual revenues: $212.77 billion.
- Total SA's net income: $17.01 billion. ($17,010,000,000)
- SunPower's annual revenues: $2.2 billion.
- SunPower's net income: $179 million. ($179,000,000)
Can one say "rounding error"?

Alaska Pipeline: Viable Only Ten More Years?
Link here.
The Trans Alaska Pipeline System, Alaska's main economic artery, may only have 10 years of service left if oil flows continue to dwindle at current rates, according to a report issued on Wednesday by the system's operator.Yup. And North Dakota will exceed 605,000 bbls long before the decade is out.
The pipeline can operate reliably with oil flows as low as 350,000 barrels per day, but throughput below that threatens its viability.
That threshold -- expected to be reached in about a decade if oil production continues to decline at current rates -- is the first ever identified as a specific minimum throughput for reliable operations.
The 800-mile pipeline shipped an average of about 605,000 barrels per day in May, less than a third of the 2 million barrel peak achieved in 1988.
Oil Queen of California -- Absolutely Nothing To Do With The Bakken -- But Maybe Some Lessons To Be Learned
I'm enjoying some time with my grandchildren in southern California.
Today we visited the Cabrillo Beach and Cabrillo Marine Museum. We last visited the marine museum some years ago. We remembered it as a small hole-in-the-wall museum. Wow, has it changed. The original marine museum is still there but they have added a touch tank.
But in addition, they've added a discovery center, a state-of-the-art marine research library, and a research area. We were completely blown away. My first impression was that it was nicer than the Boston Aquarium. Then I remembered the seals, the penguins, and Boston Aquarium's own touch tank. For children under the age of eight years, I would recommend the Cabrillo Marine Museum. It's smaller, a bit more educational for that age group, more intimate, less easy to get loss, but one really can't go wrong with either.
Oh, by the way, the Cabrillo Marine Museum is free. Yes, free. Suggested donation but my hunch is that most of the locals who visit frequently donate only occasionally.
But I digress. I assume most folks coming to a blog on the North Dakota oil industry are not interested in reading about a marine museum in southern California. There is another reason for writing about the museum.
As noted, the research library is a state-of-the art complex run by a very engaging librarian. She pointed out one of the library's new books, a history of the Los Angeles Port. Interestingly, every page in the book, it seems, refers to the port as the San Pedro Port, but that's another story.
There is a chapter in the book on the oil industry in southern California. There's an interesting story of a young woman who came from Boston to San Pedro, California, to teach piano lessons. She got caught up in the oil frenzy at the turn of the century, and actually invested in a well that happened to be located next to where she was living.
With the money she made from that first half interest in the well next to her, she bought her own rig, hired a crew, and started drilling.
To make a long story short, she ended up controlling ALL the oil from the Los Angeles oil field, one of the largest fields in the United States.
Her name was Emma Summers. Her story can be read here. She became known as the Oil Queen of California.

She continued to teach piano lessons.Summers expanded her holdings into real estate as World War I demand for petroleum increased her profits. She bought some of the first motion picture theaters in Los Angeles as well as apartment houses, several San Fernando Valley ranches, and a Wilshire Boulevard mansion.
As the Los Angeles oil boom waned, Summers moved into her elegant hotel appropriately named the Queen. Years later she recalled, “Oh, how scared I was sometimes! I would start in on a big deal and then get scared and wonder where I’d land. But I usually came out all right.”
Her name was Emma Summers. Her story can be read here. She became known as the Oil Queen of California.
Against My Better Judgement ...
Update
July 6, 2011: Yup, I was right. The New York Times story linked below was inaccurate in many areas. Williston's McDonald's manager sets the record straight. (Regional link will break soon.)
Original Post
The focus of the article is all the problems Williston is facing with growth -- as if most other cities and states wouldn't love to have that problem.
I scanned the article quickly; it seems fairly well-balanced. As challenging as things are in the Bakken, a couple of important notes: a) everyone in Williston has a job who wants one; and, b) despite the huge influx of outsiders, the crime rate seems not to be a problem.
I read the regional and local papers on-line almost every day; folks send me links I might have missed; and there have been literally no stories about problems related to crime in Williston and western North Dakota. Knock on wood.
I have seen no articles on issues with entertainment at the local bars.
The big story last summer was the number of folks living in tents in the local parks but that seems to have been handles humanely and appropriately and seems not to be an issue this year. But even then, with small tent communities in the local parks, there seemed to be no significant problems.
With all the traffic, I have not seen an increase in the number of stories related to traffic incidents or traffic deaths. Coincidentally the only North Dakota traffic death I remember reading about this week was one that occurred in Grand Forks, three hundred fifty miles to the east.
As noted, I scanned the article. If the writer did not address crime or traffic fatalities, he/she chose to overlook some of the more positive things among all the challenges.
If I remember correctly, the "dateline" was June 29, 2011, Bismarck, North Dakota. I'm not sure why the article wasn't filed from Williston. Did the writer phone it in?
