RBN Energy: in Mexico, an Esentia gas pipeline deal puts a spotlight on the Gato Negro LNG project. Link here. Archived.

A natural gas pipeline deal that would give Esentia Energy a complete, start-to-finish link between the Permian Basin and Mexico’s Pacific Coast is highlighting a heretofore under-the-radar LNG project being planned at the end of that now-1,400-mile pipeline system.

Gato Negro LNG (Spanish for black cat), a proposed 9-MMtpa (1.2 Bcf/d) export facility in Manzanillo slated to come online in the early 2030s, would be yet another major consumer of Permian gas and provide direct access to all-important Asia-Pacific LNG markets.

In today’s RBN blog, we’ll discuss Esentia’s purchase of a TC Energy gas pipeline in west-central Mexico and the plan by other investors to build what would be one of Mexico’s largest midstream projects ever.

For a few years now, western Mexico has been viewed by many as a plausible — albeit complicated — place to pipe Permian-sourced gas, liquefy it into LNG, and ship it to Asia-Pacific buyers. Most important, it takes only 10 to 12 days for an LNG carrier to reach Asia from Mexico’s west coast — half the time involved in moving one from the U.S. Gulf Coast through the Panama Canal and on to Asia and less than one-third the time needed to send an LNG carrier around the Cape of Good Hope. And, as they say, time is money.

But as another saying goes, if it were easy, everyone would do it. Developing large midstream projects south of the border is, um, challenging, to say the least. Securing pipeline rights-of-way can be a nightmare, and long-haul pipeline projects often require strategic partnerships or long-term capacity agreements with state entities like Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE). Constructing pipelines can be problematic too — some parts of the country are controlled or contested by organized crime, forcing developers to invest heavily in private security.

Currently, there is one semi-operational LNG export terminal on the west coast of Mexico: the 3.25-MMtpa (440 MMcf/d) Energía Costa Azul (ECA; blue diamond in Figure 1 below) Phase 1 in Ensenada, Baja California state, which is co-owned by Sempra Infrastructure, with an 83.4% controlling interest, and TotalEnergies, with a 16.6% stake. (We say semi-operational because while the project produced its first LNG in June and sent out a single shipment in July, it has since been taken offline for repairs slated to be finished in Q4 2026.)

Sempra and TotalEnergies also are considering a possible 12-MMtpa (1.2-Bcf/d) Phase 2 at the ECA site but have not reached a final investment decision (FID) to date.

The headline is there: circular financing. This should get a lot of discussion CNBC tomorrow. LOL.

Two things:

  • read the social comments; and, then, remember,
  • market cap, AVGO, $1.64 trillion; and likely market cap of Anthropic, $2 trillion.

AVGO:

  • cash on hand: $20 billion;
  • operating cash flow (trailing): $87 billion

I'm sure they will structure deal so as not to have to "spend" the full $42 billion in one year.

$42 billion / $3 trillion = 1.4%.

I often make simple arithmetic errors. But I think that's correct.

China Halts October Fuel Exports as Global Diesel Crunch Deepens - Charles Kennedy -- Oilprice -- October 1, 2026

Locator: 51850DIESEL.

No "higher for longer." But rather, "much higher for longer." At least in the tea leaves.

If it's from Charles Kennedy it must be important.

Link here.

From the linked article:

China’s major refiners have suspended most refined fuel exports for October as Beijing prioritizes domestic supply security, removing another source of diesel, gasoline and jet fuel from an already severely constrained global market.

PetroChina has cancelled several gasoline and jet fuel cargoes scheduled for October, while Zhejiang Petrochemical did not schedule exports during China’s week-long National Day holiday, Reuters reported, citing four people familiar with the matter. Beijing has yet to authorize October exports outside Hong Kong and Macau, although shipments could resume after the holiday ends on October 7 depending on domestic inventories and refinery output.

The move follows a sharp deterioration in China’s own fuel-stock position. Kpler estimates commercial diesel and gasoil inventories are around 20 million barrels below pre-war levels, while gasoline stocks are roughly 9 million barrels short of the threshold Beijing wants restored before allowing exports to normalize.

