Break-even prices. This is from a WSJ article from late 2018. One would assume the numbers were based on data from 2Q18 and 3Q18. They wouldn't have the data from 4Q18 although I doubt there would have been much change. [See comments.]
From the linked article:
From the linked article:
Estimates by consulting firm R.S. Energy Group peg break-evens excluding land costs and overhead at about $37 for the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico, $42 for the Eagle Ford in South Texas and $47 for the Bakken in North Dakota.
But companies require much higher oil prices in order to come out ahead if more of those necessary expenses are taken into account, the consulting firm’s data show. All-inclusive break-evens are about $51 in the Permian, $57 in the Eagle Ford and $64 in the Bakken, according to R.S. Energy.

Wow, I'm in a great mood. After ten years or so of using the same remote control, we now have a new one. The old one was starting to act up. It worked but certain "keys" were becoming less responsive -- some days worse than others. About ten days ago, from Amazon, I ordered a new "universal remote control" with the word SPECTRUM emblazoned across the bottom. Since we have Spectrum (Time Warner), I figured it would work. There were half a dozen (or more) remote control gadgets available from which to choose. I figured: at $6.99 how could I go wrong? LOL.
The remote control arrived about two weeks ago. I did not open the package. The "old" remote control was sort of okay, and I did not want to be disappointed if the new gadget didn't work.
Finally, today, I put in the two double A batteries (the Japanese/Chinese included a pair) and tried it out.
It didn't work.
I pulled out the directions.
It now works.
And, wow, it's fast, smooth, responsive. Awesome.
Flipping back and forth:
Oh, why not?
Debt watch: Chase zeroes out all credit card debt for all Canadian accounts. No questions asked. Google it if you want to find the story. No link; story everywhere.

National Grid To "Curb Returns To Investors" -- August 11, 2019
Updates
August 16, 2019: lies, lies, and more lies.
Original Post
Link here. To get past the paywall, google: financial times can national grid transition to renewable energy.
But for National Grid, the joke was a reminder that the worst blackout since 2003 came as it faces uncomfortable questions about its monopoly in running a fast-changing electricity system that is moving towards cleaner-burning fuels.
The opposition Labour party has called for the company, which was privatised almost 30 years ago, to be brought back under state control.
The regulator, Ofgem, has vowed to curb its returns to investors. The company is navigating the government’s highly ambitious overhaul of the country’s energy supplies, which involves dramatically increasing the amount of wind and solar on the grid.
Memo to investors: move on.
I provided a solution to this problem some days ago. This is not rocket science.

Why I Love To Blog -- Reason #1 -- Feedback From Readers -- August 11, 2019
It's hard to believe but I had a great post on PBR almost ten years ago, July 20, 2010:
In addition to being number four in production of oil in the continental United States, number one in dry edible beans, and number one in honey production, North Dakota can now add another first: first in broncing bulls.Chad Berger:
Up until this year the number one contractor for rodeo bulls came from Oklahoma or Texas. The best bulls in the world now come from North Dakota.
This year (2010_ PBR Professional Bull Riders Stock was named Contractor of the Year. PBR is located seven miles south of Mandan, ND. Look for the dust raised by stomping bulls.
Chad Berger's ride to the top was meteoric and took only a bit longer than a ride on one of his bulls. So, now, fast forward to earlier this summer, from The Bismarck Tribune:
In 2003, Berger, a longtime professional cattle buyer, started building his own string of bulls that now numbers about 200 head, including Professional Bull Riders association stars Big Tex and Code Blue.
The Mandan-based, eight-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year – including the last five in a row – is primed for No. 9 with another loaded pen of behemoths in 2019.
More from the article:With three of the top six ranked bulls in the world – Smooth Operator (No. 2), Smooth Wreck (No. 3) and Legit (No. 6) -- and six of the top 16, it’s been another banner year even by Berger’s lofty standards.
Berger will have many of his top-ranked bulls inside the Bismarck Event Center for the 19th Annual Dakota Community Bank & Trust PBR Bull Riding Challenge this weekend. The action begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
The stars are turning out.
Among the A-list of riders coming to town are current world No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme, No. 3 Chase Outlaw, No. 4 Jess Lockwood, No. 5 Cody Teel, No. 6 Cooper Davis, No. 7 Luciano De Castro, No. 8 Derek Kolbaba and No. 9 Ryan Dirteater.
“All the guys you see on TV, the top bull riders, the best bull fighters, the top funny man (Flint Rasmussen), they’re all going to be there,” Berger said.
For the team challenge, Berger set up a draft with five captains. Held in April in Sioux Falls, S.D., each captain drafted three bull riders to create teams of four. The team captains are Lockwood, Davis, Vitor Leme, two-time World Champion J.B. Mauney, and six-time PBR World Finals qualifier Stetson Lawrence from Williston.
Lawrence’s team is made up of all Native Americans, including Dirteater – replacing the injured Colton Jesse – plus Cody Jesus and Cannon Cravens.

