Samson Resources Three Forks Well Near Canadian Border -- The Williston Basin, North Dakota, USA

Samson Resources reported a nice well the other day. There were a number of surprises, not the least of which was the location, almost in Canada, north of Williston in Divide County, the Ambrose field:
  • 20837, 725, Samson Resources, Thomte 8-5-163-99H, Ambrose; t1/12; cum 67K 3/12;
Note other data points:
  • Samson Resources, North Williston Project developing the Mississippian Bakken and Devonian age Three Forks formations in Divide County.
  • Sanish/Three Forks; 6-foot TF interval; 30 stages; 2.4 million lbs sand;

Markers:
  • Upper Bakken: 7950
  • Middle Bakken: 7968
  • Lower Bakken: 8117
  • Does this suggest the middle Bakken is 149 feet thick here?
  • Three Forks: 8245
Again, note -- this well has produced 67,000 bbls in exactly 91 days, just three months. Also, it was interesting to see Samson Resources refer to this as a Sanish/Three Forks well on one of their forms.  The geologic foot markers are interesting: 150-ft thick middle Bakken this far north?

Samson Resources has another well in the immediate area that was just tested:
  • 20837, 267, Samson Resources, Skyline 4-9-163-99H, Ambrose; t 3/12; cum 2K; 30 stage. 2.4 million lbs sand; geologic report not yet posted.

  1. This was fascinating for those of us who have mineral rights on the Canadian border. Thanks!

    1. It completely surprised me. I came across it in a most unusual way. On the NDIC GIS map I noted four rigs actively drilling along the "high line" -- running east-to-west on the same line just a few miles south of the Canadian border are four wells, all close to each other, and four different operators: American Eagle, Crescent, SM, and Samson Resources, if I remember correctly. I was curious how another well in the immediate area had done, and stumbled upon this Samson Resources well.

    2. My family has mineral rights in Manitoba - the Daly Sinclair field. We were recently offered 75.00 per acre & 15% free of deduction. I was told this field targets the Bakken. Any thoughts?

    3. The folks over on the Teegus Bakken Shale Discussion Group have more experience with this type of question. There is a link at the sidebar on the right.

      I can't offer any advice: a) I don't follow Montana (I just don't have enough time); b) I don't own minerals, so I don't follow leasing closely; and, c) I never offer investment advice.

      But I wish you the best of luck.

  2. The Divide County border wells are heating up now mowing further West from The West Ambrose field to the Cougan Field . From American Eagle news: "Continuing the extension of American Eagle's development to the west and north, the Company has moved the Coplan 1-3 drilling rig approximately 1.5 miles to the west to a two-well pad. The Anton 3-4-163-101 ("Anton 3-4") is currently drilling in the horizontal section to the south to develop Sections 4 and 9 of T163N-101W. After drilling and casing the Anton 3-4, the rig is scheduled to immediately skid over to drill the Elizabeth 3-4N-163-101 well, which will be directed north into T164N-R101W and develop correctional Sections 28 and 33. These smaller correctional spacing units of approximately 780 acres along the US-Canadian border will require only about 6000 foot long laterals to develop compared to the 9300 foot long laterals
    drilled in the normal 1280 acre spacing units.
    Two wells in the Spyglass area operated by SM Energy, in which American Eagle owns significant working interests, were put on production in late June. The Adams 2-18H, in which American Eagle owns approximately 19% working interest, was stimulated in late May and was cleaned out and put on production in late June with a first week average production rate of more than 600 bopd. The Gulbranson 2-1H, in which American Eagle owns approximately 13% working interest, was also put on pump in late June with its first week of production averaging approximately 515 bopd. Additionally, American Eagle has elected to participate for its 14% working interest in the drilling of two infill wells to the Nomad 6-7-163-99 well operated by Samson Resources. The Nomad 6-7 well was completed this spring as one of the best wells in the area with an initial 30-day average oil rate of 912 bopd. These two infill wells are the first increased density wells operated by Samson in the area and follow the initial increased density drilling performed by SM Energy in the spacing unit directly to the south.
    American Eagle has received approval for increased well density of up to four wells per spacing unit in its currently approved spacing units in the Spyglass project. The Company plans to initiate infill drilling by the fourth quarter of the year."

    Samson Resources is currently drilling the first Nomad West Ambrose infill well:
