Original Post

From The WSJ today, link here:

U.S. workers’ filings for unemployment benefits dropped last week to the lowest level in two months, suggesting employers are clinging to their workers in a tight job market.

Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, decreased to a seasonally adjusted 232,000 last week from a revised 237,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday.

“After trending higher for several months, initial claims have drifted lower, providing more evidence that labor market conditions remain tight despite fairly weak economic growth,” said Nancy Vanden Houten, lead U.S. economist at forecasting-firm Oxford Economics.

From earlier today on the blog:

BLS unemployment numbers:

From August 28, 2022: lots of room to put "millions out of work” and still stay below 3% U-1 unemployment.

Now, 9:42 p.m. CT, Thursday night, we'll add this:

How can the unemployment rate stay unchanged with the data we've been seeing this week?

The Biden Administration Does The Right Thing For Military Spouses -- September 1, 2022

From the government today. This is huge.

Since the inception of SBP and DIC, the GOP has had ample opportunity to do this. They never did. And the GOP says they are the party "supporting the military" and they never did this.

Now, the Biden administration has quietly done the right thing.

From my e-mail:

Even After The Release -- The SPR Will Have Way More Than "We" Need -- September 1, 2022

Wow, wow, wow -- I said this just the other day.

Come October, if necessary, the Biden administration can extend the SPR release. This is not rocket science.

For those who may have forgotten what I said then, the "new SPR" is the Permian, the Bakken, the Eagle Ford, and the western Canadian sands.

Jay Powell, the Fed chairman: it's going to be painful.

WTI Continues To Fall; Chinese In Another Lockdown -- September 1, 2022

EIA: has lost all credibility.

  • If any doubt, look at SecEnergy and the White House press secretary.

Lukoil chairman:

  • in-hospital death. Complications of Covid?
  • Lukoil: second largest company in Russia after Gazprom
    • Gazprom: natural gas
    • Lukoil: oil, making Lukiol the largest oil company in Russia
    • Lukoil chairman on record as criticizing Putin's Ukraine invasion

Jobs report:

  • this is not stagflation
  • this is a latent rip-roaring economy with the Fed scared it can't hang on / control things, and the Biden administration getting ready to spend even more money
  • for the past six months we've been told "the jobs number"is a lagging indicator, and that lagging indicator just keeps getting "better"
  • stagflation: high unemployment, slow growth, and high inflation; we've got two of the three, and the third might be "relative"
  • folks are freaking out over a 4%-Fed rate which might in fact be the Goldilocks number

RBN Energy: E&P shareholders reap soaring returns while producers boost cash balances

Champagne corks were popping in E&P boardrooms and executive suites over the past few weeks as they unveiled record-high second-quarter 2022 earnings and cash flows. The strong financial results in the near-idyllic quarter — pre-tax operating earnings and cash flows surged by 29% and 22%, respectively, from the already elevated Q1 2022 levels — were driven by soaring commodity prices and producers’ strict financial discipline. And the celebrations weren’t limited to E&P headquarters. Shareholders have also benefited as companies passed on the unprecedented largess to their investors. In today’s RBN blog, we analyze how U.S. oil and gas producers distributed their soaring free cash flows and discuss the underlying corporate strategies.
