Williston: Fastest Growing Micropolitan Area -- Second Year In A Row

The Dickinson Press is reporting:
Williston ranks as the fastest-growing micropolitan area in the country for the second year, the U.S. Census Bureau said today.
Census population estimates show that the Williston area gained 2,281 residents between July 1, 2011, and July 1, 2012, a 9.3 percent increase.
Dickinson ranks third on the list of fastest-growing micro areas with a population increase of 1,624 people during the same period, a 6.5 percent increase, according to Census estimates.
A micropolitan area has a population between 10,000 and 50,000 people.
I guess that answers The Atlantic Monthly's question: is the Bakken boom over?

I assume cities with populations less than 10,000 are referred to as "nanopolitan" areas, not to be confused with "neapolitan" ice cream.

  2. MDU said the population of Watford City doubled in 5 years.

Amazing. Either MDU or I are out of touch.

    Well, OK, maybe both.

    and

This could stop all permits for everything, forever, if enforced with that goal in mind.

For example, what is the impact of a new cancer cure drug on global warming? Prove it!

    [This from the Nixon-Obama administration.]

"“It’s got us very freaked out,” said Ross Eisenberg, vice president of the National Association of Manufacturers..."

"projects could be tied up in lawsuits or administrative delays"

"Ambre Energy Ltd. is seeking a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers to build a coal-export facility at the Port of Morrow in Oregon. Under existing rules, officials weighing approval would consider whether ships in the port would foul the water or generate air pollution locally. The Environmental Protection Agency and activist groups say that review should be broadened to account for the greenhouse gases emitted when exported coal is burned in power plants in Asia."

    ...

"“The real danger is the delays,” said Eisenberg of the manufacturers’ group. “I don’t think the answer is ever going to be ‘no,’ but it can confound things.”"

[That is one naive dude. "No" will be the answer if it is the answer they want.]

Apparently the surplus attorneys will be employed. And legal fees will jump. Obama!

    1. Hopefully gasoline at $4.00 / gallon and rising will deter some of this craziness.

At some point, Congress will step in.

But yes, I have the same anxiety that others have.

    2. With regard to the population of Watford City, I recently posted the population of Watford City for 2000, 2010 (census) and now the estimated population (permanent and temporary). If anything MDU underestimated the growth. Perhaps MDU was only counting permanent residents.

  3. Watford.

I would believe up by 5 times in 2 years.

My guess is that he thinks of utility connections, which probably far understate population in this boom.

    But, he just sounded clueless.

Yes, if he read MDW, he would have seem photos and words and numbers. And even post office stories.

    1. Long time readers know my feelings about MDU; completely missed the Bakken Boom, right in their own backyard.

A very interesting story to say the least.

  5. By the time the government and the trial lawyers get done extracting from the productive, what percentage of the wealth do you think will be left? I'm sure the goal of the government and the trial lawyers is that there will be nothing left after all wealth should be controlled by them because they know how best to redistribute it. They call it economic justice.

The only ones that get a pass are the cronies of the power elites.

It is a scary world out there with that kind of mindset floating around.

    1. The good news: less than four more years.

A lot of smart folks in House of Representatives, and to some extent, the Senate, won't let this happen. Also, at some point, CEOs will have had enough.
