Restraint -- Over-Used And Incorrect -- June 20, 2021

From earlier today, re-posting:

Link here

If it's a rhetorical question, and I'm sure it is, fine; but if Anas really does not know, he's not reading the blog. LOL. Yes, he knows.

But there are at least two story lines in that graphic. An answer with "restraint" in it is not an answer at all. If true, that this is due to "restraint," why the "restraint"?

I'm re-posting this to give me an opportunity to expand on this graphic.

One of the most common answers given is "restraint," which I infer to mean that US shale operators are showing "restraint."

When used in that context, I infer that the "restraint" is voluntary, not "forced."

Helllloooo ... for US shale operators there is no such thing as "voluntary restraint" as implied/inferred in this discussion.

When I see folks suggest that US shale operators are "showing restraint" it suggests to me the writer is implying that US shale operators are operating as "one" -- sort of like OPEC. LOL. US shale operators are not acting as one entity. In free market capitalism (where collusion is illegal) it's a dog-eat-dog world.

Period. Dot.

I was going to write more, but I got bored. I may finish this later, but I think enough has been said.

Rambling -- Modern Life -- June 20, 2021

Today, while watching the US Open, it was noted that the USGA event was available on "Roku, Amazon Fire, and Apple TV+.

That's interesting: Apple TV+. I did not know. I will have to fact check that. LOL.

In the background, while typing this, the unreleased songs and demos of Lana Del Rey (the Ultraviolence album) are playing over my inexpensive over-the-ears headphones (while watching the golf tournament streaming over Amazon Fire on the dumb "smart" television).

But back to "Roku, Amazon Fire, and Apple TV+."

To include "Roku" is interesting. I see "Roku" as a box through which everything else streams. That's true of the Amazon TV Fire Stick also, but unlike "Roku," Amazon has an entire stable of stallions, including free shipping, Prime Video, Amazon Photos, etc. Through both "Roku" and "Amazon Fire" flow Hulu (majority owned by Disney); Disney+ (includes ESPN); Netflix; HBO Max; and, everything else.

I've discussed this before. I still think Roku disappears over time. I don't need any more cable. The Amazon Fire TV Stick fits unobtrusively into an HDMI slot behind the flat screen. And it's so cheap I think Amazon could give it away as a promotion for buying something else, perhaps high-grade Amazon speakers.

The fact that the USGA mentioned Apple TV+ among the triad is huge. It suggests that even though I don't care for Apple TV+ it must have a huge following.

Speaking of Amazon. Yesterday afternoon my wife mentioned in passing she was missing her magnifying glass which she uses when painting. Sophia has a habit of taking the magnifying glass when she wants and then it's temporarily unavailable. Two minutes later, I had click-ordered two really, really nice magnifying glasses through Amazon. They arrived moments ago. My wife was thrilled. One for her; one for Sophia and interestingly, even nicer than I had expected.

Even if I had ridden my bicycle to Target yesterday, the store would not have had the magnifying glasses I was looking for.

The other day I needed a simple 25-cent widget to attach to my bicycle pump to use for Sophia's swimming pool floatie. I bicycled to Target; none to be found. I came home and ordered an eleven-dollar pump that can plug into an automobile 12-volt outlet or plug into a 120-volt home outlet. Perfect for the car. Target didn't have those pumps either. So, Target is great for its owners (its shareholders), but not so great for its customers. Amazon: great for its owners and its customers.

I didn't check Walmart or Target on line. They're probably just as good but I doubt they can possibly meet Amazon's delivery standards (time and quality of delivery).

Lana Del Rey.

Social media. It is absolutely amazing how many women (I suppose, women) absolutely swear by this singer, songwriter. They talk to her in their social media, her life, her lyrics. I haven't seen that with the other divas. Her fans seem willing to accept anything Lana Del Rey releases. The bigger story is all the leaked material. We saw that in Bob Dylan and The Beatles, but it seemed more controlled. There seems to be something different about the leaked-Lana-Del-Rey stuff. For one thing, unlike Bob Dylan and The Beatles, her leaded material is in "real time." Yes, I know, times are different.

I talked to our older adult daughter today about Lana Del Rey. She says her favorite, Bruce Springsteen, likes Lana Del Rey. Apparently Lana Del Rey mentioned Bruce Springsteen in one of her songs.

Petro-Hunt Getting Active In The Little Knife Oil Field -- June 20, 2021

Locator: 10020LK.

