EVs -- Mid-Year Review -- June, 2023

In my mid-year review, I state the following:

EVs

the universal supercharger plug: Tesla NACS

• Tesla owns it
• all other supercharging networks will fold by 2025
  

transition: adoption of EVs will not unfold as expected

• RIDE: darling of Wall Street declared bankruptcy
• #1 global brand: 2Q23 deliveries to be announced shortly; will provide clearer picture
• more and more, EVs seen for elites; very, very expensive
• once one has an EV, one thinks about re-charging 24/7; the issue lives in one's mind rent-free
• we should start seeing stories on repeat buyers; used EVs for sale: won't be a pretty picture
• for 90% of Americans, switching to an EV is a bridge too far

Let's take a look at just how accurate these two statement are: 

• more and more, EVs seen for elites; very, very expensive
• once one has an EV, one thinks about re-charging 24/7; the issue lives in one's mind rent-free

From The WSJ, two days ago:

• the 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T
• "made for America" -- actually not: made for California
  
• a plug-in hybrid -- which I think are even less popular than "full" EVs
• they're not even "real" EVs;
• purpose of automobile:
• an anchor baby
• helping Stellantis meet fuel-economy and air-quality numbers in California
• price
  
• writer considers it "pricey" -- that's an under-statement
• base price: $40,935
• price, as tested: $53,245
• EPA fuel economy: 29 mpg combined (are you kidding me)
• charging time: 2.5 hours (Level 2) -- are you kidding me
• range: runs on gasoline when traveling cross-country; can charge overnight at hotels

bottom line:

• $55,000 for a "KIA cross-over"?
• produced to meet California requirements so Stellantis can sell their ICE cars in that state
• hood ornament: less cachet than a Porsche, Mercedes, BWM
