Notes From All Over -- Part 2 -- June 30, 2019

One of the "big stories" I used to follow was the "energy debacle" in Europe. I follow the story once in awhile now, but not as much any more.

Don sent me a great article -- which I would have missed -- that really spells it out. Interesting read.

From zerohedge. I don't see this as imperialism or a "battle" -- it's just free-market capitalism and making choices. I would stay away from the opining and editorializing and just pay attention to the "facts," statistics, etc.

From the linked article:
One of the most important energy battles of the future will be fought in the field of liquid natural gas (LNG).Suggested as one of the main solutions to pollution, LNG offers the possibility of still managing to meet a country’s industrial needs while ameliorating environmental concerns caused by other energy sources. At the same time, a little like the US dollar, LNG is becoming a tool Washington intends to use against Moscow at the expense of Washington’s European allies.

Human Interest Story -- June 30, 2019

Link here to The Dickinson Press.

Hopefully folks won't run into a paywall, it's a great story.

Military

100%, without question, if a high school student has no idea whatsoever what he or she wants to do, I always suggest looking into the military. It is absolutely incredible what the military offers.

Three vignettes.

The linked story at The Dickinson Press is of a Native American female who enlisted at the age of 17. Because she was not yet of legal age, her mother had to sign for her. Upon enlistment, she takes a test; qualifies to become a medic, i.e., an enlisted "Radar" or "Klinger" you might see on M*A*S*H. Twenty years later she is a physician in the National Guard with real-world experiences.

Our son-in-law, similar story. Enlisted in the US Navy at age 17. His mother had to sign for him for the same reason for him to enlist. He tests and scores high enough to teach nuclear weapon courses to incoming engineering officers. After a couple of years, he boot-straps himself into an ROTC engineering course at the University of Arizona. He returns to active duty officer as a nuclear submariner and after 15 years in that role, one step from commanding his own submarine, he applies to and gets accept to Harvard Business School. He is now chief information officer / chief operating officer for a Fortune 500 company based out of London. And it all started at age 17, taking a qualifying exam in the military.

For me, I was in the process of applying for my advanced degree when my mother sent me a notice that the military was offering scholarships (or "full rides") in return for four years of service. I applied, was accepted, and enjoyed it so much, I stayed 30 years and a day.

MRO's Bill Connolly In Bailey Oil Field -- Re-Fracked; New Production 40X Greater After Re-Frack -- June 30, 2019

For newbies: MRO has an aggressive re-frack program in the Bailey oil field. Here is another example.

The well:
  • 16736, 377, MRO, Bill Connolly 21-25H, Bailey, t1/108; cum 262K 4/19;
Previous post:
May 13, 2019: #16736, huge jump in production but only 5 days of production; in area of a lot of new fracking; need to check up on production over three or four full months. Re-fracked, 2/22/19 - 3/9/19; 6 million gallons of water; 90% water in the injection;

So, note that the 26-day production of 29,475 bbls extrapolates to 34,010 bbls/30-day month.

How did this well do at the original frack?

So, for the cost of mediocre re-frack, MRO got a huge "new" well.

Enerplus Danks Well In Antelope Oil Field Coming Back On Line? -- June 30, 2019

Random update of two wells in section 17-151-94. Both wells are on 320-acre spacing. One is on the W/2 of the section (320 acres); the other is in the E/2 of the section (20 acres). The EOG well remains off line; the Enerplus well is back on line but not clear how this well will play out. Note in the production profile below, the Danks well produced around 5,000 bbls of oil in one day on two different occasions: once in 4/19; and once in 5/19; will continue to follow.

May 19, 2019: on 320-acre spacing; these are the only two wells in section 17-151-94; they both went inactive 1/19; remain inactive 3/19:
  • 20307, in the west half, IA/1,328, EOG, Clarks Creek 103-17H, Antelope, Sanish pool, t11/11; cum 153K 12/18; only 1,000 bbls/month; off line as of 1/19; still inactive, 3/19; remains inactive as of 5/19;
  • 19693, in the east half, 722, Enerplus, Danks 17-44H, Antelope, Sanish pool, t7/11; cum 234K 12/18; only 1,000 bbls/month; off line as of 1/19; still inactive, 3/19; active as of 4/19;

XTO Nelson Federal Wells In Antelope Oil Field Back On Line -- June 30, 2019

The XTO Nelson Federal wells are now coming back on line. Earlier, all of these wells were IA, but now four  of them are back to active status and the rest will probably be on active status next month (5/19) -- remember, paperwork generally lags two months from what is going on in the field, so I assume all these wells are now back on line and producing:

Notes From All Over -- Part 1 -- June 30, 2019

Unless I missed it, and I'm sure I did, the G-20 had little to say about global warming. Just saying. They all wanted more fossil fuel from Iran.

Off The Net For Awhile

Yeah, that's me.

It was just getting a bit dark and I was out a bit too far for a great picture but it will do.

