Five More States No Longer Tax Military Retirement -- February 5, 2023

Add to the "no-tax" list:

  • Arizona
  • Utah
  • Indiana
  • Nebraska
  • North Carolina

Previously on the "no-tax" list:

  • Alabama, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Only partially tax military retirement:

  • Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon and South Carolina.

Don't tax any income:

  • Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming

Number of states that don't tax military pensions:  

18 + 8 + 5 = 31

Partially: 10

No tax relief for military pensions in DC and nine states:

  • Arizona
  • New Mexico
  • Illinois
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • New Hampshire
  • Mississippi
  • Arkansas
  • Montana

Hearkening unto the Biblical admonition that "Many are called but few are chosen", the Chosen Few who actually served until retirement (what, under 0.6% of the nation's population?) truly deserve this modest recognition for the sacrifice they made for the rest of us. Thus sayeth the old guy~

    1. Agree 1000%. Most interesting: it was my experience no one in the military paid much attention to their pay. It was really quite strange -- so focused on the mission, it seemed.
