Apocalypse Now -- Rafah -- May 12, 2024

Locator: 47139WAR.

Link here.

I may have to re-read Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness.

I wonder if folks seriously following the Israelis going back into Rafah might gain something from the movie, or better yet, some analyses.

Link here.

The three main characters: Kilgore, Willard, and Kurtz.

I had forgotten that Kilgore was a lieutenant colonel.

These YouTube analyses raise more questions.

It would be interesting to know more about Kilgore's history. He's more interesting than Kurtz. How many tours has he served in Vietnam? Was he a sociopath from the very beginning, or did multiple tours make him who he is?

A reminder:

It is the extraordinary saga of Coppola and his crew and actors-who included Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Harvey Keitel, Martin Sheen, Dennis Hopper, and Harrison Ford -- battling hurricanes in the jungles of the Philippines, the calamity of a lead actor's heart attack, and crises both psychological and financial . . . in the end giving rise to a modern film classic.

Harrison Ford:

Some dates:
  • The Doors, "The End": 1967
  • My Lai: March 16, 1968
  • The movie: 1979

This is a big deal. A lot of folks have been looking forward to this for quite some time.

But even "worse": what does this say about Canada, Mexico, Latin America, South America? Wow.

What in the world are we trading with Germany and vice versa? LNG going to Germany; and German cars and trucks coming to America?

For now, we can look at this, albeit a bit dated.

And this, definitely, was not on my bingo card today.

Breaking: Defense Shakeup In Russia -- Putin Apparently Not Happy With Something -- May 12, 2024

Locator: 47135UKR.

Link here

From the linked article:

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday replaced his defense minister Sergei Shoigu, a longtime ally, nominating an economist to replace him in the most substantial shake-up to the military’s command structure since the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

In a decree published Sunday, Putin nominated Andrei Belousov, a former deputy prime minister who specializes in economics to replace Shoigu, who in turn was named as the new secretary of the Security Council, a post until now held by Nikolai Patrushev.
The elevation of an economist to lead Russia’s defense ministry signals the extent to which the war has become central to Russia’s economic paradigm. The Russian parliament was expected to approve of Putin’s appointments this week.

Shoigu, who has served as defense minister since 2012, has faced increasing scrutiny since Moscow launched its war on Ukraine, most recently last month when one of his stalwart allies Timur Ivanov, a deputy defense minister responsible for construction projects was arrested on bribery charges for allegedly receiving payoffs in the course of processing defense contracts, according to the country’s Investigative Committee.

Critics inside the Russian military have also blamed Shoigu, who has never been a professional soldier but holds the rank of general of the army, for failing to prepare the Russian Armed Forces for the war in Ukraine. His initial strategy to quickly topple the Ukrainian government and take Kyiv with minimal losses failed. While Russia’s defense ministry has only provided a public accounting of the number of its soldiers killed in Ukraine and put that tally at 5,937, the U.S. estimates that more than 300,000 Russian troops have been wounded or killed.

Last year, Shoigu was a key target of an aborted coup led by paramilitary Wagner group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, who demanded the defense minister’s removal.

DC Blox, Data Centers, And Georgia -- May 12, 2024

ETSC: data center power demand. Georgia.

Georgia and fossil fuel necessary to power data centers. Link here.

And here.

Link here. A most interesting graphic:

ATLANTA—Bill Thomson needs power fast. The problem is that many of the other businesspeople racing into Georgia do too.

Thomson heads marketing and product management at DC Blox, which in recent years built a string of data centers in midsize cities across the fast-growing Southeast. The company more recently set its sights on Atlanta—the would-be capital of the region—joining a slew of tech and industrial firms piling into the state.Vying for a piece of one of America’s hottest markets, those businesses tend to have two things in common. One is that they represent a U.S. economy increasingly driven by advanced manufacturing, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The other is that they promise to hoover up huge amounts of electricity.

That combination means Georgia’s success in luring this development comes with a side effect: Power is a big source of tension. The clean-energy goals of companies and governments are running up against the need for projects to break ground fast. So far, climate advocates fear the imperatives of growth mean more fossil fuels.

Georgia’s main utility, Georgia Power, has boosted its demand projections sixteen-fold and is pushing ahead on a hotly contested plan to burn more natural gas. Critics warn it will yield higher bills and unnecessary carbon emissions for decades. Some companies are scrambling to secure bespoke renewable-energy deals to power their development.

One major source of disruption is data centers. The facilities are ballooning in size as people spend more of their waking hours online and companies digitize everything from factory processes to fast-food drive-throughs. All that computing requires power—and for firms like DC Blox to lock it in as quickly as possible.

DC Blox.
