The precision to two decimal places --
  • is unnecessary
  • is most likely a false precision
  • but gives the number more "gravitas" (who would believe the number if it were simply rounded to 410?)

    to get a parts per million reading to two decimal places you'd need 100 million parts of air...then, to make sure your air sample wasn't an outlier, you'd probably want 10 100 million part samples...so that's a billion parts of air you'd have to count...counting one per second, it'd take you 31 years..
