Normally I don't use a "new post" to link a single article, but this article is very, very good, and very, very timely. Notice that industry experts suggest that the drilling program in the Bakken will not be complete until 2030 and that production will continue through 2100.
Note: the link above is often changed. If the link is broken, google "Seifert Bakken oil."

Lease Bids Update: February 2, 2010
Results of the February 2, 2010, North Dakota state oil and gas lease sale: a total of $47.3 million in bonuses with bids averaging $1,177 an acre.
Back of the napkin calculation.
Some folks coming to my web site have been searching for Rick Frazier. You can find more discussion here.
Highest bid: $7,300/acre, Irish Oil & Gas, Inc. Until this story, I had never heard of Irish O&G. This bid was for three 40-acre tracts in Mountrail County, section 13, T155N-R92W. Interestingly, other acres in Mountrail averaged $1,617/acre.The full results of this land lease can be found by clicking here. When you get there, use the drop down menu to select the county you are interested in, and then click on the "submit" button.
Second highest bid: Empire Oil (Williston): $6,600/acre for 100 acres in Mountrail County, section 5, T156N-R91W.
County with most acres leased: Burke County, 11,977 acres. Also surprising -- high bids. Averaged nearly $600/acre.
McKenzie County: 8,662 acres; average of $2,158/acre. Total bonuses paid: $18.7 million.
Mountrail County: 4,146 acres; average of $1,617/acre, which included the outlandish Irish O&G bid. Total bonuses paid: $6.7 million.
Williams County: 4,673 acres; average of $1,935/acre. Total bonuses paid: $9 million.
Irish O&G: a) highest bid, $7,300/acre, 3 40-acre tracts, section 13, 155-92; b) second highest bid, $6,700/acre, 40 acres in section 11, 155-92; c) $6,000/acre, 80 acres, section 9, 155-91; and, d) $5,900/acre, 40 acres, section 20, 153-95. Note: the tract in section 20, 153-95, was the highest bid paid for acreage in McKenzie County. The other three Irish O & G tracts were in Mountrail County.
Other bidders: Sundance O & G was highest bidder in Burke County ($1,060/acre); Rick Frazier paid $950/acre for two tracts. Intervention Energy LLC (Minot) was high bidder in Williams County, paying $4,500/acre for 2.73 acres, section 6, 156-103.
Back of the napkin calculation.
Let's say the estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) for a 1280-acre spaced well in Williams County is 1,000,000 barrels. That means each acre "produced" (1,000,000/1280) = 781 barrels (over the life of the well). At $60/barrel, that works out to about $47,000 (over the life of the well). (Remember, the best wells in North Dakota are estimated to have EURs of 700,000 barrels with current technology.)Now, back to that Irish Oil and Gas story (elsewhere I posted this):
If the well produced an average of 15,000 barrels/month the first year, the well would produce 180,000 barrels the first year. Again, each acre would "produce" (180,000/1,280) = 140 barrels. At $60/barrel, that works out to about $8,500.
At $4,500/acre, the buyer would have his investment back at six months, and from there, all profit (disregarding ever-increasing taxes).
Note: the napkin calculation was done by someone with irrational exuberance, and there is very likelihood that all this would pan out. Smile. But them's the numbers.
Special Circumstances: the Alger Excitement
18647 (C): Fidelity, Anderson 11-13H
17392 (C): BEXP, Anderson 1-11H, is in section 11.
Comment: the reason these two wells are so important -- an entity called the Irish Oil and Gas Company has just paid the equivalent of $4.7 million for 640 acres, by paying $7300/acre for 120 acres in sections 11, 12, and 13, T155N-92W, Alger Field. The two Anderson wells are located in the same sections that Irish bought leases in. These two wells are still on the confidential list. This is a better-than-average field but not THAT remarkable. What might be going on? For those who do not follow these things, acres in the township north of this location were going for as little as $600/acre (which "in the old days" was a nice price). So, what's going on in the Alger?