Update On The "Recent" Lodgepole Well Drilled By Hess -- August 11, 2019
From the July, 2019, issue of Geo News, ND USGS publication.
What have we learned?
If the TOC truly is as high as 8%, this formation has huge potential, but porosity is a huge problem -- solution? hydraulic fracturing.
Re-posting the entire note from the original post, July 4, 2015.
Monthly Production Data:
September 19, 2015: back on ACTIVE status; production profile most recent few months:
Update on this well.
I posted this back on August 17, 2014:
This is an important well.
See notes below the production profile.
Update as of July 3, 2015:
Note the well is now active.
There were no new sundry forms after the August, 2014 update. The well was put on a pump o/a August 15, 2014.
The original geologist's summary back when the well was first drilled (the following includes direct quotes and paraphrasing, but mostly direct quotes):
The only other active well in the immediate area:
What have we learned?
- TI-WAO-157-95-14H-1 (TI-WAO)
- drilled in 2013
- initially completed in 2014
- sustained and continued production did not begin until mid-2015
- other vertical Lodgepole wells in northwestern ND, file numbers; PA = permanently abandoned; last date the well produced; A = active (producing)
- 6789: PA, 1980
- 7834: PA, late 1990s; Lodgepole: considered DRY
- 8645: PA, 1982; considered DRY
- 7820: A, West Tioga oil field; H. Borstad 34-1; a Madison well with test of Lodgepole (PNA); t11/181; cum 251K 6/19 (Madison, not Lodgepole)
- 26738 (TI-WAO); A
- formation: between ~ 9,300 feet (top) and 11,000 feet (bottom) vertical depth
- at the TI-WAO, between 9,000 feet and 9,600 feet, with well bore at 9,200 feet
- TI-WAO
- spud: December 6, 2013
- total depth: May 16, 2014
- TD: 13,625 feet which included a 4,400 foot lateral, middle of the Lodgepole Formation, approximately 400 feet above the upper Bakken (note the thickness of this formation)
- Lodgepole sits above the Bakken; Scallion is part of the Lodgepole, last major formation before the Bakken top
- origins of Lodgepole oil? possibly a combination of Bakken shales and inter-formational petroleum source beds
- TOC? in southern Saskatchewan, Lodgepole carbonate beds with TOC values of 4 - 8 wt%, which classifies as excellent quality petroleum source rock (the Bakken is as high as 11%, maybe greater; Saudi Arabia 2 - 5%)
- 4,400-ft lateral; about half the length of the typical 10,000-foot laterals used in the Bakken
- no proppant; 37 stages; 14,782 bbls of fluid (620,844 gallons)
- produced at a rate of over 100 bbls/day (extrapolates to 6,000 bbls/month had it been a long lateral)
- API: 44.5 API gravity
- first 24 hours: 103 bbls of oil; 143 bbls of water
- porosity: only 1 - 2% but increased to 4 - 6% near the TI-WAO target horizon
- permeability: all less than/equal to 1 millidarcy, similar to the Bakken-Three Forks
- recent production:

If the TOC truly is as high as 8%, this formation has huge potential, but porosity is a huge problem -- solution? hydraulic fracturing.

Note the well is now active.
There were no new sundry forms after the August, 2014 update. The well was put on a pump o/a August 15, 2014.
The original geologist's summary back when the well was first drilled (the following includes direct quotes and paraphrasing, but mostly direct quotes):
- this is an experimental well testing the production potential of the Middle Lodgepole
- thirty-foot lagged samples were caught from 9,568 feet through the end of the lateral section at 13,625 feet [short lateral] in the Middle Lodgepole formation
- true vertical depth of the target formation: 9,219 feet
- after the pumps were started gas would peak at 9,568 units (sic) before the gas buster came into use
- "it should also be noted that the command center faced away from the flare stack and rig"
"Neset personnel would intermittently leave the command center to look for a flare but none was observed" - saltwater based drilling fluid was used throughout the lateral
- the target window would be ten feet
- the Lodgepole is a massive body of limestone in the Madison group
Middle LodgepoleDrilling
Bakken-Three Forks
- 9110' TVD - 9290' TVD for a total of 180 feet of core
- this core will include 30 feet above the middle Lodgepole, middle Lodgepole, and 30 feet below the middle Lodgepole; all of this core is in the Lodgepole
- 9550' TVD - 9780' TVD for a total of 230 feet of core
- 20' above the Upper Bakken Shale, Upper Bakken, Middle Bakken, Lower Bakken, Three Forks 1st Bench, Three Forks 2nd Bench, and 30' of the Three Forks 3rd Bench
- the rat hole for the open hole logs will end up in the Birdbear formation
- spud rig: December 6, 2013
- drilling rig: May 13, 2014
- cease drilling: May 16, 2014 (3 days)
- 37 stages
- acid frack; no proppant
The only other active well in the immediate area:
- 8257, 176, McRae & Henry, Ltd, Gallagher 43-15, vertical Madison well, t7/81; cum 160K 5/15;
- 12790, 242/115, Hess, Pederson 14-33, Silurian/Ordovician, the Silurian was drilled in 1991; before it was abandoned at the end of 2008, cum 814K bbls of oil; 1.4 bcf gas
