Whiting's String of Three Forks Wells -- Stark County -- North Dakota, USA

Activity in Stark County

Permits Issued in 2011
  • 20449, Whiting, Marsh 21-16TFH, Dutch Henry Butte: According to Gary: The Marsh well that was "Dry."  They screwed up when they where cementing the casing to isolate the fresh water aquifers from the well.  I heard they got the depth of cement wrong so they had to start over with a new permit and hole.. skidded the rig a few feet and got busy and drilled another whole on same pad... I guess it worked because that rig is on the Solberg Pad now...

April 28, 2011: Due to mechanical difficulties at the Obrigewitch 21-17TFH, Whiting believes that only one or two frac stages of the well’s total 16 frac stages are contributing to current production. Despite these difficulties, the Obrigewitch well was completed flowing 1,189 BOE per day. Whiting holds a 96% working interest and a 77% net revenue interest in the well.

    Original Posting

    The Whiting well reported out today gave me a reason to look again at the string of wells Whiting has in the Stark County, the southwest area of North Dakota that are targeting the Three Forks formation.

    Whiting has a string of Three Forks wells running west to east north of Belfield which should be very exciting to follow:
    • 19444, 3,106, Hecker 21-18TFH, cum 152K as of August, 2011
    • 19623, 1,075, Obrigewitch 21-17TFH, rig on site, 93K as of August, 2011
    • 19337, 722, called a wildcat, but in the North Creek oil field, northeast of Belfield
    • 20079, DRL, Obrigewitch 21-16TFH; 57K in first two monthts;
    • 19891, LOC, Cymbaluk 21-15TFH
    • 19819, Conf, Lydia 21-14TFH; 30K in Sep/Oct 11
    • 18837, 1,780, Kubas 11-13TFH
    In addition, Whiting has a rig on site, south of Belfield:
    • 19820, 843, Dietz 21-17TFH, Gaylord oil field, 40K as of August, 2011
    Note: The Whiting well linked above was a Madison well, the BSMU 3604, neither a Bakken nor a Three Forks:
    • 18625, 368, BSMU 3604, looks like this Madison was producing 300 bbls/day the first couple of months, 110K as of August 2011;
    For now I'm going to assume "BSMU" stands for "Big Stick Madison Unit." "Big Stick" for the oil field, and "M" for Madison, the formation.

    Whiting was issued 25 permits in Stark County in 2010; almost all of them with a Three Forks designation, and almost all of them wildcats.

    Oil for America was issued 6 permits in Stark County in 2010; all of them targeting the Lodgepole, and almost all of them wildcats, and all of them vertical wells.

    Fidelity was issued 7 permits  in Stark County in 2010; almost all of them wildcats. I would assume these will target the Three Forks formation.

    Continental Resources was issued only one (1) permit in Stark County in 2010.

    1. the hecker well 19444 is either having drilling problems ( which do occur ) or Whiting is looking for something extra, as this operator has been on this well since nov 7th.. which is a long time..

    2. Hmmmm. Interesting. It will be interesting to see what comes of this.

    3. Was a good flare there while drilling. Could be kicking on them or having problems setting a liner. The Kubas and Froelich were slow going also.

    5. What's up with Summit Res. # 17617 and 17559? These have been hush hush forever.

    6. I have no idea. Perhaps the folks over on the Bakken Shale Discussion Group might know more.

    8. At the NDIC website it still shows as "LOC" -- permit only, but the NDIC is about one to two months behind in reporting, so there could be activity there that I am not aware of.
