Trans Mountain Pipeline -- Update -- January 12, 2024

Locator: 46521TMP.

January 13, 2014: regulator reverses decision. Grants request.

Original Post

The pipeline is tracked here but it needs to be updated.

Charles Kennedy reports today; I didn't really see anything new in the article but when Charles Kennedy posts something, I listen. Probably the best contributor over at oilprice.

Data points (some of which don't make sense):

  • last week, the company said it plans to start line fill in March or May, depending on the diameter of pipe it uses and assuming there would be no other setbacks.
  • cost estimate, in round numbers, 10x initial estimate: from $2 billion to $26 billion
  • project 97.8% complete but regulator / owner still arguing over change in route / diameter of pipeline;
  • 36-inch diameter pipeline with a few hundred feet of 30-inch diameter pipe;

Reason for the recent problem: drilling is more challenging than forecast. Not sure if this is comparable to a "Boeing" problem” or a "California bullet train" problem. Perhaps this fits into a third category, all its own.