Sanish Field Update
UPDATES
March 30, 2014: the most incredible field, the Sanish.
July 14, 2013: Mike Filloon analyzes the Whiting wells drilled in the Sanish in 2006/2007.
March 30, 2012: update of Whiting Sanish oil wells.
August 1, 2011: The Sanish is Whiting's cash cow. It is my hunch that WLL is generating cash flow that from this field that pays for its entire Bakken operations. WLL currently has nine (9) rigs drilling in the Sanish.
February 21, 2011: Update on three monster Murex wells in the Sanish.
November 10, 2010: Huge amount of activity in the Sanish, almost all Whiting. Nine rigs on site in the Sanish.
September 10, 2010: Click here to see just how big the wells can be in the Sanish.
June 6, 2010: Commentary -- Focus on Whiting
May 5, 2010:
Take a look at Banshee 2-1H, #18309, a Slawson well: 81k in less than four months; works out to $6 million at the wellhead. A very, very good well; a short lateral; t12/09; cum 502K 11/17;
March 8, 2010:
Township 154-91 is "owned" by Whiting and Murex. This township, section 27, holds the record IP, file #17612, the Maki. In March, 2010, Whiting spudded the Jorgensen 12-27, file #18530, in the same section. The two wells are 1900 feet apart. This is very, very exciting. Was the Maki a Bakken and the Jorgensen a TFS? After five months, there are reports that the Maki is still producing 1,200 bbls/month. [In fact, as of 1/16, Maki (#17612) is still producing 2,500 bbls/month.] t10/09; cum 839K 11/17;

Original Post
February 22, 2010:
The Sanish oil field is one of the two most prolific fields in the Williston Basin, the other being the Parshall. The Sanish and the Parshall oil fields sit right next to each other, like twins; the Sanish is on the west; the Parshall is on the east.
The Sanish is a rectangular field. The field encompasses four entire townships (154-91, 154-92, 153-91, and 153-92) except for 3 sections not in 154-92; and parts of four other townships (153-93, 52-91, 152-92, and 152-93). The latter three townships are in the northern edge of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation (FBIR). In all, the Sanish has about 192 sections. The very interesting Alger oil field borders the Sanish on the north.
There are no hamlets, villages, towns, or cities in the Sanish. The city of Stanley, ND, is eight miles north of the Sanish field. If you drive south out of Stanley on State Highway 8, the Sanish field will on your right (to the west) and the Parshall field will be on your left, to the east, over a couple of sections. The highway is entirely within the Sanish oil field at that point, but it almost divides the Sanish and Parshall oil fields. State Highway 8 may be the most traveled road in North Dakota; certainly it has the most truck traffic of any highway in the state.
Currently there are 81 producing wells off the confidential list; there are an additional 40 wells on the confidential list, all of which will come off the list this year (2010).
There are currently 10 rigs actively drilling in the Sanish (May 24, 2010) and most of them will move to other sites in the Sanish. There are currently 12 permits in the Sanish, all of which will probably be drilled this year.
Although Slawson, Fidelity, Murex, Zenergy and others have wells in the Sanish, this field is "owned" by Whiting.
The Parshall and the Sanish remain the most exciting fields in the Williston Basin (in North Dakota).
February 13, 2010:
The Sanish is one of the two most prolific fields in the Williston Oil Basin in the current oil boom. The other is the Parshall. These two fields sit alongside each other, north of the river, and east of Williston. It's hard to believe but there are no villages, towns, or cities in this field -- at least none big enough to show up on the NDIC GIS map. That map shows "urban centers" as small as Springbrook, North Dakota, which has a population of 26. Yes, 26. At least according to Wikipedia.
The Sanish is a roughly rectangular field comprised of about 192 sections. Except for three sections, the entirety of four townships are within the field: 154-91, 154-92, 153-91, and 153-92. In addition, there are a few sections in four other townships.
On February 13, 2010, this is the breakdown of activity in the Sanish: 75 producing wells, 40 wells on the confidential list, eleven (11) wells being drilled, and 15 new permits.
The producing wells are split about evenly between long laterals and short laterals.
Who are the operators/producers in the Sanish?
154-91: Murex and WhitingHere are the "runs" of 19 wells for the month of December, 2009. Again, these are only 19 wells. Remember, there are 115 producing wells (40 on the confidential list) and 11 new wells being drilled. I am not aware of any "infill" wells being drilled.
154-92: Whiting and Fidelity
153-91: Whiting
153-92: Whiting, some Fidelity
You know, as I ramble and as I opine, the "runs" of these 19 wells are spectacular, but these are only 19 wells, and that represents only about 10% of the total number of wells in this one field.
Update by Township in the Sanish
I put this information together because I am very interested to see how that third well (between two existing wells) will do; and I wanted to capture the status of the field before WLL started their "3rd well program."