Hess Reports Two Record-Setting Wells In The Bakken -- June 29, 2019

See this post to compare 30-day IPs.

**************************************************
From Hart Energy:
Hess Corp has produced a record-breaking 24-hour test well this month (OilPatch Hotline, May 2, 2019) in McKenzie County, N.D., surpassing all records for U.S. land wells, according to an article in the website of the Oil Patch Hotline, an oil and gas trade publication for the Williston Basin.
“This was a barn burner,” said Hotline Publisher Dennis Blank. “The highest IP tests recorded before this on new horizontal Bakken wells were in the range of 3,000 to 4,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.”
Hess said the AN-Bohmbach-153-94-2734H set a new record 24-hour IP at 14,662 boe/d. The well produced 10,169 barrels of crude oil and 26,960 Mcf of natural gas and is located in Sec. 22, T153N-R94W. This new record breaker followed an earlier April 5 record of 10,626 boe/d on a companion horizontal well in the same pad.
The Hart Energy article does not specify exactly which AN-Bohmbach well this is.

The Oil Patch Hotline article did not specify the permit number either.

The well was first reported at the blog on June 5, 2019, but at the time, the IP had not been released.

At the Oil Patch Hotline link:
The well was a test to better understand open flow potential and what completion practices the company wants to do in different parts of the field. The current standard design is 36 stages with 280 entry points on the hydraulic fracturing.
Let's try to sort this out. These are the five AN-Bohmbach wells on the pad in the Antelope-Sanish oil field, all targeting the same formation, "Bakken/Sanish":
  • 35091, 3,237, Hess, AN-Bohmbach ... H-10, t5/19; cum 139K 1/20; 35 stages; 5 million lbs sand, no ceramic;
  • 35092, 3,019, Hess, AN-Bohmbach ... H-9, t4/19; cum 103K 1/20; 83MM; 35 stages; 10 million lbs sand;
  • 35093, 10,626, Hess, AN-Bohmbach ... H-8, t4/19; cum 68,402 bbls oil over 24 days;  131,590 mcf over 24 days; 35 stages; 10 million lbs sand; cum 144K over first three months; cum 251K 1/20;
  • 35094, 2,578, Hess, AN-Bohmbach ... H-7, t4/19; cum 12,890 oil over 10 days; 23,297 mcf over 0 days; 40 stages; 5 million lbs sand; cum 71K over 59 days; cum 151K 1/20;
  • 35095, 3,807, Hess, AN-Bohmbach ... H-6, t4/19; cum 200K 1/20; natural gas as of 6/19: cum 148,584K cubic feet (25K boe);
Extrapolating crude oil production to 30 days based on initial production:
  • #35091: 30,000 bbls of oil;
  • #35092: 31,615 bbls of oil;
  • #35093: 85,502 bbls of oil;
  • #35094: 38,670 bbls of oil;
  • #35095: 52,000 bbls of oil; 25,890 bbls in first 14 days;
Now to sort this out.

The linked sources said the 24-hour IP for the record setting well (#35059?) was:
  • oil: 10,169 (not seen in any of the numbers above)
  • mcf: 26,960 mcf (not seen in any of the number above)
  • boe: 14,662
    • working backwards:
    • 14,662 - 10,169 = 4,493
    • 26,960,000/4,493 = 6000.445 (conversion factor)
Therefore, the "record" well had to have been #35095 which [was] SI/NC [at the time of the original post. It is now in production. See above.]

Interestingly enough, the linked articles said the previous "record-setting" well had a 24-hour IP of 10,626 boe. #35093 had an IP of 10,626 for oil (BO) but not boe. Checking the file report at the NDIC website confirms that #35093 had a 24-hour IP of:
  • oil: 10,626
  • mcf: 27,577 = 4,595.825
  • boe: 15,221.826
So, anyway, that's where it stands now (in my mind). We'll have to wait to see the reported numbers for #35059.

Disclaimer: I often make simple errors in arithmetic.

Disclaimer: I often misread things.

The biggest takeaway for me: the small number of stages and the relatively small amount of proppant used. Five million lbs is very, very small (in the Bakken, but compared to what they are using in the Permian, incredibly small); ten million lbs is on the high side and I don't expect to see this often in the Bakken with WTI below $75. If WTI goes over $75, we will start to see increased amounts of propane being used.

Other links for the AN-Bohmbach wells:
A huge, huge "thanks" to the reader who alerted me to the original AN-Bohmbach story back on May 30, 2019. Just think: readers saw this story as early as May 30, 2019, because of that reader. Otherwise we would have had to wait until this week -- almost a month later -- to have seen the story.

Wow, I love the Bakken.

Disclaimer: I am inappropriately exuberant about the Bakken.

Note: only one rig was involved in drilling this well (not counting the "spud" rigs). And to the best of my knowledge no migratory birds or sage grouse were injured while these wells were being drilled.

Some production data.
