Enbridge Eyes Mainline Expansion; What Some Of Us Will Be Talking About Wednesday -- September 30, 2014

Enbridge eyes Mainline expansion. Rigzone is reporting:
Enbridge Inc, Canada's largest pipeline operator, said on Tuesday it may have to build new pipeline capacity from its Superior, Wisconsin, storage hub if oil shipments from Canada and the Bakken shale field of North Dakota keep expanding.
Enbridge could handle up to 500,000 more barrels per day (bpd) on its 2.5 million bpd system once it completes rebuilding its Line 3 pipeline from Alberta to Superior and finishes its Sandpiper pipeline serving the Bakken in 2017.
Canada currently produces about 3.5 million barrels per day and ships nearly 3 million to the United States. According to industry forecasts, Canada's production will rise to nearly 5 million bpd by 2020.
If growth in Canada or North Dakota is stronger than anticipated, Enbridge said it can accommodate the increased flows on its mainline system, which handles the lion's share of Canadian exports.
"If volumes available to the Mainline turn out to be stronger than anticipated, there's a potential for growth on our system of in excess of 500,000 barrels per day," Jarvis said.
To reach that capacity, the Sandpiper project from the Bakken oil field in North Dakota to the Mainline could be expanded by up to 160,000 bpd, while Line 3, which starts in Edmonton, Alberta, will have unused capacity into Superior of 370,000 bpd.
From Enbridge webpage, the company's Mainline:
The Mainline Enhancement Project is designed to expand access to refinery markets in the U.S. Midwest and beyond for growing production from western Canada by adding pumping capacity to Enbridge’s Alberta Clipper pipeline, also known as Line 67.
In Canada, the Alberta Clipper (Line 67) is an existing Enbridge 914 mm (36 inch) pipeline with a current capacity of 450,000 bopd. Enbridge has applied to the National Energy Board to expand Alberta Clipper’s transmission capacity to 570,000 bopd through additions and modifications to existing facilities.
Based on its design, Line 67 is intended to expand up to 800,000 bpd with additional pumping capacity in future.
Subject to the required regulatory approvals, the first phase of the Mainline Enhancement Project that increases capacity to 570,000 bpd will be in-service in mid-2014.

Oh-Oh

This could be the big story: Federal judge rules that President Obama cannot provide subsidies for those signing up for ObamaCare through the federal exchange. At least that's what I think the judge said. I assume one of two things will happen: a) the Supreme Court takes the case; or, b) the Supreme Court does not take the case and ... like a house of cards ...

More cable companies take "TV" off menu. Won't be missed.

Oil companies and railroads push-back on CBR proposals. [Rigzone also has the story: industry wants seven (7) years to retro-fit/replace tank cars.]

Big story, previously reported: US oil exports climb.

A Chinese fracking bet goes wrong. The Bakken shale formation has revolutionized North America's energy industry. But an early Chinese private-equity bet into Canad'sside of the oil field has little to show for its investment.

Magnum Hunter Sells Non-Core Assets In Divide County For $8,000/Acre -- September 30, 2014

Magnum Hunter subsidiary announces sale of certain non-core assets located in Divide County, North Dakota for ~$23.05 mln in cash: Co announced that Bakken Hunter, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the co, closed on the sale of certain non-core and non-operated working interests in oil and gas properties located in Divide County, North Dakota to a privately held company affiliated with Formation Energy L.P.
  • The sales price of the Properties was $23,051,320 in cash, after taking into account customary purchase price adjustments, and was received by Magnum Hunter from this sale today.
  • The Properties currently account for ~170 BOE of average daily production, net to the ownership interest sold to the buyer, and consist of a non-operated working interest in ~34,600 gross (2,852 net) leasehold acres.
$23 million / 2,852 acres = $8,000/acre.

I can only imagine the negotiations when they got down to $23,051,315 and Magnum Hunter said -- $23,051,320 -- and buyer said, "Sold!"

What Does "LL" Stand For In A Bakken Well Name?

This is really cool.

We all  know what "ULW" means -- thanks to a reader who answered the question for us.

