Updating A Monster Petro-Hunt Well -- Charlson Oil Field -- November 16, 2024

Locator: 10010PH_CHARLSON

Updates

November 17, 2024: a reader was nice enough to update the status of this well regarding whether it's on a pump or not:

You mention in your post about this well that you aren’t sure if it on a pump or not (see "original post" below).

YES, it is on a pump---in NDIC terms: artificial lift (AL).

The reader copied the top portion from the Scout data and on here highlighted in yellow where to see how you can see if it is FLOWING or pumping[AL].

If you hover your mouse over the AL, it will say producing by artificial lift. This info will show up on both the home well page as well as on the page with the production data. The code definitions are on the well home page[not production data page]. When clicking on CODE DEFINITIONS, you will have a screen wherein the dropdown menu will give you the family of code definitions---this one appears under POOL STATUS.

Original Post

A reader sent me the NDIC production history for this well, which I have on my "monster well" page.

This well began production in October, 2006. Now, exactly four years later (October 2010), the cumulative oil production for this well is 1,064,957 barrels. At $50/bbl, that's $50 million at the well head.

The well has shown minimal decline rate and is currently down to 13,000 bbls/month. At $75/bbl, that's $12 million/year. The well has been paid for. If it's on a pump (and I don't know that it is), it costs a few pennies a day to run the pump, and if there's a pipeline to the well now, there's minimal trucking costs.  But even if the oil is still trucked out, it's a heck of a well.

And that's why oilmen keep drilling: hoping for the big one.

The nice thing about the Bakken / Three Fork Sanish: there is seldom a dry hole, so even the less productive wells eventually pay for themselves and provide cash flow in the meantime. Can you imagine what it would be like if three out of ten wells were dry?

Doug Burgum

Locator: 48746BURGUM.

From wiki

Douglas James Burgum, born August 1, 1956, is an American businessman and politician serving since 2016 as the 33rd governor of North Dakota.

He is among the richest politicians in the United States and has an estimated net worth of at least $1.1 billion. He is a member of the Republican Party.

Burgum was born and raised in Arthur, North Dakota (population 400, near Fargo, ND)

After graduating from North Dakota State University in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in university studies and earning an MBA from Stanford University two years later, he mortgaged inherited farmland in 1983 to invest in Great Plains Software in Fargo

Becoming its president in 1984, he took the company public in 1997. Burgum sold the company to Microsoft for $1.1 billion in 2001

While working at Microsoft, he managed Microsoft Business Solutions. He has served as board chairman for Australian software company Atlassian and SuccessFactors. Burgum is the founder of Kilbourne Group, a Fargo-based real-estate development firm, and also is the co-founder of Arthur Ventures, a software venture capital group.

Burgum won the 2016 North Dakota gubernatorial election in a landslide. He was reelected by a wide margin in 2020. In June 2023, Burgum launched a campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. He ended his candidacy in early December 2023, and became an advisor on the Trump campaign's energy policy. On November 14, 2024, Donald Trump announced his intent to nominate Doug Burgum as the next United States Secretary of the Interior.

This is quite incredible. Think about this: Doug Burgum will have two roles. He will wear two hats. He will be secretary of a department in the Deep State as well as head a new "national energy council." By any other name, he will be the nation's energy czar.

He (Doug Burgum) and Kamala Harris had similar political trajectories, though at opposite ends of the political spectrum and arising / coming out of entirely different sectors. One was a businessman well versed in information technology; the other, a liberal attorney general.

The Peter Principal.

Kamala Harris vs Doug Burgum.

One can barely play checkers; the other excels at 3-D chess.

What does it mean to chair the (new) National Energy Council

In his new position, Burgum will lead a new National Energy Council, which will give the North Dakota governor a seat on the National Security Council and “oversee the path to U.S. ENERGY DOMINANCE,” Trump said in a statement.

The Book Page

Vishnu's Crowded Temple: India Since The Great Rebellion, Maria Misra, c. 2007. Yale Press.

It's impossible to read everything, but in thirty minutes, a very close reading of the introduction to that book helped me understand what my Indian friend told me some months ago when she responded to a question I had asked about "India."

I don't know if an outsider completely new to the topic of "India" would get much out of this introduction. Perhaps the introduction made sense to me since I had just completed reading an "entire" history of India:

  • India: A History, John Keay, c. 2000, 2010.

It is impossible to summarize -- take out of context -- all that was written in that introduction but this is what stood out for me, page xxxiii:

More recently the advocates of liberalization have dreamt of an India integrated by information technology and software systems into a bright new age of cyber-equality.

Again,

More recently the advocates of liberalization have dreamt of an Indian integrated by information technology and software systems into a bright new age of cyber-equality.

This book was written 2007.

Wow, if that doesn't explain a lot.

Starbucks

For the archives: why Starbucks is losing customers. Link to The New York Times.

From the linked article:

On Wednesday, Starbucks CEO, Mr. Niccol mentioned a few steps designed to win back customers. Starting with the introduction of the holiday menu in early November, Starbucks will no longer charge customers extra for nondairy milk, one of the most popular customizations. The company said it would also not increase prices for the 2025 fiscal year.

The company is also setting a goal of getting customers their orders in four minutes or less, Mr. Niccol said. Brewed coffee will now be delivered to customers at the register, and customers can customize their coffee themselves — adding milk and sweeteners — at the condiment stations that the company will be reinstalling. That should also alleviate some of the workload for baristas, Mr. Niccol said.
