Updates

September 16, 2023: Apple is not ceding anything to anybody. Now gaming. What they're saying about this over at social media:

Apple's A17 will be tracked here.

Link here.

Speaking of "Arm," the new Apple A17 SoC is ARM-based. Whoo-hoo! See below.

The more I read, the more impressed I am with the "15."

I've never upgraded to a current model but I am seriously considering doing something really, really crazy.

But for now, from the linked article: --

-- oh, before I go there, important links --

Tech: link here.

Apple Silicon here.

Tech: CPUs, GPUS, cores, threads and all that jazz --

How many transistors on a chip?

Look at the size of those chips. Down to 5 nm.

Intel gave up at 10 nm.

5 nm is pretty impressive.

But now, Apple is mass producing the iPhone 15 with the A17 -- a 3nm-chip manufactured by TSM.

Same link as above.

Look at this:

But let's back up:

The Barron's Edition -- September 16, 2023

Locator: 45674INV.

Seniors: front page story -- more seniors working into their 70s and 80s.

According to Barron's: people aged 75 and older are the fastest growing slide of the workforce.

Didn't we just read that all those seniors left the workplace during Covid-19 lockdown and never returned? My memory escapes me.

Not working after retiring at age 55 sounds great until you realize you don't have a hobby or you don't have money, and/or you also realize your spouse also stays home all day -- watching shows on television you don't want to watch.

Tech trader Eriv Savitz: the way he "sees" Apple is the same way folks who valued the Chrysler minivan based on the number of cup-holders it had. No clue. Lousy grammar but hopefully you get the message.

A pretty lame print edition for Barron's today. Time to move on.

Undocumented visitors
: 10,000 per day.

  • low estimate: 2,000 per day
  • high estimate: 12,000 per day
  • in general: seems to be running about 7,000 per day

Back-of-the-envelope:

  • 10,000 x 365 = 3,650,000 per year
  • 3,650,000 / 330,000,000 = 0.011 = 1.1%.

Apple iPhone 15 Pre-Orders -- Opening Day -- Wait Time Pushed Out To The Holidays -- September 16, 2023

Locator: 456725AAPL.

So many orders, Apply has had to push wait time out to November.
By Christmas there will be a shortage. Prices will come down quickly at Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon -- if one is willing to wait -- but if one wants one now, it's gonna cost you.

Again, the top end "15s" have the new 3-nm chip, and only TSM makes that chip.

Beautiful, beautiful weather in north Texas today.

  • quick bike ride this morning to Starbucks; cannot believe how nice this weather is;
  • then a shsort car ride to Trophy Club for soccer with Sophia
  • I'll be off the net most of the day

Trophy Club: one of only four towns in Texas that exceed 10,000 in population.

the other three are also in the DFW area -- master-planned; very, very wealthy; very interesting; the two best brunch restaurants in Texas are in Addison and Colleyville (right across the street from us) -- family owned; Asian, from California; taking business away from First Watch, also down the street. Brunch District has a very, very interesting "business model" -- more on that later, perhaps. Too busy now ... but wanted to get the date-time stamp

Hurricane season: where art thou?

Coincidental? Both released this year--

  • best laptop out there right now, the MacBook Air 15":
  • best smartphone out there right now, the iPhone 15:

NASCAR:

  • nice race last night -- the "junior" series
  • the varsity tonight -- late evening; Bristol
  • on our cross-country trip we drove right by Bristol
    • DFW - Nashville - Knoxville - Bristol - Gettsyburg - Pennsylvania
    • what a great country

That cross-country trip -- DFW t0 Philadelphia and back -- quite a trip -- in FIVE DAYS in a Toyota 4Ruuner

  • one birthday party -- purpose of the trip
  • two museums, including "Whistler's Mother"
  • Amish country
  • two Buc-ee's
  • two Civil War sites (Gettsyburg, PA and Shilo, TN)

Disclaimers apply.