Now, what does "LL" mean?
  • 27702, conf, QEP, Otis 28-29-32-33LL, Grail,
This is a well on a 1280-acre spacing unit: E/2 sections 29 & 32, and W/2 sections 28 and 33.  So this well will "straddle" the section line / spacing line between sections 28/29 and 32/33. So "LL" tells me that this is a well that will be drilling an "overlapping 1280-acre spacing unit."

Different operators have different ways of naming their wells; this is how QEP is doing it.

By the way, even though this well is still on confidential status, it is reporting great production:

The Oasis Hardy Well In Cottonwood Field -- September 30, 2014

Over at the discussion group the question was raised why the Hardy well in Cottonwood field has a valve set (Christmas tree) and a flare, and yet the well is shown to still be on DRL status. If the well has been fracked/tested, it's possible the paperwork has simply not caught up with the folks in Bismarck.

Be that as it may, a reader sent three photos of the pad. Although it doesn't show it on the GIS map yet, apparently the pad is built for four horizontals going north (Hardy wells) and four horizontals going south (Polly wells).

The pad does not look like one of the better pads I've seen in the Bakken. This pad does not seem to measure up to the high standards most operators work at in the Bakken. Interesting.

In the background there appears to be another rig, but for the life of me, I can't locate a well within walking distance from this well on the GIS server map.

I see Microsoft is going to Windows 10, skipping Windows 9.

I assume this is more marketing than anything. Apple went to MacOS X some time ago -- like 12 years ago.

It seems Microsoft should have leapfrogged to Windows one-one.

Update On Zavanna Wells East Of Williston -- September 30, 2014

This is really cool. About a week ago a Zavanna well caught my attention; I was going to do a stand-alone post on Zavanna because they've been quiet for so long. Then I forgot all about it, and a quick search of my website, I couldn't find what caught my attention (but after a week, there could be close to a 100 new posts so easily lost).

A reader just sent me a note suggesting I keep an eye on the Zavanna wells east of Williston:
Keep an eye on Zavanna's Sylvester, Beagle, Husky, and Bear Cat wells just northeast of Williston.

They are currently fracking 13 new wells in those 2 spacing units.

Their original Bear Cat well (24543) has produced 200K bbls of oil in its first 13 months of production (started producing April '13 but has been offline for about 3 months due to the nearby drilling/fracking).  It's still been producing 10K bbls per month.
The reader provided additional information but I don't know how "sensitive" it is, so I won't post it for now.  It has to do with frack design and we will see that information when the wells come off confidential list and/or the data is posted at the NDIC site.

I was going to do a stand-alone post on Zavanna, but had forgotten until I got that note. What a great reminder, simply serendipity.

The area under discussion is (north)east of Williston in the Springbrook and Williston oil fields. The wells are about 3 - 4 miles east of the bridge going over the Little Muddy River east of Williston, and then about 3 - 4 miles north:

One has to chuckle. I called this last well an "early well." Yes, it's really an old well, drilled back in 2012. Ha.

By the way, the Muddy River Boys would have been in this very area, the area of the Zavanna wells in Springbrook oil field, section 32-155-100, on their way up to the four-mile bridge. Or was it the nine-mile bridge. Have to check that when I get home. From an earlier post:
Coincidentally, my sister gave me a book that she had forgotten to give me 18 months earlier. A reader of the blog sent me a copy of The Muddy River Boys. Also at Amazon.com. Interestingly enough, someone actually mentioned it to me sometime ago, and I had forgotten all about it. At the link, look at the first comment. It's a must-read for those with nostalgic memories of North Dakota back in 1930 - 1960. The book covers the period, generally, from 1944 - 1948. If I recall, very little mention, if any, was made of WWII.

The Big Picture; Saudi Vs US Petroleum Product Production -- September 30, 2014

For those interested in the "big picture" with regard to global oil production, you really have to look at the Mark Perry graph at this post (no longer available). Here is another link: https://www.uschamber.com/blog/shale-boom-makes-united-states-world-s-top-petroleum-producer with screen shot below.

Again, some of us see so many graphs day in and day out, our eyes glaze over when we see yet another graph. But take a look at that graph: it is quite stunning.

