Eggs Again, It's Get Tedious -- Seriously -- Next Time You Make Your Weekly Shopping Trip, See What Percent Of Your $250 Grocery Bill Is Due To Eggs -- January 26, 2025

Locator: 48401EGGS.

Wow, these guys are obsessed with eggs.

Last week in response to some news article, I wrote:

Inflation watch: yes, I know eggs are expensive, or better said, folks and the press are telling us that eggs are expensive.

Today, at Walmart, a dozen large eggs were selling for $4.17; a dozen extra large eggs, for $4.67.
Are eggs expensive or have Americans simply had an incredibly good bargain all these years?
This morning, for breakfast, I had one egg and a half-ounce of Spam mixed with the egg. Yes, a half-ounce; that's all I need and a couple of slices of toast and a damn good cup of coffee (a nod to David Lynch). The Keurig K-cup cost 57 cents. The egg: 4.67 / 12 = 39 cents. A typical candy bar costs $1.50 (range: $1.00 to $2.00 for the "typical" American candy bar). So, eggs? Historically much higher prices now, but "high-priced"? I honestly don't know.
I know a new Cybertruck can cost about $100,000. Americans have it pretty good in the big scheme of things.

Now, today, again, a long, long article on the price of eggs. It gets tedious. Link here.

If there's a single product that epitomizes what consumers hate about high prices nowadays, it's eggs.
People buy them regularly and therefore know their exact cost. They're ingredients in a lot of foods. And if you're looking for a protein source, they're one of the healthier alternatives out there that won't break the bank.
Except they're not so inexpensive anymore. The cost of a dozen grade-A large eggs hit $4.15 in December, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, up from $2.51 a year ago.
The average price of eggs hasn't been below $3 since June, and it hasn't been below $2 since the start of 2022. Wholesale prices paid by entities such as restaurants, grocery stores, and schools are much steeper: According to the global commodities tracker Expana, wholesale Midwest large eggs are $7.27 a dozen; the five-year average is $2.10.
There's a lot of variation depending on where you live and where you shop — eggs can be a loss leader, meaning grocery stores discount them to get people in the door, and big-box stores in particular price them quite low.
Citing data from Circana, Expana said the average cost of large eggs among smaller retailers was $5.31 a dozen. They're probably cheaper at Walmart and Costco.
If you're in a state with laws about cage-free eggs, you might see higher prices than you would in a state without them. No one knows when prices will come back down.
This interminable bird flu might not be an aberration, and other factors, such as the push to move toward cage-free eggs, may keep prices up, too. The acute causes of this price spike — a drop in supply, a jump in demand — point to long-term structural issues that might stick around.

At least they're honest -- blaming it on avian (bird) flu and not on government spending. LOL.

By the way, MSN articles like this encourage stockpiling. One can't store eggs as long as toilet paper but as noted earlier there's also an element of hoarding leading to a rise in prices.

It gets tedious. And it gets tedious to read this on the blog yet again. Sorry.

Word Of The Day

In Dutch painting: tronie.

A tronie is a Dutch painting that depicts an exaggerated facial expression or a stock character in costume. The word "tronie". is Dutch for "face."

The most well-known examples of tronies -- at least for me -- are those by Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675). See Vermeer, Pieter Roelofs and Gregor J. M. Weber, Thames & Hudson, c. 2023, a museum catalogue book for the Vermeer exhibitioin at the Rijksmuseum, a joint venture with The Frick Collection in New York, although undated (?) was probably held during calendar year 2023, being made available during the launch of the catalogue (coffee table book).

Reminder:

  • Shakespeared died 1616;
  • the Great Plague (England), 1665 - 1666.
  • Vermeer: 1632 - 1675.

Other than what we know through his paintings, we know almost nothing about Vermeer. He left no letters, notes, or diaries. No known pictures of Vermeer exist. There are some that some believe are Vermeer but are not known for fact to be of Vermeer.

With three minutes left to go, Philadelphia Eagles, 55 - 23, trouncing the Washington Commanders.

Over / under: 47.5.

Right now: 78.

