Rambling Notes On A Saturday Night Filled With Sports -- September 11, 2021

I could not possibly be in a better mood. Watching the lead into the Mets - Yankees game tonight, and then this, the graphic below. I don't even care what wells these are; who the operator is; just looking at all these wells in an area barely onepointfivemile east-to-west and zeropointfivemile north-to-south is just amazing. Can you imagine the mom-and-pop team that owns minerals in this drilling unit?

Mets-Yankees on one network; NASCAR Cup series on another. Any number of college football games today.

Meanwhile, here, potatoes, steak, chicken grilling -- wow, what a great country.

Covid-19:  this is going to be interesting to watch. We're averaging about 900,000 immunizations daily. I'm curious to see what the number is about two months from now when the "Biden executive order" goes into force. There will be a lot of lawsuits; not sure if the "Biden executive" order on vaccines will make a difference in the average number of vaccinations given each day but it will be fascinating to watch.

I do think the football stadiums full of unmasked fans is really, really nice to see. Years from now it will be interesting to compare "Spanish Flu" of 1918 - 1920 with Covid-19 of 2020 - 2022 and see which pandemic "turned out better."

Sophia fell asleep; the lake was that smooth tonight.

Random 9/11 Comment -- Looking Back Twenty Years -- September 11, 2021

I don't know what network it's on, but the lead-in to the Mets - Yankees game was incredible.

It reminded me how much I miss George Bush II.

The game. I'm not watching it but checking in on it every so often.

At the middle of the second inning, the Yankees were clobbering the Mets, the former leading 5 - 0.

I came back to look at the score and here it is, the bottom of the sixth, Mets are still at bat, and surprise, surprise, the Mets are ahead 6 - 5. Looks like it's going to be a great finish.

Notes From All Over -- September 11, 2021

NASCAR today: 1:30 p.m. CT and 6:30 p.m. CT. Richmond, VA. Second of first three for the top sixteen. Schedule here.

UND lost to Utah. But an incredibly great game. Only watched the first half.

Upset: #12 Oregon soundly defeats #3 Ohio State.

Covid is so over: Jack Trice Stadium, third largest stadium in Big 12 Conference with capacity of 61,500. Stands jam-packed. No masks anywhere. Of course, everyone is vaxxed.

Olivia: in addition to everything else she does, including playing on three different soccer teams (one high school varsity team; two FC Dallas "club" teams), she applied for and was accepted as a referee for city recreation games for players under then age of twelve. She is paid $24 / hour. She says that beats fast food where her friends work which includes cleaning rest rooms. She does not have to clean rest rooms as par to her refereeing. [Note: Olivia is our fifteen-year-old "middle" granddaughter.]

9-11: Resident Biden celebrates the 20th anniversary with taped message on success of the Afghanistan mission.

Male infertility: not a known side-effect of ivermectin, according to US health officials. Well, good. Glad we got that one cleared up. Link here. Not that I was worried, but could you imagine, not only does ivermectin kill worms and Covid-19; it could have been the first male contraception pill, a spermicide. It would been a miracle drug. Especially if it was also shown to lower cholesterol.

304: quick! What's the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel? Answer here

Energy and Logistics

India: August gasoline demand holds above pre-Covid level. Link to ArgusMedia. This is not trivial.

GoM: oil still shut in; worse than Katrina at same point in time. Link here.

Cargo backlog worsens. Link here

Ovintiv: joins the parade. Announced increasing shareholder returns with new capital allocation fremwork. Link here. From the CEO:

"Over the next 10 years, our business is set to generate about $15 billion of free cash flow(1) at $55 per barrel WTI flat oil pricing and would generate about $21 billion at $65 per barrel. Our capital allocation framework sets out our commitment to financial strength, generating superior returns on the capital we invest, returning cash to our shareholders, and driving ESG progress."
Beginning in the fourth quarter of 2021, and until Ovintiv reaches its $3 billion net debt(2) target, the company plans to return 25% of the previous quarter's free cash flow after base dividends to its shareholders through share buybacks and/or variable dividends. The remaining 75% will primarily be allocated to net debt reduction, with a modest amount allocated to small, low-cost property bolt-ons.

In 2022, using commodity price assumptions of $60 per bbl for WTI oil and $3.00 per Mcf for NYMEX natural gas, the Company anticipates that it will deliver approximately $550 million of direct shareholder returns through its $150 million base dividend and an additional $400 million in share buybacks or variable dividends. This cash return would represent a cash yield of more than seven percent.

Once the Company reaches its net debt target of $3 billion, it plans to increase quarterly shareholder returns to at least 50% of the previous quarter's free cash flow after base dividends.

US Military

With the huge US Army sandbox closed, we now turn to the US Navy, perhaps the real winner with the end of the Afghanistan war.

Mideast DRONE task force: link here. This is pretty cool if you think about it. A lot of young enlisted men and women "playing" video games for real. LOL.

USS Coronado: wiki here. To be decommissioned in FY2022, link here. To summarize, the U.S. Navy plans to decommission fifteen ships and to acquire eight manned ships in FY 2022. The unmanned vessels fleet should also grow significantly

US Navy launches first flight III guided missile destroyer, the future Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125): text from navsea.navy.mil:

PASCAGOULA, Miss. – The first DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer to be built in the Flight III configuration, the future Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125), was successfully launched at Huntington Ingalls Industries, Ingalls Shipbuilding division, June 4.