Between 2010 and 2013, both the "red" line and the "blue" line were increasing significantly. The western economy wasn't doing all that great during that period so one assumes the production increase was a reflection of the economic activity in China and/or the loss of production of petroleum products elsewhere (Libya, Iraq, Nigeria, Russia, etc) and Saudi and the US were making up the difference.

The second thing one notices that Saudi production is once again leveling off or dropping back to its 2011 production numbers. Compared to 2006, there has now been a 4.8 million bopd swing between the US and Saudi Arabia; and where the gap in 2006 was starting to narrow, all indications are the gap that we now see (in 2014, 2.4 million bopd) will continue to widen.

Why Are Not All Wells Put On The Confidential List In North Dakota? -- September 30, 2014

There was an e-mail discussion among a couple of us regarding an issue that has always perplexed me but not a big enough deal to really blog about ... until someone else noticed it and asked the question.

The post below is from my e-mail to a couple of other folks (all my stuff; no one else's -- so anything wrong is all my fault). It may or may not make sense to anyone else and it certainly isn't ready for "prime time" but it is what it is.

Here goes.

Why are not all wells put on the confidential list?

A writer sent in that question when he noted that the four (4) most recent KOG wells were reported way ahead of schedule (before the six months were up) and it turned out these wells were never on the confidential list.

I've always known a "few" wells were not on the confidential list, but never worried about it. This got me wondering. It turns out that up to 70% of permits/wells may not be getting placed on the confidential list. That means that of the 2,200 wells on the confidential list, there could be as many 3,500 or so locations being drilled or waiting to be drilled in the Williston Basin, North Dakota.

That makes sense because I've always thought based on # of permits issued/year divided by 12 months suggests that 200 - 210 wells should be reported each month; but yet it looks like about 160 - 175 wells actually "come off the confidential list."

The other wells are mixed in with the group of "producing wells that have been completed" that are also reported most days on the daily activity report. That group includes wells that were confidential and went to DRL status, and it also includes wells that were never on the confidential list.

Here was my answer to the individual who asked about wells not being placed on confidential list:

Two issues: a) how many permits are not put on confidential status; and, b) why?

1. One cannot simply go to the confidential list and assume the missing permit numbers were not put on the confidential list; some may have been on the confidential list and already reported and thus have come off.

However, if you take the most recent permits one can assume they have not been drilled yet.

So, I took the most recent 140 permits, and then plugged in / counted all the missing permit numbers. There were 99 permits "missing." The total came to 239 permits (140 + 99). It appears that 99 permits in this batch were not accounted for.

99/140 = 70.71%.

That means it is likely that as many as 70% of permits/wells are not on the confidential list at the time the application goes in. Of course, any point along the way, the operator can request the well be put on the confidential list.

2. It would be easier to request "confidential" at the time the application is filled out; there's a box in the upper right corner of the application -- form H1 --  requesting/not requesting confidentiality. The operator simply types in "yes" or "no."

So, the question is why would an operator not request "confidentiality." It does not cost anything; no additional fee, as far as I know. If there is, it would be nominal.

3. I think this is the answer. The state wants the industry to be as transparent as possible. The state would prefer nothing be confidential, but of course, that isn't going to happen. So, the state and the oil companies work together, come up with a compromise and agree that "confidentiality" is not just automatic.

There has to be a reason for granting confidentiality. You notice on the daily activity report that there is often a list of permits in which the state authorizes confidentiality.

My hunch is that the state does not automatically grant confidentiality. If an operator wants a well to be confidential, the state has to see a valid reason. Once you start getting to 26 wells in one section, and results of wells in that section and the surrounding sections are well known, it's hard to see the need for confidentiality. As it is, the state seems very, very liberal in granting "confidentiality."

4. But why don't the companies simply check "YES" anyway in the box? I think the risk is that it will slow down the process. If the company checks "YES" the permit won't be granted until the state has a chance to determine the need. Obviously if the permit is for a wildcat, no problem, or for a new formation. But if this is the 26th well in a given oil field, or even in the a given section, the state could really require a lot of paperwork explaining why the operator wants the well to be confidential.

