Shares Of Bakken Operators Plunge After Government Warning

Reuters via Rigzone is reporting:
Shares of Whiting Petroleum Corp , Continental Resources Inc and other top crude oil producers in the Bakken shale formation plunged on Thursday after the U.S. government said oil produced there may be extra flammable. The warning came three days after a BNSF train carrying crude oil collided in eastern North Dakota with another train carrying grain.
The resulting explosion led to the temporary evacuation of a nearby town and added to the growing concern about the safety of oil-by-rail shipments. Last July a runaway oil train, which originated in North Dakota, derailed and exploded in a small Quebec town, killing 47 people.
Oil extracted from the Bakken, a vast rock formation underneath North Dakota and Montana, "may be more flammable than traditional heavy crude oil," the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, said on Thursday.
Whiting & Continental, the largest Bakken producers, saw their shares fall more than 3.5 percent after the announcement. Shares of Oasis Petroleum Inc, Kodiak Oil & Gas Corp and Northern Oil & Gas Inc saw similar drops.
Crude oil prices also fell, contributing to the decline. The U.S. government's warning should come as no surprise considering refineries and other oil buyers value the high energy content of Bakken crude oil, said Ron Ness, the head of the North Dakota Petroleum Council, a trade group for oil producers. "I don't think there's any surprise that Bakken crude oil is the highest quality crude oil available and it has more of those high-end components that you're looking for in a top-shelf crude oil," Ness said.

A Watershed Decade?

I started out the day reading about the legalization of marijuana in Colorado with expectations that before the decade is out, marijuana will be legal across the United States.

At midday I read more about the Obamacare debacle.

At dusk I read that more than half of the women in the US Marines were unable to pass the new physical fitness plan as part of the process to move women into combat positions. The women were unable to do three pull-ups, the minimum required. [From wiki: The minimum a 17 to 26 year old male Marine must complete are 3 pull-ups, 50 crunches, and a 28 minute 3-mile run.]

Twenty-Eight (28) Pages Of Hess Wells Transferred To Hess Bakken Investments II, LLC -- January 2, 2014

Active rigs: 183

Today's NDIC daily activity report may have set some sort of record. Normally, the daily activity report runs 1 to 3 pages. A six-page report is very, very long. Today's daily activity report runs to 29 pages.

Seven (7) new permits --
  • Operators: Emerald Oil (4), EOG (2), MRO
  • Fields: Charbonneau (McKenzie), Parshall (Mountrail), Reunion Bay (Mountrail)
  • Comments:
Wells coming off the confidential list were reported earlier; see sidebar at the right.

Two (2) producing wells were completed:
  • 26192, 501, Sequel, Hove 11-21H-2128-15895-TF, McGregor, t12/ 13; no production data,
  • 26193, 1,067, Sequel, Morris 11-21H-0916-15895-MB, McGregor, t9/13; no production data,
The reason for a 29-page NDIC daily activity report today was the fact that it took about 28 pages to list all the wells that were being transferred from Hess Corporation to Hess Bakken Investments II, LLC. You almost wonder if a reader was correct, suggesting that Hess maybe getting their ducks in order to sell off their Bakken assets. Just thinking out loud. The chronology of Hess Bakken Investments II, LLC, is posted here. I'm not going to count them but if there are about 55 wells per page, that works out to over 1500 wells.

Wells coming off the confidential list tomorrow:
  • 24378, 515, CLR, Barney 5-29H-2, Brooklyn, t9/13; cum 29K 11/13;
  • 24945, drl, XTO, Sorkness State 24X-36A, Sorkness, producing, a nice well,

J. Paul Getty Biography

Seeing the 28 pages of wells being transferred from Hess Corporation to Hess Bakken Investments II, LLC, reminds me of a story J Paul Getty told in his biography As I See It. The Gettys, father and son, back in 1923, were involved only in oil exploration and production, but always thought about becoming an integrated, well-to-consumer oil company at a cost "within their resources." The stock market crash in 1929 did not affect the Gettys but shares in publicly-held companies provided an opportunity to purchase assets at unbelievable bargain prices. For every dollar spent, one could buy $20 worth of assets.

J P Getty's dad died in 1930 (age 75); his mother and his father's executors were too timid to take advantage of the situation, so J Paul Getty decided to go out on his own, using his own capital. In 1932, he was 39 years old.

J Paul Getty set his sights on a California oil driller, the Tidewater Associated Oil Company; it took him twenty years to obtain clear-cut numerical control of this company.

The president and board chairman of Tidewater did not want to be bought out, nor did the Tidewater board of directors, so they fought J Paul Getty's overtures.