The DDG 51 Flight III upgrade is centered on the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar and incorporates upgrades to the electrical power and cooling capacity plus additional associated changes to provide greatly enhanced warfighting capability to the fleet. The Flight III baseline begins with DDGs 125-126 and will continue with DDG 128 and follow on ships.

“Flight III ships will provide cutting edge Integrated Air and Missile Defense capability to include significantly greater detection range and tracking capacity. Launching the first Flight III ship, the future Jack H. Lucas, is another important step to delivering Flight III to the Navy” said DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class Program Manager, Capt. Seth Miller.

The DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG 51) is a multi-mission guided missile destroyer designed to operate offensively and defensively, independently, or as units of Carrier Strike Groups, Expeditionary Strike Groups, and Surface Action Groups in multi-threat environments that include air, surface and subsurface threats. These ships will respond to Low Intensity Conflict/Coastal and Littoral Offshore Warfare scenarios, as well as open ocean conflict, providing or augmenting power projection, forward presence requirements and escort operations at sea. Flight III is the fourth Flight upgrade in the 30+ year history of the class, building on the proud legacy of Flight I, II and IIA ships before it.

HII is currently constructing four other DDG 51 class ships, including the future Frank E. Petersen Jr. (DDG 121) and Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG 123) in the Flight IIA configuration, and the future Ted Stevens (DDG 128) and Jeremiah Denton (DDG 129) as Flight III ships. There are a total of 20 DDG 51 class ships under contract at both new construction shipyards.

Jacklyn Harold "Jack" Lucas, 1928 - 2008, white privilege:  an American Marine in WWII who as awarded the Medal of Honor at the age of 17 years as a private first class in the US Marine Corps during the Battle of Iwo Jima. From wiki, again white privilege:

During a close firefight in two trenches between Lucas and three Marines with 11 Japanese soldiers, Lucas saved the lives of the other three Marines from two enemy hand grenades that were thrown into their trench by unhesitatingly placing himself on one grenade, while in the next instant pulling the other grenade under him.
The grenade he covered with his body exploded, and wounded him severely; the other grenade did not explode. He is the youngest Marine and the youngest serviceman in World War II to be awarded the United States' highest military decoration for valor
He later reenlisted (sic) in the United States Army and reached the rank of captain.
Medal of Honor presented by President Harry S. Truman, another one who benefited from white privilege. The "Later Life" section of the wiki entry is a must read.

If it were not for "bad luck," I'm not sure Jack Lucas would have had any luck at all. What a patriot.

Twelve Angry Jurors -- September 11, 2021

Then (link here): two women charged with train terror near Canadian border. If stymied by the NYT paywall, that story was posted December 2, 2020, and is easily found everywhere. The women: Ellen Brennan Reich, and Samantha Frances Brooks.

Now (link here): both women convicted.

After a two-day trial and three hours of deliberation, a federal jury in Seattle on Thursday convicted Ellen Brennan Reich, 28, of Bellingham, of violence against a rail carrier. Her co-defendant, 24-year-old Samantha Frances Brooks, pleaded guilty in July.

Two-day trial.

The first day is explaining to the jury what this is all about.

The second day is wrapping things up and giving the case to the jury.

Three hours of deliberation.

Coincidentally, I watched Henry Fonda in Twelve Angry Men yesterday. Too bad for Ellen and Samantha that they didn't have a "Henry Fonda" on the jury. LOL.

My hunch: the twelve jurors felt they just lost three days of their lives they will never get back.

Covid-19 Vaccine -- Whatever Happened To The JNJ Vaccine? -- September 11, 2021

We will start with a "fun one" today.

A reader sent me a long note overnight regarding Covid-19 vaccines and adverse events.

The note exceeded the length maximum for a stand-alone post on the blog so I posted the note in its entirety here. I had to re-post the CDC VAERS data so it's possible the formatting changed, and there could possibly be other errors that I caused, but I believe it's correct. Whatever.

So, read the note at the link above. These are just some of my observations / comments.

1. VAERS is completely voluntary, so these numbers are incredibly low. In the thirty years I practiced pediatrics, I never once reported a vaccine-associated adverse event, not even for one of my patients in which a DPT vaccine was said to have caused seizures. So, these numbers are way under-reported.

2. VAERS is completely voluntary, and individual reports are not investigated by the CDC. They are simply received, tabulated, and posted. Any physician (any health care provider?) can submit a suspected adverse event on the easily-obtained government form.

3. On the VAERS report at the link, note the number of "birth defects" said to be due to the vaccine. There's no way in the world that even comes close to reality. These are malpractice cases. Oldest scam in the medical litigation arena. Instead of ambulance chasing, it's birth-defect chasing. Any pregnant person that gives birth to a child with a birth defect can easily find a lawyer (especially if they live in Texas or Louisiana) who can find a reason why her physician or her healthcare plan was at blame for the birth defect. Completely bogus.

4. Deaths: same thing, though not necessarily malpractice - litigation cases. But I will bet every one of those birth defect cases go on to litigation.

5. The reader mentions the stock market with regard to JNJ, MRNA, and PFE. From Yahoo!Finance:

  • the market was down yesterday, so don't look at the one-day numbers.
  • all pharmaceuticals dropped a bit yesterday for various reasons (mostly due to Medicare-releated news).
  • but look at Moderna, the mRNA company. You are completely correct.
    • six months ago: Moderna (MRNA): $140 / share.
    • yesterday: $449 / share. Record high back in August: $484 / share

6. Those with white privilege know how to read the pharmaceutical tea leaves and have made a killing off the Covid vaccine story.  And the really, really smart white privilege folks invested in Moderna, and not JNJ.