*******************************

I don't want to be a dead horse, but with receipt of most recent comment (that most operators wait until the last possible moment to request confidentiality, let's look at the most recent 100 or so permits (as of September 29, 2014, yesterday, and then we can follow them longitudinally (Jane Smith has a much better database and confirms much of what was said up above):

105 wells
  • 3: already on DRL status; unlikely they were ever confidential; DRL status means you can see the file
  • 34: loc; did not request confidential status with permit
  • 68: requested confidential status with permit
1. The first thing I note is that most operators/more wells are put on confidential list with the application; the operators are NOT waiting to the last minute before they want to "hide" something

2. Very, very well-known fields; some of the very well-known operators don't ask to put the wells on confidential at the time of the application; the field is already well-known; it will be interesting to see if these wells ever go to CONF

3. I was only surprised by the Liberty Resources wells in McGregor not put on CONF; later I will take a look at the GIS map server to see if there is an easy explanation

4. In the big scheme of things, it seems rare for operators at this point in the Bakken not to put their wells on confidential status at the time of the application. Only after we follow these wells for awhile will we get a sense how rare it is for any well never to be on CONF status.

Alaska Crude Oil Being Exported To South Korea; First Oil Export From Alaska In A Decade -- September 30, 2014

  • A ConocoPhillips tanker ship full of crude oil is on its way to South Korea from Alaska, the first oil export from Alaska in a decade.
  • Alaskan oil exports are a sign that domestic demand for the state's crude is drying up as production rises in the continental U.S.
  • The U.S. has had a 39-year ban in place barring the export of domestic oil, but exports from Alaska are one of the few exceptions; still, the last time oil was exported from the state was in 2004.
  • COP says future shipments would hinge on market conditions and tanker availability.
This is a great example of one of the "loopholes" or exceptions in the US ban on exporting crude oil

The Road To New England Is Becoming Less Traveled

The Washington Examiner is reporting:
The Northeast, once the nation’s political engine that produced presidents, House speakers and Senate giants including the late Edward M. Kennedy, is losing clout in Washington as citizens flee the high-tax region, according to experts worried about the trend.
The Census Bureau reports that population growth has shifted to the South and the result is that the 11 states that make up the Northeast are being bled dry of representation in Washington.
Critics blame rising taxes in states such as Massachusetts and Connecticut for limiting population growth in the Northeast to just 15 percent from 1983 to 2013, while the rest of the nation grew more than 41 percent.
The biggest impact comes in the loss of congressional representation.
Deep in a recent report, for example, the American Legislative Exchange Council tabulated how the drop in population relative to the rest of the nation cut the region’s power in Washington. While the states from Pennsylvania to Maine had 141 House members in 1950, they are down to 85 today, a drop of some 40 percent.
California and Texas combined have more House representatives.
In addition to high taxes, those remaining behind can expect to pay ever-increasing utility bills due to a) dumb decisions in the past; and, b) dumber decisions to come (Elizabeth Warren assures us of that). A hop, skip, and a jump from the Marcellus/Utica, and "they" don't want natural gas. Go figure.

Update On That SHD Thud Well And SHD In General -- September 30, 2014

This is really quite a story, at least from very little I know. Folks can read about SHD here, and here, what little has been posted.

SHD has eleven (11) permits/wells (as of September 30, 2014). Eight of them are in section 36-151-95, Clarks Creek. The other three are in sections 30/31-150-90, Deep Water Creek Bay, McLean County.

In the Deep Water Creek Bay, two are still on the confidential list; one has been producing since 2010:
  • 18316, 1,197, SHD, Simba 24-30H, 2 sections, middle Bakken, 22 stages (15 sliding sleeves, 7 composite bridge plugs), 2.8 million lbs sand; 39 days to TD; logged samples were saved to be archived by Spotted Hawk Development in McLean, VA; the North Dakota Geological Survey core library in Grand Forks, ND; and, the Tribal Council. Gas ranged between 2,200 - 3,500 units with 4,800 - 5,500 units records; a flare was lit immediately upon entry into the upper Middle Bakken at 10,100 feet MD. The geologist felt this would be "an average to above average well."
Of the eight wells in section 36-151-95, Clarks Creek, one has come off the confidential list:
  • 27040, 2,082, SHD, Thud 12-36H, Clarks Creek, one section, Three Forks B1, 20 stages; 3.7 million lbs sand, t6/14; cum 39K 7/14;
