My Shrinking World -- January 22, 2023

According to the website, our floor plan, A6, has 919 square feet: described as one bedroom, one bath but, in fact, has an additional small den off the living room.

I can now spend 75% of my time in the apartment in the bedroom. The bedroom cannot be greater than 25% of the entire apartment which would make it 250 square feet but it seems much bigger, more like 20 x 20, or 400 square feet.

Tonight it was sublime in the bedroom. In my easy chair with hearty -- very hearty -- nachos, watching the Dallas football game on the "relatively" big screen and Hulu. Surrounded by books and with my MacBook Air, it was a wonderful night. We are lucky to have a huge bedroom that faces the DFW international airport.

The football game is over and I quickly transitioned to music -- first, Hulu music documentaries; later I will switch to YouTube, and then finally to Alexa / Amazon / Echo. 

The "internet" is quiet.

Will ChatGPT complement or threaten Wikipedia?

Right now, indications are such that ChatGPT will be significantly more authoritative (and useful?) than Wikipedia. 

OpenAI: 

OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory consisting of the for-profit corporation OpenAI LP and its parent company, the non-profit OpenAI Inc.

The company conducts research in the field of AI with the stated goal of promoting and developing friendly AI in a way that benefits humanity as a whole. [Going public and making money is not mutually exclusive for a company with a goal of promoting and developing friendly AI. Just saying. And look who is most closely aligned with OpenAI -- next few paragraphs].

The organization was founded in San Francisco in late 2015 by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others, who collectively pledged $1 billion USD.

Musk resigned from the board in 2018 but remained a donor.

In 2019, OpenAI LP received a US$1 billion investment from Microsoft. OpenAI is headquartered at the Pioneer Building in Mission District, San Francisco.

ChatGPT:

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer)is a chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022. It is built on top of OpenAI's GPT-3 family of large language models, and is fine-tuned (an approach to transfer learning[2]) with both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques

ChatGPT was launched as a prototype on November 30, 2022, and quickly garnered attention for its detailed responses and articulate answers across many domains of knowledge. Its uneven factual accuracy was identified as a significant drawback.
