Cabernet Field Update

November 22, 2014: all permits from beginning of calendar year 2012 to November 22, 2014, were updated. See "Permits" below. Cumulative production for all other wells also updated; see below, in this section of "Updates."

February 7, 2012: a relatively nice OXY USA Cabernet well, the Matthew Schmidt

August 6, 2011: see also a bit of trivia on the Cabernet

August 6, 2011: IPs and cumulative production numbers updated for wells below (dated March 9, 2011). Here are a couple of them with high cumulatives:
  • 18644, 1,148, OXY USA/Anschutz, cum 332K 9/14, test date 4/10, State 1-25-36H-144-97X
  • 17899, TA/1,191, OXY USA/Anschutz, cum 157K 4/12, test date 9/9, Stroh 11-1H, the only short lateral in this field; last produced January, 2012 (with exception of 73 bbls in June, 2012;
  • 18423, 2,531, OXY USA/Anschutz, cum 279K 9/14; test date 11/10, Raphael Stroh 1-13-24H-143-97, actually in Fayette

March 9, 2011: After a flurry of activity a couple of years ago, this field has been relatively quiet. A couple of new permits in past year. The field is "owned" by Anschutz (now OXY USA), although CLR and Slawson each have an operated well. There is one short lateral, but all the rest are long laterals. Going somewhat north to south; test date (month/year):
  • 20147, 378, Slawson, Dagger 1-10H; s3/11; t10/11; cum 36K 9/14; (problems?)
  • 20537, 630, CLR, Carl 1-11H; s6/11; t10/11; cum 108K 9/14;
  • 18892, 340, OXY USA/Anschutz, Evelyn Kary 1-15-22H-144-97; spud 3/11/11; cum 74K 9/14;

  • 18360, DRY, OXY USA/Anschutz, State 1-25-36H-144-97 (wildcat)
  • 18644, 1,148, OXY USA/Anschutz, cum 332K 9/14;, test date 4/10, State 1-25-36H-144-97X
  • 18427, 876, OXY USA/Anschutz, cum 165K 9/14; test date 5/10, Matthew Schmidt 1-35-2H-143-97
  • 18343, 48, OXY USA/Anschutz, Jaeger State 1-34-27H-144-97; t12/10; working on it to get better production; flowing; cum 271K 9/14;
  • 18599, 1,003, OXY USA/Anschutz, test date 1/11; Andrew Schmidt 1-3-10H-143-97, goes south into unnamed are; t1/11; cum 109K 9/14; erratic production; still flowing; no pump, actually in Crooked Creek field
  • 17899, 1,191, OXY USA/Anschutz, cum 157K 9/14;, test date 9/9, Stroh 11-1H, the only short lateral in this field
  • 18423, 2,531, OXY USA/Anschutz; t11/10, cum 279K 9/14, test date 11/10, Raphael Stroh 1-13-24H-143-97, actually in Fayette

  • 18424, 2,409, OXY USA/Anschutz, Kenneth Stroh 1-12-1H-143-97; test date 9/10; cum 451K 9/14;
  • 20797, 1,208,  Continental Resources, Entzel 1-26H, Cabernet, Bakken; s8/11; t12/11; cum 266K 9/14;
  • 18237, PNC, OXY USA/Anschutz, State 34-36H, Cabernet, Bakken
Note the two state wells; both in the same section; one dry; one very, very good -- but the dry well was due to bad casing; the well site was moved 38 feet:
  • 18360, DRY, OXY USA/Anschutz, State 1-25-36H-144-97 (wildcat)
  • 18644, 1,148, OXY USA/Anschutz, State 1-25-36H-144-97X; s1/10; t4/10; cum 332K 9/14;

March 27, 2010: The rig that was on #18644 has now moved and is on #18427. (I'm not sure this is correct.)

Cabernet Field
Accurate As Of Date Of Original Post
Generally, This Section Not Updated

If it weren't for the fact that Anschutz has caught my interest and the fact that Anschutz has had some good wells I would not have gotten too excited about the Cabernet field.

The Cabernet field is a small field, only 21 sections, mostly in township T144N-97W. It is in Dunn County, about 20 miles due north of Dickinson, or about 20 miles southwest of Killdeer, which is well southwest of the reservation. It is nestled in between three other fields that are more active and have had some good wells: the Little Knife to the northwest; Murphy Creek to the northeast; and, the Fayette, to the southeast. Anschutz is also very active in the Fayette. It appears that the Cabernet and the Fayette fields are "owned" by Anschutz.

Right now there are only six file numbers from the current boom inside the Cabernet, including Anschutz's short lateral, #17899: the Stroh 11-1H well had an IP of 1,191 which was reported January, 2010. The rig that was on site #18644, State 1-25-36H-144-97X, has now moved and is now drilling #18427, Matthew Schmidt 1-35-2H-143-97.

There are four (4) other file numbers, all on the confidential list, in the Cabernet: #18343, #18427, #18359, and #18360.  Three of the wells (are on the same site, #18644, #18359, and #18360: State 1-25-36H-144-97X; Kary 1-24-13H-144-97; and, State 1-25-36H-144-97.  These three wells are only two miles north of the Stroh 11-1H. We will soon get to see if the Stroh was an outlier or if the Cabernet is a great field, albeit very small.

As with most other fields in North Dakota, there are no hamlets, villages, or towns; just beautiful scenery, enjoyed by pronghorn and pheasants.
