Nice Human Interest Story Coming Out of the Bakken

After four nights of sleeping in a pickup in the Williston Walmart parking lot in January, Levi Steff was ready to go home.

But then the 22-year-old from western New York, who moved to the Oil Patch with his older brother, went to a local church service and heard a sermon about not giving up.

They didn't give up and are surviving and saving money to pay off school debts. They are working 80-hour weeks but:

They’re also trying to have fun while they’re here, and they enjoy connecting with other people who have relocated to the Oil Patch.

“It’s so refreshing to be around so many people who have such a heart of adventure,” Eric said.

And so it goes.

The Release of Oil From US Strategic Petroleum Reserve Likely To Have Little Effect on the Price of Gasoline

The tea leaves suggest world leaders are getting ready for a huge coordinated release of emergency oil supplies to offset shortages due to Iranian sanctions. (Saudi Arabia has said there is no need, interestingly enough.)

Readers may be interested in re-reading a USA Today article analyzing the effects of releasing oil from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).

Current logistical problems may make the Strategic Petroleum Reserve's expected relief even more difficult to deliver this year than in the past. Reuters reported that the reversal of the Seaway pipeline, a major Texas-to-Oklahoma pipeline, will reduce the distribution capacity of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve's Bryan Mound, Texas site (its largest source). Additionally, last year some of the reserve fuel made it to west coast (1.2 million barrels) and east coast refiners (1.4 million barrels). But that volume is unlikely to be matched in 2012.

To repeat: in the past the SPR oil reached the Midwest (where it's hardly needed); very little reached the West Coast or the East Coast where most Americans live.

But this time it's even worse:

On the east coast, refinery capacity has been significantly reduced by two Pennsylvania refinery closings and a third (Sunoco's Philadelphia refinery) closing slated for July. The three combined represent more than 700,000 barrels per day of lost refining capacity.

As mentioned in an earlier post, if release of oil from the US SPR does not lower the price of gasoline, there is no Plan B.

Interestingly enough, the political spin may be very much like the $1 trillion stimulus. When the unemployment rate was minimally affected by the record stimulus, the political spin was that without the stimulus, the unemployment rate would have been even worse.

So, I suppose that if gasoline prices change little with the release of oil from the SPR, the political spin will be that it would have been much worse had the oil not been released.

So, we'll see.

Random Data From the API -- Oil and Gas Industry Impact on North Dakota

According to the American Petroleum Institute (API), In North Dakota, the oil and natural gas industry currently means:

• Nearly 37,000 statewide jobs provided or supported – with an average salary of $71,678 for non-gas station oil and natural gas employees
• $1.8 billion contributed to state labor income
• $3.8 billion contributed to the state’s economy

According to API: 

"With the right energy and tax policies in place, the industry could be doing even more to put downward pressure on high fuel prices and create new jobs in North Dakota. In fact, the oil and natural gas industry could add 13,144 jobs to the North Dakota economy by 2015 and 15,840 additional jobs by 2020.

"The industry could also generate an average of $54 million in new, additional revenue for the state every year through 2030 -- enough to cover more than one-third of North Dakota’s general fund contribution to the University of North Dakota budget every year, without using additional taxpayer dollars."

Three Amigos Restaurant opens -- I may have posted this earlier; link to Williston Herald

The owners of the new restaurant 3 Amigos Southwest Grill, scheduled to open 5 a.m. Wednesday on the corner of Main and 11th streets, are planning to let their customers set the hours, according to Aaron Parker, co-owner with Cam Holt. This idea is the result of their research into Williston’s restaurant options. Parker said many places aren’t open long enough to adequately serve customers.

“The later people come in at night, the later we’ll stay open. If people are coming in at 5 o’clock in the morning we’ll keep our hours at 5 o’clock in the morning. We didn’t establish hours. We want our customers to set the hours for us,” Parker said.

As oil slowdown continues in Alaska, those workers moving to North Dakota; link to Alaska Journal of Commerce 

Alaska’s once-bustling oilfield fabrication shops are now empty, CH2M Hill’s among them. ASRC Energy, which also operates a fabrication shop in south Anchorage, reports a similar situation.

Last year the welders, pipe fabricators and electrical technicians were busy building things for the oil fields. Not this year.

NANA/Colt Engineering operates a facility in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, and Flowline Inc. does fabrication as well as pipe-coating at its Fairbanks plant.

Everyone is in the same boat, Maloney said.

“I’ve never seen things so bad. Even in 1988, oil prices dropped to $10 a barrel but we were still busy. That’s because people were optimistic, and planning new projects. They knew the oil price would go back up,” Maloney said. “Now prices are almost $120 a barrel and we’ve got this pessimism. We’re losing our key workers to North Dakota where oil work is booming.”

Random Update On Chesapeake in Southwest North Dakota -- Mission Canyon, Madison Group

Updates:

May 16, 2012: a reader noticed that Nomac 312 is no longer on the active drilling list which suggests that CHK has completed drilling the two wells on the Grenz pad. See below. Remember: McLendon said he was going to test a new formation (other than the Bakken / Three Forks); maybe this is what he was referring to.

A reader has noticed that Chesapeake is moving one of its rigs in Stark County to another location in the same immediate area. [The link is dynamic and the data will change frequently.]

According to the NDIC active rig list, Chesapeake is moving rig NOMAC 312 from Hutzenbiler 9-137-99 A 1H to Grenz 26-138-98 A 2H about 9 miles to the northeast.

According to the well file, the Three Forks is the target of the Hutzenbiler.

Note: Chesapeake has two wells on one pad in this area, each apparently targeting a different formation:

• 22153, loc, Grenz 26-138-08 A 2H, Mission Canyon Pool; wildcat;
• 22185, conf, Grenz 26-138-98 A 1H (already drilled), wildcat, Bakken/Three Forks Pool

The Madison group is composed of the Charles, Mission Canyon, and Lodgepole formations. 

Prior to the current Bakken Boom, 60% of all oil produced in North Dakota had come from the Charles and the Mission Canyon.

Note: many wells I have mentioned in earlier posts are "Madison" wells -- without additional information, one would not know if Charles, Mission Canyon, or Lodgepole. I don't recall seeing any "Mission Canyon" wells in the past; I have always seen Madison wells (of the three in this discussion).

The Lodgepole and Mission Canyon are carbonates and have porosity; the Charles Formation is dominated by [salts] and lacks permeability.