It turned out that the controlling interest of Tidewater actually belonged to Standard Oil of New Jersey (J D Rockefeller). When he learned that, Getty knew it would be all but impossible to buy Tidewater. But he had sunk so much money into buying shares in the company he had no choice but to continue to try.

One day, he got a call from an intermediary telling him that Standard Oil of New Jersey had transferred the company's Tidewater shares to a holding company in Nevada called Mission Corporation. The company planned to re-distribute Mission Shares to all Standard Oil shareholders. The shares would be dispersed so broadly it would be impossible for Getty to buy the company.

The intermediary told Getty that although Standard Oil of New Jersey had transferred the company shares, Rockefeller himself still had his Tidewater shares and was willing to sell them to a buyer.

Rockefeller was out of the loop. No one had told him why the company was transferring Tidewater shares to Mission Corporation.

The intermediary bought Rockefeller's Tidewater shares on Getty's behalf. By the time Rockefeller found out what had happened, Getty had the shares. Getty then let it be known that Rockefeller sold his Tidewater shares, suggesting that if Rockefeller didn't want to own shares in Tidewater / Mission Corporation, maybe no one would want their shares, and would be willing to sell them. The ruse worked.

Lawsuits ensued, but Getty won the day. He had controlling interest of Mission Corporation but not full control of Tidewater; that would not occur until 1952.

The Standard Oil - Tidewater - Mission Corporation played out during the 1930's.

In 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. J Paul Getty sent a telegram to his personal friend James Forrestal, the assistant secretary of the navy, asking to enlist. He was 49.

Getty and Forrestal met to discuss the issue. Forrestal said that Getty would not be allowed sea duty.

It so happened that Forrestal knew of Getty's relationship with Mission Corporation and Tidewater.

At the time Standard Oil was trying to hold control of Tidewater through Mission Corporation, the Standard Oil management overlooked the fact that Mission Corporation also held a 57% interest in Skelly Oil Company, a large midcontinent oil company headquartered in Tulsa.

By gaining control of Mission, Getty also gained control of Skelly.

Among its many holdings, Skelly owned the Spartan Aircraft Corporation.

Spartan had two divisions: a) training pilots; and, b) manufacturing aircraft components. Both divisions were in bad shape. The Navy put Getty in charge of Spartan and he turned the company around.

Spartan was under contract to train air cadets for the US military, the Royal Air Force (British), and the Royal Canadian Air Force.

At the height of the Pacific campaign, Getty was training thousands of pilots and delivering aircraft components to Grumann, Douglas, Boeing, Lockheed, and other prime contractors.

After V-J Day, Getty stayed on at Spartan to oversee the conversion of operations into peacetime manufacturing of house trailers and mobile homes, desperately needed for all the returning troops and the coming post-war boom.

Another Hit Album For Norah?

It's hard to say. The music may appeal to a narrow audience, but that audience may be a bit bigger than I realize. It is playing in Starbucks right now, and in some Starbucks the CD is available for sale. It was playing at the Barnes and Noble at The Grove/Farmers Market, Los Angeles, tonight, but the CD, interestingly enough, was not available. (I posted this video yesterday, I believe, but am posting it again.)

From wiki:
Foreverly is a collaborative album by Billie Joe Armstrong, best known as lead singer and guitarist of Green Day, and jazz/pop singer-songwriter Norah Jones.
It was released on November 25, 2013 through Reprise Records. Foreverly is a collection of traditional songs, and is a reinterpretation of the 1958 album Songs Our Daddy Taught Us by The Everly Brothers. It is promoted by the lead single "Long Time Gone". A lyric video for the song was released on November 13, 2013, and was followed by the release of a music video for "Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" five days later.

Apple on top. Mac Rumors is reporting:
Apple's iPhone was the only smartphone to gain mobile web traffic share in North America during the holidays, according to a new report from analytics firm Chitika, suggesting that the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c were popular with consumers over the holiday season.

The iPhone saw a 1.8 percent jump in web traffic from the period between December 20 and December 29, while other smartphone manufacturers experienced no gains or a slight loss in traffic share. Overall, the iPhone has a 54.3 percent share of total mobile web traffic, far above its closest competitor Samsung, which has a 23.7 percent share.
And Apple tablets are even farther ahead. When I read all the stories about other tablets, I assume the competition is close (which does not go along with what I observe while out and about -- it seems 99% of all tablets I see are iPads):
Despite its minor share loss, the iPad remains the most popular tablet, comprising 76.1 percent of all mobile web traffic in North America. Apple's closest competitor, Amazon, has a 9.4 percent share, while Microsoft and Samsung come in at 2.3 and 5.9 percent.

