  2. The "black mountain hills" refers to the Black Hills of South Dakota. The song was written in India, written primarily by Paul McCartney. There is no evidence that Paul ever visited the Black Hills, or the saloon referenced, which makes me wonder again about the reality of reincarnation.

My gut feeling is that Paul McCartney was a saloon honky-tonk piano player during the Black Hills gold rush, and may have, in fact witnessed the shooting of Wild Bill Hickok in a Dakota Territory saloon.

But no, there is no connection with the Bakken.

The Black Hills are immediately south of the Bakken; straight south of Williston, ND -- about 6 hours by car. I vacationed every summer in the Black Hills with my family when I was growing up in Williston.

The TFS stretches into northwestern South Dakota, but probably not into the Black Hills.
