  1. What is the very first case about? We have acerage in the Ellsworth leased to Hess that has been permitted for one well...but they added a request to make it four in Mar. However with the exception of what looks like drilling to hold leases, there hasn't been a lot of activity. I may misunderstand, but this left me wondering if there is some issue between the oil companies. Thanks.

    1. See FAQ #49 at this link:

      http://www.milliondollarwayblog.com/p/faq.html

Early in the process, operators are issued permits to drill. Whether they drill or not once they get a permit depends on a lot of factors. Permits are good for a year, and can be easily renewed for $100/year.

With regard to lack of activity, I don't know if you mean a) in the Bakken in general; b) Hess in general; or, c) your area.

      a) This will be a record year for drilling in the Bakken

      b) Only CRL has more wells on the confidential list than Hess; and Hess has a whopping 186 wells on the confidential list (yes, Hess has been very active this year in the Bakken); see

      http://www.milliondollarwayblog.com/2012/08/some-random-statistics-from-williston.html

      c) The Ellsworth is near the heart of the Bakken and is very, very active. Look at the NDIC GIS map server for a string of confidential wells in Ellsworth.

But, yes, I don't see a Hess rig in Ellsworth field tonight unless I missed it.

    2. my siblings and I have MRs in the Hanks/Zahl areas of nW Williams. What references should I be looking for regarding that? Barr Butte? Bull Butte? Kalil Field? It's been difficult to follow your posts without first understanding where our interests are and how they are affected.

      Thx. Nice site!

    3. Regarding Hanks/Zahl area.

I use the names of the oil fields as designated by the NDIC and found on their NDIC GIS map server, linked at the side bar at the right.

At the NDIC site (https://www.dmr.nd.gov/oilgas/) click on GIS map server on their sidebar.

If I am reading the GIS map server correctly, there is no activity in T159N-R100W/T159N-R101W where Zahl is located. A bit west, located in T159N-R102W, there are two wells on/near the confidential list in Bar Butte oil field, a 4-section oil field. Both those wells are Newfield wells; one is inside Bar Butte oil field and the other is just outside the field, and therefore classified as a wildcat.

Just a few miles to the west of that is Hanks oil field, less than 2 sections in size, there is one well on confidential status, also a Newfield well. There is one producing well that runs a horizontal through Hanks oil field:

19635: a Newfield well that was completed in March, 2011, and has produced about 51,000 bbls to date.

Bull Butte is south of this area; I sometimes refer to it as the "Kalil" field because of some nice Kalil wells there, but it is not an official oil field name.

Because Bar Butte and Hanks fields are so small, it is unlikely I will do a stand-alone post on them any time soon. I have seen Fertile Valley mentioned every so often (it is north of Hanks / Bar Butte). I have seen Climax mentioned a few times; Climax oil field is south of Hanks. From amount of activity in this area, I doubt I will talk about it much on my blog.

There is another wildcat in your area, south of Hanks oil field, another Newfield well. It is in an undesignated area, and thus a wildcat, but if there is oil there, they will extend one of the designated oil fields, such as Climax, Grenora, or Hanks.

Hope that helps. Again, there may be typographical errors in this but that's how I see it.

  2. In case 18698, ther is one well permitted and Fidelity is asking for 3 additional wells in the 1280 spacing in 140-96, sections 6 and 7. That's pretty far on the east side with no wells east of that, but a lot of activity just to the west. What does that mean?

    1. 1. It may simply mean that Fidelity likes what it sees with its first permit in this spacing unit and plans to drill at least four in this unit.

      2. As you noted, there is little (no?) Bakken activity this far to the east, but Whiting is very, very active to the west (Pronghorn Sand). That is true for the Bakken boom.

But the Dickinson field, in which this spacing unit sits, is notable for some monster Tyler wells, wells that have produced over a million bbls of oil, some of which are still producing:
