Grocery Prices In North Texas Falling Fast -- Kroger -- March 5, 2024

Locator: 46687GROCERY.

I haven't seen tuna under a dollar in ... like ... forever. Trending toward $2.00 in many places.

No one in the area still sells three bollilo rolls for a buck. This has been the "standard" price for ... a .. decade? And these are huge rolls. Probably equal to a Subway 8" if Subway had 8" rolls.

Are you kidding me? Progresso soup under $2.00 / can?

No one else has chips this cheap:

CNBC tells me boxes of cereal are priced at $7.50 in NYC. How about under $2.50 in Texas?

You can check out the prices for wine, but look at that sake. Kroger could sell it for $11.99 but they price it at $6.99 -- which, by the way, is its usual price -- this is not on sale. $6.99 is their usual price -- at least it has been for the past year.

And those $4.99 eggs in NYC? $1.99 here in north Texas -- which is the going price at all stores this week, except Target, still $2.79 or something ridiculous like that.

Cheerfulness: Google: growing economic optimism among respondents -- a line I took from an article in a recent business magazine.

Gloom and doom: without question, the "Nightly News" is the worst "thing" young impressionable adults can watch. Fortunately they don't. What I see on the first 20 minutes of ABC News each night is exactly the opposite of what I see in real America, at least that part of American in which I reside.

Wow, I couldn't be happier.

Investing: The equity market is giving investors an opportunity they don't often see.

As mentioned earlier, I will be buying a lot of AAPL by the end of this week. No recommendation.

Then each of the following three weeks in March, one stock each week from my various buckets. CAT will be one of the weekly buys. Again, no recommendation. The last two weeks: NVDA, AMD, ENB, CHRD, NOG, based on price.

Brunch: an American revolution. Great interview with CEO of "First Watch" was awesome. Average check for breakfast, $16.50. Very affordable. Me? I prefer the "Brunch District." It might have two restaurants but it's going to be huge.

Lego: still collecting Lego sets. Can't talk about them because my daughter reads the blog and everything I buy is with the four-year-old grandsons in mind. However, see #4 at this site, the "Razor Crest," #75331. Available at our local re-sale store for $500. My daughter told me never to collect Star Wars. The "Razor Crest" is exhibit A. At the Lego site. This is an immense piece and can only be appreciated in person. Photographs do not do it justice. The video at the Lego site is about as good as you can do if you can't see it in person.

Reading: wow, wow, wow. What a surprise. I doubt I will read any biography any better than the coming of age bio of Jackie Bouvier Kennedy by Carl Sferrazza Anthony, c. 2023. Absolutely fascinating. Her relationship with JFK before they got married is very, very interesting. Explains a lot. This JFK clearly married above his pay grade. Princess Di, at best, would have been a lady-in-waiting.

Weather: a bit breezy today; high will be 80°P. Sunny. Almost perfect for biking, except for the slight breeze.

Apple announcing new M3 products this month.

Need to start here: twice the speed at half the cost -- that was a year ago. It just gets better and better.

This was last year:

In lane one: the highest-end Intel-based Mac Pro with a (holy mackerel look at this) 28-core Xeon W processor: cost? It starts at $12,999. Remember this is an Apple Mac Pro using an Intel-processor; two configurations:

  • single-core
  • multi-core

In lane two: the new Apple-chip Mac Pro, two configurations

  • single-core
  • multi-core

Results:

  • first race, single core:
    • in lane one: INTEL MAC PRO speed, single core: 1,378 mph
    • in lane two: APPLE MAC PRO speed, single core: 2,794 mph
  • first race, multi-core:
    • in lane two: INTEL MAC PRO speed, multi-core: 10,390 mph
    • in lane one: APPLE MAC PRO speed, multi-core: 21,453 mph

Again:

  • Intel best: 10,390 mph
  • Apple: 21,453 mph

Price:

  • Intel best: starts at $12,999
  • Apple: $6,999

In other words, buy the top-of-the line Intel-based Apple Mac Pro for twice the cost of the Apple M2 Mac Pro and get half the speed.

******************************
So, Now, March, 2024

The above "race" was between the two "ultra-high" end computers last summer.

Since then, Apple has moved from M1, quickly through M2 (a marketing ploy, simply two M1s), and now the M3.

Link here

So, again, the race above, between ultra-high end computers last year, two huge desktops:

  • Intel best, $12,999: 10,390 mph
  • Apple best, $6,999: 21,453 mph

Now, the Apple MacBook Air with the new M3 chip, three wide going into the first turn:

  • Intel best, $12,999: 10,390 mph.
  • Apple best, $6,999: 21,453 mph.
  • Apple new M3 laptop, the 15" MacBook Air: $1,299: 10,120 mph.

Featuring an 8-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU, and support for up to 24GB of unified memory, the new MacBook Air is up to 60 percent faster than the model with M1 and up to 13x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Air, according to Apple.

RBN Energy: Chesapeake counters gas-price nadir with output slash, innovative inventory build.

Faced with sustained sub-$2/MMBtu natural gas prices and dim prospects for significant gas-demand growth until sometime next year, a number of major gas-focused E&Ps have been tapping the brakes on production and trimming their planned 2024 capex. But one company — Chesapeake Energy, slated to become the U.S.’s largest gas producer thanks to a recently announced acquisition — has taken a more dramatic step, implementing a novel strategy that will slash production by 25% but leave the E&P ready to quickly ramp up its output as soon as demand and prices warrant. In today’s RBN blog, we’ll review the 2024 guidance of the major U.S. gas producers and delve into the analysis of Chesapeake’s unusual approach.
Natural gas prices have declined severely over the past two or three weeks, and a few days ago (February 20) the March contract settled at $1.576/MMBtu. In nominal dollars, that was the lowest front-month price since the summer of 2020, but in real, inflation-adjusted terms it was the lowest price of the 21st century. The primary culprits are record-high production, which reached 106 Bcf/d in December 2023, combined with one of the mildest winters since the 1950s in many major U.S. heating markets. As a result, gas-storage levels are now more than 25% higher than the five-year average.

Target Sales Fall For First Time Since 2016 — March 5, 2024

Locator: 46678TARGET.

Link here. Beats on top and bottom lines. Did Carl miss the story?

Shares surge. Up 8% in pre-market trading.

Target’s profit pops 60%. Tough 2023; Serbs up for a better 2024.

All improved: supply chain, freight costs, and energy costs.

As in Target’s previous quarter, the company reaped the benefits of having leaner inventories as it recovers from the overstocking that dinged profitability in the second half of 2022. Pared-down warehouses means Target doesn’t have to mark items down as aggressively as it has in the past two years, padding the bottom line. Lower freight and shipping costs boosted profitability as well, the company said, as did broad-based efficiency efforts that Target says helped save over $500 million over the course of the year.
