The Kraken wells in Epping oil field have been completed/fracked and are now reporting production data.

Cricket

This gets a bit deep into the tentacles of the Bakken, but it was sent to me by a reader. I had mentioned something with regard to the Carus wells in the Bakken and that led us down another rabbit warren of corridors, this one to the wonderful state of Illinois and back to Killdeer, ND. It also led me down to another mixing of metaphors. LOL.

Just when I thought that was about the end of that story, the reader sent me this note: Cricket magazine was founded by Marianne Carus back in 1973, and currently published by the Open Court Publishing Company of La Salle, Illinois, now part of the Carus Publishing Company of Peru, Illinois.

The Apple Page

From The Dallas Morning News, December 29, 2019:
The iPad, the last major product from Apple cofounder Steve Jobs before he died i 2011, changed the definition of a computer, and today, it far outsells Apple's Mac laptops.
Its biggest fans are perhaps all under the age of 10, and the iPad and other tablets have become digital baby sitters.

Greece

On December 23, 2019, I posted this:
Quick, fill in the blank: " ______________________ (the country) has the world's strongest manufacturing sector, based on indexes of manufacturing activity.  Link here -- WSJ, December 22, 2019. A free one-year subscription to "themilliondollarway" to the first three readers who get the answer correct without going to the link.

This country is reporting the highest manufacturing performance of all countries tracked by data firm IHS Markit. See chart at the link. This country is ranked #1, followed by Colombia, Brazil, Myanmar, and then the United States, #5. Rounding out the top ten: China, France, Canada, Philippines, and India. Germany is at the bottom of the list, #29 of 30, behind Russia at #28. Japan is #20. Quite an interesting list. Countries ranked #19 and above are expanding; those below are contracting (Japan, UK, Indonesia, Mexico, and most of western Europe).
The answer: Greece!

Advantaged Oil -- BHP -- December 29, 2019

From Upstream, November 12, 2019, behind a paywall:
BHP said in its latest petroleum briefing it believes deep-water oil and "advantaged gas" within close proximity of existing infrastructure "can offer competitive returns for decades to come."
This article from Reuters, November 10, 2019, not behind a paywall, has the same content as the Upstream article, and both posted at almost the same time.

Prior to finding "advantaged" and BHP, the only connection with "advantaged" was BP that I could find.

And interestingly, there was a connection between BHP and BP this past year.

Volts, Colts, Bolts, And Dolts -- December 29, 2019

      Update

December 30, 2019: Tesla tumbles almost 5% -- but then again, the whole market is off today. Profit taking. From Bloomberg:
Tesla Inc. tumbled 4.9% Monday, its biggest drop in a month, after analysts at Cowen said vehicle deliveries may miss the company’s target this year as Model 3 demand slumps.
“Excluding the Netherlands and China, we expect Model 3 deliveries to be down” compared to the prior quarter and year-ago period, analyst Jeffrey Osborne wrote in a note dated Dec. 29. His estimate “highlights the demand saturation we are seeing across most mature markets as we shift from pent-up demand to steady flow demand.”
Tesla may deliver some 356,000 vehicles for this year, slightly below the company’s October target range of 360,000 to 400,000, he said.
At the same time, Cowen raised its fourth-quarter delivery estimate to 101,000 from 95,000 to reflect better expectations for the Netherlands and China. Osborne sees Tesla falling short of its Model S/X expectations, while his Model 3 forecast is roughly in line with consensus estimates.
From one analyst at the linked Bloomberg story:
“While Tesla has built a very dedicated fan base that has been willing to excuse poor build quality, customer service, and service infrastructure, we continue to be skeptical around broader adoption,” Osborne said. He rates the shares underperform with a price target of $210, implying a 51% decrease. Of the analysts tracked by Bloomberg, 15 analysts rate the shares the equivalent of a sell, while 11 rate it buy and 10 hold, with an average price target of $297.
      Original Post

I find the EV story fascinating. Can you think of any other sector that won't report its monthly, quarterly, yearly sales? BMW is now reporting EV sales only as a percentage decrease YoY. Say what?

From the best EV sales data site out there:
We'll be reporting 2019 Q4 EV Sales beginning Thursday, January 2 and/or Friday, January 3, and continuing throughout the following week. However, it's important to note that there will still be some missing data since many automakers refuse to report EV sales.
One wonders if this internet site can stay in business when the data is unavailable, unreliable, unverifiable.

Just after I wrote that, I read this at the site:
Important considerations going forward: At this point, it appears we won't have a reliable method for reporting monthly sales figures for many models.
While many are not models that make a huge impact on our monthly sales chart, but may in the future (i.e. Hyundai, Kia, Porsche, Subaru, Volvo), some do, like GM and Ford.
We're also learning that other sites are now estimating numbers from these automakers without exposing that and/or not sharing them at all.
With that said, we are moving to quarterly reporting as a whole. However, we'll still publish several articles each month showcasing data gleaned from automakers that do choose to report.
So, we'll have a number of articles about deliveries of each "chart-topping" EV.
While we really hate to move forward this way and have incompleted charts going forward, we have no choice at this point. Sadly, our chart has become almost purely based on estimated date (which was once supported by gleaned data, but would now be just based on pure guesses).
      Now, more from the site:
Note that BMW has decided for some time to no longer give model breakdowns or a final EV number, but rather a percentage decrease YoY, which has been huge in the last few months. But now, the automaker isn't even sharing its EV sales numbers/percentage at all. Still, i3 and i8 numbers will be official as reported by BMW.