Eagles: -6. Well, that didn't go well. A lot of folks lost a lot of money. Of course, a lot also won a lot. That's how it works. LOL.

The second game, Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs has already begun. Whoo-hoo! And great news. Two of the best covering the game: Jim Nantz and Tony Romo. Without hesitation, Tony Romo is my favorite; Troy Aikman is okay; Tom Brady, third of three; a bit too dry. No humor. A bot.

Wow, I Love This President -- What's Fair, Is Fair -- Day 6 Of His Presidency -- On A Sunday And A Flurry Of Activitiy -- January 26, 2025

Before we get started: President Trump deploys the 101st Airborne to the southern border. The 82nd Airborne and the 10th Mountain Division are on standby; they have been sent "warning" orders that they may augment the 101st. A lot of federal money being "sent" to Texas.

Now, back to the Colombian dust-up.

US-Colombia? This is how The NYT sees it:

Coffee and flowers. LOL.

OAC was particularly concerned about inflationary effects with regard to coffee and flowers. LOL. I cannot make this up. Talk about tone-deaf. I can guarantee you Americans will give up Starbucks and flowers if it means fewer Colombian murderers and rapists on American streets.

Trump: posts FAFO. Seen everywhere on TikTok. Maureen Dowd, apparently, was completely unaware.

When Colombia "dumped on" Trump, it was immediately posted as a "breaking story" by The NYT. When the story broke that the Colombian president caved, from The NYT: crickets. LOL.

It looks like if one wants breaking news for the next four years, one will need to check in with Fox, not The NYT. Now, 30 minutes later, and The NYT still hasn't reported it.

At 5:39 p.m. CT, The NYT updates its front-page headlines but has not yet updated the Colombian story. There will be a lot of egg on my face if the story turns out to be bogus. Let's check X. Apparently it's real, link here. Later: 11:31 p.m. CT, The NYT finally has a "breaking" headline that confirms that Colombia "caved." However, the original story has hardly changed. The lede remains the same and only later in the article is it mentioned that Colombia will bring back the criminals on the Colombian president's plane. Wow. Fox News scooped the The NYT by several hours. Anyway, enough of this.

The one-two punch. SecState Rubio; President Trump.

Mexico watching closely.

Again, it needs to be fact-checked, confirmed, vetted before ABC will report it.

Leadership. Link here. Probably one of the best things I've ever read -- diplomatically.

I give up. Almost an hour after the story broke and Fox News reported it and X verified it, The NYT has not still not reported. Apparently The NYT is waiting for the OKAY from AOC. Wow, this is amazing; another 15 minutes goes by and The NYT still not reporting it.

To bring "dignity" to these murderous criminals, Colombian president will bring them back in style in his own presidential plane. Okay.  Wow, the NY Times scooped by Fox -- NY Times, at 5:30 p.m. CT, is still not reporting this story. Apparently it doesn't fit their narrative. Again, it's possible the story is bogus.

Not yet being reported by The New York Times. It appears The NYT simply can't update as quickly as news changes. The big story was not Trump's reaction; the big story was Colombia's reaction, how fast it caved.

I occasionally use T (ATT) as a place to "park" cash. More often, I use SCHD.

I've never held FANG.

Chord Energy is the most exciting operator in the Bakken right now: Whiting, Oasis, and now Enerplus.

Trump 2.0 -- Day 6 -- Colombia Hit With Tariffs, Visa Restrictions Over Feud With Deportation Flights -- January 26, 2025

Updates

Later, 5:10 p.m. CT:

The one-two punch. SecState Rubio; President Trump.

Mexico watching closely.

Again, it needs to be fact-checked, confirmed, vetted before ABC will report it.

Not yet being reported by The New York Times so it may not be true.

Original Post

This is huge for Mexico. Mexico is treading on thin ice if the country interferes with any more deportation flights.  The nice thing about Trump: he warns and then acts. No long-drawn out negotiations, speeches.

The first set of sanctions/tariffs is always fairly light. If "ally" does not get the message, sanctions/tariffs can be increased.

Perhaps time to start flying "rejected" illegal immigrants to Guantanamo Bay.

On another note, not one day has gone by that President Trump is not making headlines.
