Original Post

A reader asked about the "strange" production profile of these four wells. The graphic of these four wells is below the spreadsheets.

The reader notes the middle Bakken wells seem to be on-line and flowing continuously since coming back on-line in September. However the two Three Forks wells were on-line for only a few days each month, during the very same period. The reader wonders why the Three Forks wells would be on-line sporadically compared to the continuous production for the middle Bakken wells.

In the graphic below, it appears that the production profiles, nor the dates of the completions / fracked dates of the few neighboring wells to the Kennedy / Miles wells had anything to do with the production profiles of those Kennedy / Miles wells.

I cannot make heads or tails, rhyme or reason, any explanation for the production profiles of these wells. I look at hundreds of production profiles and the production profiles of these wells would not have raised a "red flag" in my mind. It simply looks like they had the wells on line for about 15 days in March, 2015, when they completed the frack, and tested the wells. Then, for whatever reason, they took the wells off-line until September, 2015. Why the middle Bakken wells were on-line continuously once they started flowing in mid-September, whereas the Three Forks wells were flowing for just a few days, completely escapes me.

There is nothing in the file report that might explain this. I read the files quickly and might have missed something.

Perhaps another reader might have more insight.

On another note:
Unrelated to what the reader asked, for newbies, one might ask why there was no production whatsoever for so many months. I don't know. The four wells were drilled in late 2014. In March, 2015, they were fracked/completed, almost at the same time.

But then they were taken off-line for several months. About that same time there might have been road restrictions due to spring thaw (I don't know). Maybe they didn't have the storage tanks on site, or did not have the flaring situation under control -- note that when they did come on-line they were still flaring, but the following month, most of the gas was captured. Maybe there was some pad work that had to be done before bringing the wells back on line. Perhaps with prices so low, CLR has cut way back on crews, and it was simply a matter of scheduling to get folks out to the pad to get it up and running. Perhaps there were issues with electricity getting out to the pad. Maybe I'm missing something obvious.
But whatever, there was probably some operational reason for the delay, not bringing them all on line, until September.
But that does not explain the middle Bakken / Three Forks discrepancy that the reader noticed. I, too, am curious if there is more to this that might help us understand the Bakken.

The other possibility, and the one that I will default to for the foreseeable future: with the price of Bakken at $30 or less, all bets are off to trying to figure out production profiles.

But like I said above, perhaps another reader has insight to why there was such a long period between testing/completing these wells and production beginning.

These are the wells in Dimmick Lake, all 2560-acre spacing:
  • 29121, 567, CLR, Kennedy 4-6H1, t3/15; cum 219K 11/19;
  • 29122, 639, CLR, Miles 3-6H, t3/15; cum 266K 11/19;
  • 29123, 605, CLR, Kennedy 4-31H1, t3/15; cum 233K 11/19;
  • 29124, 633, CLR, Kennedy 3-31H, t3/15; cum 343K 11/19;