While Mercedes is willing to provide IEV with a "total" number of plug-in vehicles sold for the month, the totals for each model are unverified by the automaker.

Many other automakers like Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Volvo, Porsche, and Jaguar don't reveal any EV sales figures.
Tesla reports its overall global deliveries every quarter, but that doesn't help with U.S. sales.
GM (Chevrolet and Cadillac) and Ford, among others, have chosen to just report on a quarterly basis, but again, there's often no breakdown of EV models delivered.

Toyota stopped reporting Prius Prime sales and has instead made the decision to just post overall Prius sales. Honda has never broken down Clarity sales either.

So, basically, we have a few EV sales numbers to add from the past few months and will have a few more after the end of the quarter. Aside from that, "You get nothing, you lose, good day, sir!"
I don't how to interpret this as anything but really, really bad news for the EV industry right now.

But to reiterate. Look at the note about BMW:
Note that BMW has decided for some time to no longer give model breakdowns or a final EV number, but rather a percentage decrease YoY, which has been huge in the last few months. But now, the automaker isn't even sharing its EV sales numbers/percentage at all. Still, i3 and i8 numbers will be official as reported by BMW
EVs remain a luxury segment (except for Volts, Colts, Bolts, Dolts, or whatever they are now called).

By the way, has anyone even seen any television advertising for any of these EVs? Search ev television commercials over at YouTube -- speaks volumes.

It will be interesting to see how publicly traded auto manufacturers will report their EV numbers.
      • India
      • China:
      • Europe:
        • this is the headline: industry analysts expect EV sales to soar in the UK and EU beginning in 2020
        • mostly due to mandates, tax breaks
        • already expensive, prices appear to be increasing

BLM Quarterly Lease Sales -- December, 2019, Sale

This is not the North Dakota quarterly lease sales. This is the BLM quarterly sales.

      From The Minot Daily News:
A Bismarck company was the highest bidder in the Bureau of Land Management Montana-Dakotas oil and gas lease sale held online December 18, 2019.
Cody Exploration LLC had a total bid of $50,377.50 for a 150.14-acre parcel in Williams County.
The BLM raised $191,912.50 in its quarterly oil and gas lease sale. Nearly 50 percent of the revenue from the sale will go to the states where the oil and gas activity occurs, in this case Montana and North Dakota, while the rest will go to the U.S. Treasury.
For this sale, BLM offered 20 parcels covering nearly 18,900 acres in Montana and North Dakota for oil and gas leasing through the competitive online auction. There were 23 registered bidders. Fourteen parcels received bids.
The BLM generated a record $1.1 billion from 28 oil and gas lease sales in fiscal year 2018.
I didn't think there was much BLM land in Williams County; this might have been along the ND/Montana state line where there is a bit of BLM land.

      So, the Cody Exploration bid:
      • $50,378 / 150 acres = $335 / acre in Williams County
Not all of the 18,900 acres received bids. So, we can't get a good figure for bonus per acre paid overall, but, let's do this:
      • 20,000 acres / 20 parcels = 1,000 acres/parcel
      • 14 parcels received bids; let's assume 14,000 acres
      • $191,912 / 14,000 acres = $13/acre which seems about right based on North Dakota's quarterly lease sales
Cody Exploration has rarely been mentioned on the blog in the past.

US Crude Oil Exports -- Argus Media -- December 29, 2019

US crude export chronicles, December, 2019, Argus Media

Last month we devoted the entire blog to the Port of Corpus Christi and its emergence as a key outlet for US crude exports. Why? Some big new pipelines — including Cactus 2 and Epic — started service to that port.

A summary of subjects that monthly blog will cover:
      • US record exports: a record high of 3.4 million bopd in October; that number will continue to climb
        • the latest major pipeline from the Permian to Corpus Christi: Phillip 66's 900,000 bopd Gray Oak pipeline did not start service until late November
        • Gray Oak will also have destinations near Houston when it goes into full service in 1Q20 (next quarter)
        • Epic has loaded an Aframax-sized vessel with crude at its converted dock on the Inner Harbor of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel
        • Epic repurposed the former grain facility to export crude oil while a larger export terminal is under construction; will be in service 3Q20
      • first sign of consolidation? Enbridge is joining Enterprise's project to develope a VLCC terminal off Freeport, TX; SPOT;
        • Enbridge is also part of a competing project with Oiltanking with another memorable name: Texas COLT -- short for Texas Crude Offshore Loading Terminal
      • Export surprises
        • not only did US set many records for US crude exports in October, but monthly shipments also hit records to six individual countries:
        • France: exports from US to France nearly tripled from September, 215,000 bopd; France is now the sixth top importer of US crude as refiners like XOM, UK-Chinese joint venture Petrolneo doubled down on WTI and Bakken liftings to the Fos-Lavera port complex
        • Australia: becomes the seventh top US destination for crude; BP's 146,000 bopd Kwinana refinery, just started purchasing US crude earlier this year
        • Peru: 85,000 bopd; for the first time, imported oil from the US; indicating that Peru is displacing pricier west African crude with more regional grades, such as WTI or Light Louisiana Sweet (LLS)
        • and get this, small European (sic) nations like Denmark, Israel, and Belgium opted for US crude instead of North Sea options and more economic price levels at the US Gulf coast
Note: location is taking a back-seat to quality and type of oil. Note that Russia is not mentioned in connection with France, Denmark, and Belgium -- all so much closer to Russia than to the US.

Big oil: looks ready to have its day in US shale. Financial Times. Paywall. Nothing new. Oil companies with deep pockets and/or access to capital will do well in 2020. Otherwise, look out below.
