Egypt -- WInd Energy -- $10 Billion -- Charles Kennedy -- June 28, 2024

Locator: 48018EGYPT.

This was posted yesterday, link here.

Now, today, Egypt, link here.

From the linked article:

A $10-billion wind power project in Egypt, one of the world’s biggest, is set to see its construction start by March 2026, delayed from this year due to the process of land acquisition, the chairman of one of the companies involved in the project told Bloomberg.

The wind farm with a planned capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW) is being developed by Infinity Power, the largest African renewable energy developer, Hassan Allam Utilities, and the UAE's flagship renewable energy company, Masdar.

The construction was delayed from the initial timeline which envisaged breaking ground in 2024, due to the process of acquiring the land for the wind power development in the Upper Egyptian region of West Sohag, Mohamed Mansour, chairman of Infinity Power.

This is how they're trying to sell this project:

The huge wind project is expected to produce 47,790 GWh of clean energy per year and cut around 9% of Egypt’s annual carbon emissions by displacing 23.8 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The wind farm will also help Egypt meet its strategic objective of sourcing 42% of its energy from renewables by 2030. The 10-GW wind farm will save the country an estimated US$5 billion in natural gas costs per year.

The Book Page

Actually two books.

Combee: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid and Black Freedom During the Civil War, Edda L. Fields-Black, 2024. Link here.

Night Flyer: Harriet Tubman and the Faith Dreams of a Free People, Tiya Miles, 2024.

It looks like that, of the two, I would prefer Tiya Mill's book.

Bakken, An Oily Play, Is Producing More Natural Gas Than The Mediterranean's Largest Offshore Natural Gas Field -- December 16, 2017

Egypt's giant natural gas field has started production, according to Bloomberg (pay wall) but Reuters also has the story:
  • the Zohr field may turn Egypt from LNG importer to gas exporter
  • Egypt’s Eni SpA-operated Zohr natural gas field will bring the country closer to its goal of energy self-sufficiency
  • discovered in 2015 by Italy’s Eni, the field contains an estimated 30 trillion cubic feet of gas
Gas from the Mediterranean’s largest offshore field is pumped to a facility in Port Said city, to be prepared for delivery to the national distribution network, with initial production of 350 million cubic feet per day. Daily output is set to rise to about 1 billion cubic feet in June and 2.7 billion by the end of 2019, he said.
So just how big is that "giant" field that has captured Bloomberg's attention? For natural gas, about the same size as the Bakken?

First the data points again, from that huge Egyptian gas field:
  • 350 million cubic feet per day initial production
  • 1 billion cubic feet per day by June (2018?)
  • 2.7 billion cubic feet by the end of 2019
Natural gas production from the "oily" Bakken, North Dakota, October, 2017 (most recent month being reported)
  • 63,918,772,000 cubic feet for the month of October
  • divided by 31 days = 2,061,895,879 bbls/day OR 2.061 billion cubic feet
It would be nice for Bloomberg to provide some comparison with the Bakken or the Permian. Thank you very much.

The Egyptian SItuation -- January, 2011

April 19, 2011: Well, this has worked out just fine. Saudi Arabia saw the US throw a 30-year ally under the bus; Saudi Arabia now dissing the US and cozying up to Russia and China; and, now, Iran and Egypt appear ready to link arms in friendship.

February 9, 2011: we learn that Saudi Arabia read the riot act to Obama; Saudi will support Mubarak and Egypt.  Obama is in over his head; does not know history of the Middle East or the importance of relationships

February 6, 2011: It looks like Mubarak has survived ... for the time being

January 31, 2011: Obama administration tells world Mubarak must leave; throws Mubarak under the bus

January 29, 2011 -- when it all began

Fox News:

Reports that oil fields in an OPEC country, Nigeria, could come under attack, taking advantage of the general unrest in the Muslim world.  10:00 a.m., January 29, 2011.
Boone Pickens:
Monday: oil prices up.  Won't predict a short-term rise in oil prices. Back to his talking points on American independence using our own resources.  He thinks "this" (the situation in Egypt) will "push America over the edge" -- finally get its action together and use our resources.  "Cheaper, abundant, and ours" -- obviously referring to natural gas.  10:05 a.m. January 29, 2011.