China had significantly increased exports during the summer. Official customs data showed total oil-product exports reached 6.01 million tonnes in August, up 12.7% year-on-year and the highest since March 2024, according to S&P Global. At the time, Chinese refiners said Beijing had not yet restricted clean-product exports despite tightening domestic supply.

The reversal comes as global diesel supplies are already being squeezed by Middle Eastern disruptions and Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries. S&P Global warned this week that Asian fuel markets have limited surplus supply, meaning any further restriction on U.S. diesel exports would increase competition for Asian and Middle Eastern barrels.

Two US Stocks That Could Benefit From Europe's Winter Energy Crunch -- October 1, 2026

I find the linked article below interesting.

By Brian Sullivan, CNBC. I don't know if he knows his stuff, but he certainly is exposed to a lot of information.

It's a long article: link here.

To cut to the chase:

Much of that LNG supply [that will be needed by Europe this winter] is going to come from the United States. [The US has] more natural gas than we can export. If you’re looking to invest around this theme, two obvious names are exporters Cheniere Energy (LNG) and Venture Global (VG).

Less obvious: the biggest holders of U.S. LNG capacity are based in France and the U.K. They are TotalEnergies (TTE) and Shell (SHEL).

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné — arguably the most important CEO in global oil and gas — spoke with us this week about Europe’s energy challenges, prices, and more in a Power Insider interview.

Disclaimer:

  • I am not adding to any positions in energy.
  • I continue to add to positions in tech on dips.
  • I am slowly -- very slowly -- beginning to pivot to healthcare (Big Pharma, mostly through ETFs) and Big Banks (two names).

Global Electric Grid
IEA Perspective

Some very interesting data points in IEA's annual report. Overview here.

The full 2026 report here.

Two takeaways:
despite the surge in demand and expansion of the grid, if one does the math, it's hardly daunting; political backlash will be much more daunting than the dollars involved; and,
in the US, the growth in Texas / ERCOT will be daunting.

From the report:

  • In the US, the growth will be prominently in two ISO: PJM and ERCOT.
  • Despite a pause in connecting new data center projects in Texas to the grid, the West South Central region (Texas, for the most part) will still account for the largest regional share of growth in total electricity sales, totaling nearly 20% of nationwide growth in 2026 and almost 40% in 2027, according to the EIA’s forecast in the Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) for September.

This is not trivial.

    Corning -- October 1, 2026

    Locator: 51845CORNING.

    Story of the day: Corning.

    • currently the cover story on Forbes; and,
    • covered several times on CNBC yesterday.

The story over at Forbes begins:

The AI boom runs on Nvidia chips, staggering amounts of power and water—and a lot of glass. Corning makes most of it.

More precisely, the 175-year-old glass company makes the hair-thin optical fiber that hauls data between servers, buildings and data centers.

Demand has become so intense that:

    • Corning has recently signed multibillion-dollar agreements with Amazon, Nvidia, Meta and Verizon;
    • this week, AT&T announced a $3 billion deal with Corning to upgrade its home internet service; and,
    • Apple has committed another $2.5 billion for Corning’s Gorilla Glass, the tough, hard-to-scratch stuff used in iPhones and Apple Watches.

For one of the nation’s OG technology companies, founded in upstate New York in 1851 and responsible for everything from the glass in Thomas Edison’s lightbulbs to cookware known as Pyrex, AI infrastructure is a lively third act.

Corning’s stock has nearly doubled in the last 12 months compared to less than 16% for the S&P 500.

Southern Copper (SCCO) is up over 70% for the full year. SCCO hit a high of 214 very early this year (February, 2026) coming off a low of 73 on year earlier (April, 2025). Jim Cramer had a huge series on Corning earlier this year, but that's the only time I recall ever hearing about Corning on CNBC. Once or twice this past year, it seems I've head CNBC mention SCCO in passing, preferring FCX, Freeport-McMoRan.

    Micron: "cheap."

    P/E? When asked, answered: 5

Focused on "massive buyback" in 2027 / 2028. Ten percent, maybe fifteen percent.

Guidance: margins actually increase slightly in 1Q27 -- completely unexpected.

HBM: margins going up a lot -- could stay in high 80s a lot longer than expected

HBM vs DRAM: a decision for the company day in and day out -- everyone needs both.

Shortage of memory will last long than expected.
