Reader Provides Additional Information Regarding An Oasis Federal Well In Willow Creek -- December 18, 2023

Locator: 46342B.

See this post and comments at that post.

The Fraser Federal 5300 11-35 4B is designated "PA" by the NDIC and a revised (R) permit was issued for a well to be renamed Fraser Federal 5300 11-35 4BR. Note, both the surface hole and the bottom hole were changed from the first permit to the second permit.

The two scout tickets.

The Cybertruck Is Not An Off-Roading Vehicle -- December 18, 2023

Locator: 46341TESLA.

Based on the story, it appears journalists (and perhaps the general public) don't understand why this could happen. There's quite a story here and at the end of the day, this is the story: the Cybertruck is not an all-terrain vehicle; it is not an off-roading vehicle.

Huge Christmas Present -- NFL -- December 18, 2023

Locator: 46339SPORTS.

Before we get started, for the archives: tonight on NFL MNF perhaps one of the most exciting finishes ever when the Seattle Seahawks, a mediocre team at best this year, beat the Philadelphia Eagles, a very good team this year, in a spectacular finish, 20 - 17. It took two spectacular plays in the last few minutes to pull off and secure the win.

Now, to the NFL Christmas present to fans.

Link here.

The clearest sign that Brock Purdy is a big-time NFL quarterback?

We’ve stopped freaking out that Brock Purdy is an NFL quarterback, period.

Because he’s not supposed to be one—at least not according to the edified minds who assemble professional North American football teams, who repeatedly passed over Purdy until San Francisco took him, dead last, 262nd overall, the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

It’s a selection so desultory it comes with a tongue-in-cheek nickname that isn’t really tongue-in-cheek: Mr. Irrelevant.

Last year Purdy’s story was: Wow, Mr. Irrelevant is actually starting games as a rookie for the Niners.

Then it was: Mr. Irrelevant is pretty good!

Now it’s: Is Mr. Irrelevant actually going to win league MVP?

Purdy faces sturdy MVP competition, including Baltimore’s dazzling Lamar Jackson, who was stellar as the Ravens beat Jacksonville Sunday night. There’s Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, and possibly Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. There’s Dallas’s Dak Prescott, should he rebound from Sunday’s long, losing afternoon against the Buffalo Bills.

There’s also running back Christian McCaffrey, an all-around playmaker on Purdy’s Niners team—though non-quarterbacks tend to be disadvantaged in MVP votes (Adrian Peterson was the last non-QB to win, in 2012).

It’s Purdy who has the inside track after a stellar performance Sunday in which he threw for four touchdowns and 242 yards in a 45-29 defeat of Arizona. Despite taking a heavy hit in the second quarter which caused him to miss a handful of plays, Purdy recovered to steer San Francisco to its sixth straight win and an early clinch of the NFC West division.

Lamar Jackson and Brock Purdy face of Christmas Day, December 25, 2023.

My hunch: MVP is pretty nice but going to the Super Bowl is a whole lot nicer.

Buffett and GM: Parted Ways

GM will be a great "trading" stock; whether it's a great investment (30-year horizon) is another story. Investors like Buffett have voiced their opinion, albeit very, very quietly.

GM's Bolt andd Cruise updates are tracked here.

Link here.

Barra's place in GM's history is secure. The first woman to lead a global automaker, Barra has now held the top job at the automaker longer than anyone other than Alfred P. Sloan, the architect of GM's rise to become the world's largest industrial corporation during the mid-20th century.

Sloan and his immediate successors faced no serious challenges from Japanese or European automakers and no demands from regulators to abandon fundamental technology.

Competition and regulation have forced Barra to put sustaining profits over defending a sprawling global empire.

Barra sold or closed GM's money-losing operations in Europe, Australia and Southeast Asian markets. GM's market share and profit in China have fallen as the world's largest auto market has shifted to EVs made by Tesla and by BYD and other Chinese automakers.

GM is still No. 1 in U.S. sales volume, but Tesla is by far the more valuable company with a market capitalization of $775 billion to GM's $46 billion.

Like Roger Smith, who led GM during the 1980s, Barra has tried to revive investor interest by repositioning GM as a technology enterprise.

She told investors in October 2021 that GM could double its annual revenue by 2030 to $280 billion by adding EVs, expanding sales of digital subscriptions, ramping up the Cruise robotaxi operation, supplying vehicles to the U.S. military and developing a new electric van delivery service.

But during the second half of 2023, key elements of Barra's growth strategy stalled.

The biggest trouble is at Cruise, which has lost $8 billion since GM acquired it in 2016. Barra has told investors Cruise could generate $50 billion a year in revenue by 2030.

Cruise's future is now uncertain after regulators charged officials with misrepresenting details of an accident in which a Cruise driverless car dragged a pedestrian 20 feet (6.1 m )before stopping.

The Cruise incident has put Barra back in the role of crisis manager.

Shortly after she took over as CEO in 2014, she faced a scandal over GM's mishandling of deadly ignition switches. Barra resolved that in part by commissioning an outside law firm to investigate GM's mishandling of safety recalls. She embraced the firm's scathing critique of GM's culture.

Barra has again engaged an outside law firm and technical experts to investigate Cruise's response to the accident. Cruise's CEO, Kyle Vogt, has left the company. The unit's new leaders, including GM's chief counsel Craig Glidden, have pledged to cooperate with regulators.
Unless I missed it, the article failed to mention the thousands of workers GM will layoff after Christmas.

Yes, Barra's history with GM is secure.

Something happened on the way to the forum: 2023 was to be the breakout year for Mary Barra and GM.

RBN Energy: Kinder Morgan builds a south Texas network aimed at Mexico, LNG exports.

Kinder Morgan owns and operates natural gas pipelines across pretty much every part of the U.S., from California to Massachusetts and North Dakota to Florida. But if you look at a map of its gas pipeline assets, you’ll notice a focus on lines in the Lone Star State that serve as critical pathways for Permian- and Eagle Ford-sourced gas flowing to Mexico, Texas’s Gulf Coast and a number of existing and planned LNG export terminals.
Now, Kinder is poised to significantly expand its pipeline network in that part of the world with the planned $1.8 billion acquisition of NextEra Energy Partners’ STX Midstream unit, as we discuss in today’s RBN blog.
