Bakken -- EOR Update -- June 17, 2026

Sent to me this evening from a reader. Thank you very much. In a short, throw-away note I sent the reader -- I am very, very aware of EOR and the fact that there's a lot of oil left in the ground -- I remember the early days of the Bakken boom -- the Whiting folks telling us that only 1 to 3 percent of the oil was being captured, but they knew they could get to 12%.  

I was not aware of this article -- it says only 15% of the Bakken oil has been recovered. Completely believable. The amount of oil in any of these oil fields is directly proportional to the price of oil. So, maybe we'll see some of that oil considering what's going on in the Middle East right now.

Link here. It's not so much that the USA has the lead but look at how big that lead is -- greater than 40% more than Russia or Saudi Arabia. Forty percent is not trivial. And with regard to Russia, the gap will likely widen.

KODA Resources Completes Its First Four-Mile Lateral -- 142 Frack Stages -- April 6, 2026

  • 42395, drl, KODA Resources, Ale 2436-1BHN, East Goose Lake.  

A reader just sent me this note ... "a well in Daneville Township in Divide County has just been fracked with 142 stages.  It is located at 161-103-13-12-1 and 162-103-36 which is the first four-mile spacing unit for KODA.  No IP yet but expect it around April 28th.  The permit number is 42395."

The reader is wondering if this number of frack stages -- 142 -- sets a new record in the Bakken? I have no idea but it's the most I have ever seen. Also noteworthy --  this is KODA Resources first four-mile lateral.

Re-Entry -- Initial Production Extrapolates To 117K BBls Over 30 Days -- BR -- #17309 -- Washburn, Charlson -- March 7, 2026

The well: 

  • 17309, AL/TA/270, BR, Washburn 44-36H, Charlson, t7/08; re-entered, 4/25; cum 266K 1/26; first month after re-entering: 23K.
    • offline for five years; in 2020 down to <400 bbls / month;
    • back in production 4/25; 23,371 bbls over 6 days extrapolates to an astounding 116,855 bbls crude oil over 30 days; 
      • originally drilled back in 2008; 
      • re-entry process started on August 23, 2024; 
      • after reaching the total depth of the original hole, the planned extension of the well began drilling at 1415 hrs CT August 27, 2024. 
      • the extension was drilled to TD of 20,496' MD on August 28, 2024. 
    • the rig was then walked to the next well on the pad (most likely #40566; the third well on this 3-well pad was #40567).

From the file report: 

The well bore:

The primary zone started 26’ beneath the top of the Middle Bakken Formation. 

This pay zone was picked for its production potential and quality of reservoir rock. This was evidenced with gas readings from 4u up to 1,004u, an average of 210u from 11,360’ MD to 18,549’ MD. 

This well ended with a top of our lateral drilling at 10,110’ TVD and the base of our drilling a 10,045’ TVD. 

We did have to make two full trips while drilling; once for the curve assembly at the KOP of 10,600’ MD, and again for the lateral assembly at 11,356’ MD. Five bits used.

If the report stated the percent the well bore was in the seam, I missed it.