Unemployment, first time claims: drop 2,000 to 339,000. The much less volatile, and therefore much more meaningful four-week average actually rose 8,500 to 357,250.

Nearly 4.5 million people have received some form of unemployment benefits in the most recent week for which data is available; that's 180,000 more than the previous week.

[Incidentally, 4.5 million is almost exactly the number of folks who have had their health insurance policies canceled due to Obamacare. Obama supporters say the number is closer to 4 million; Tea Party folks say the number is closer to 4.7 million. The administration says maybe as many as 1.1 million folks enrolled in ObamaCare at the federal website. How many actually pay that first premium is the 800-pound gorilla siting in the ER waiting room this morning.]

Chicago sees greatest snowfall in 15 years. CBS Chicago is reporting:
The winter storm is the biggest to hit Chicago on New Year’s Day since 1999. As of midnight Wednesday night, 5.1 inches had fallen at O’Hare International Airport. The northern suburbs were hit hardest, with around a foot in much of Lake County — 13.8 inches in Libertyville, 12.4 in Beach Park, and 12.3 in Gurnee.
Do you all remember that headline in The (London Independent in 2000? Snowfalls are a thing of the past. Patrick Kennedy and others were concerned their children (or grandchildren or somebody's children) would never see snow in the future. Fly 'em out to Chicago (if the runways are clear.)

NYC snow warning. Boston: up to 14 inches. It looks like the Kennedy children or grandchildren won't have to go far to see snow - a "thing of the past." LOL.

Yes, had it not been for the Drudge Report, I would not have known that the ship ice-bound-and stranded-in-the-Antarctic was a research ship looking for evidence of global warming during the summer at the South Pole. The press seldom mentioned "global warming" in their reporting.

Top story: ObamaCare -- an uneasy launch. Whether you want to read the story or not, there are two interactive graphics at the link that are outstanding: an immediate return of the lowest cost bronze health care plan in every county in the United States, as well as a graphic link to your state's health exchange.

A nice analysis by David Wessel on the surprises from 25 years of covering the economy.  Four surprises stand out:
  • that the American middle class has not done better
  • that China has done so well
  • that 9/11 didn't have a longer-lasting harmful economic impact
  • that the US was so vulnerable to a financial shock
If you have time to read just one story today, this might be it.

Tablets, Facebook beat smartphones, Pinterest in holiday sales.
Online sales swelled 10.3% this holiday season compared with the same period in 2012, with massive surges in mobile use, according to the IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark.
During the fourth quarter, mobile traffic made up nearly 35% of all online visits, up 40% from last year, according to IBM. Nearly 17% of digital sales originated from mobile devices, a 46% upswing year over year.
Major shopping days such as Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday all enjoyed record online sales, as shoppers were lured by increasingly attractive Internet-exclusive promotions and free shipping deals.
On Christmas Day alone, online sales surged 16.5% from the same holiday last year.

Shoppers using tablets spent an average of $118.09 per order, according to IBM. Those on smartphones shelled out $104.72 per order.
The per-order amount from shoppers referred to retailers by Pinterest was $109.93 -- outpacing the $60.48 amount from consumers following a trail from Facebook.
But Facebook managed to successfully convert visits into sales 3.5 times more often than Pinterest did, according to IBM.
My younger daughter had to explain to me what "Pinterest" was. LOL.

A Note to the Granddaughters

I've finished reading the Salinger biography by David Shields and Shane Salerno. We recently visited the Getty Museum -- perhaps our favorite museum in the Los Angeles area -- and picked up two autobiographies by (of?) J Paul Getty. It is fun to read the passage about his parents decision on where to live when they moved to southern California in February (think winter), 1905.
We left Minneapolis in February 1905. After looking over San Diego (Father thought it too small a town), La Jolla (it was remote and isolated), Santa Monica (a straggly seaside hamlet) and some other towns, my parents concluded that they liked Los Angeles best. Although we once more returned to Minneapolis ... in 1906 we moved to Los Angeles permanently.
My father bought a corner plot on Wilshire Boulevard at Kingsley Drive. He had a large Tudor-style house built. It became our new home.
It is now a business district. We drove right past it about a week ago after visiting the Petersen Automotive Museum which is about a mile west of Wilshire and Kingsley, it appears. A huge Roman Catholic Church, St Basil, sits on the northwest corner of the intersection. This would be in the area of Wilshire's Miracle Mile.