A Petro-Hunt Hagen well in the Little Knife oil field will be coming off the confidential list on Monday, June 21, 2021. See this post

The Little Knife oil field is tracked here. It has not been updated in a long, long time. It is so big, I may never get it fully updated. Most recent update:

June 20, 2021: this is a long, narrow oil field, running 32 miles from north to south, and average about eight miles (eight sections) wide. One would assume the geology is very similar throughout any individual field; in this case, I really have trouble accepting that. On another note, this field is in the vicinity of some great fields, but the Little Knife seems, so far, not be be all that great, and on top of that, not much activity to date. There was a lot of activity in this field early in the Bakken boom but it seemed to go quiet fairly quickly.

Petro-Hunt has some great wells in the Charlson oil field. Petro-Hunt is now getting active in the Little Knife oil field. It will be interesting to see how Petro-Hunt's Little Knife wells will compare with its Charlson wells.

Three wells of interest (getting ready to be updated? See this post):

  • 35809, loc/NC, Petro-Hunt, Sabrosky 144-97-7C-6-3H, Little Knife,
  • 35808, loc/NC, Petro-Hunt, Hagen 144-98-12D-1-3H, Little Knife,
  • 35807, conf, Petro-Hunt, Hagen 144-98-12D-1-2H, Little Knife,

Note: there is no Hagen 144-98-12D-1-1H; if there is, I did not find it.

A mile to the west of the Hagen wells is a Petro-Hunt Hurinenko well that runs parallel, south to north, along the Hagen wells, a nice well, but not a great well:

  • 33596, 710, Petro-Hunt, Hurinenko 144-98-11D-2-1H, Little Knife, t2/18; cum 181K 4/21;

What Is This All About -- Anas Alhajji -- June 20, 2021

Additional observations:

  • the first trend back in 2016 - 2017:
    • whatever the reason, it came after the trillion-dollar-Saudi mistake, the Saudi surge, 2014 - 2016, and then Saudi's response
    • one can argue that the first trend identified is simply nothing more than it takes a bit of time for the rig count to catch with reality
  • same thing with the 2020 - 2022: it takes awhile for the rig count to catch up with reality, and there are multiple reasons why it takes awhile for the rig count to catch up
  • apparently, the difference between the two periods; the price of oil plateaued before the rig count caught up; in the second period, the current period, the price of oil continues to rise quickly despite the rig count rising, and then inexplicably (for some) the rig count seems to be plateauing

The Discussion Changed In Less Than One Month -- No Longer Supply Decline, But Rather Demand Surge -- June 20, 2021

An analyst much smarter than I nailed it: just because there is a growing supply of crude oil, it doesn't mean there won't be a shortage. It's all about demand and the "ability" of operators to keep up with that demand.

It now appears that the US won't hit Biden's ridiculously low bar to have 70% of American immunized by July 4, 2021. Already, the president has pivoted: he now talks about the 150 million doses that have been administered. But that still leaves about 50% of Americans not fully vaccinated. Evenly split.

But even with that, the US is re-opening very, very quickly.

The rest of the world: it's estimated that about 3% of the rest of the world is fully vaccinated. Ouch. And I'm not talking about the literal jab.

Some stories from overnight about the demand surge:

  • from Bloomberg, empty oil tanks at key storage hub show speedy demand rebound; note the emphasis on demand, not supply;
  • also from Bloomberg, Big Oil's new problem isn't lack of demand, it's lack of supply; yes, a different emphasis, but it still stems from the demand surge; either that or everyone is lying about OPEC's spare capacity;
  • from S&P Global Platts: South Korea's crude oil imports from the US rise for the first time in 12 months in May, 2021
    • refiners buying a minimum of four VLCCs/month of US crude in 2021
    • light US grades ideal for raising middle distillate output yield (the Bakken is the lightest oil out there)
    • widening Brent-Dubai spread favors Middle Eastern, US crude purchases;the world's fifth-largest crude importer received 1.227 million mt, or 8.99 million barrels, of US oil in May, up from 7.41 million barrels a year earlier, the customs data showed. The country has been receiving more than 4 VLCCs/month from the US since February.
    • so, what's the vaccination status in South Korea? 25% of the country's population has gotten at least one jab (AstraZeneca; Pfizer; or Janssen
  • so much more at the Platts link

By the way, did anyone see the paradox in the Bloomberg article regarding empty storage tanks at Cushing and why that is occurring?

Coal Is Dead! Long Live Coal -- Merkel Wins -- June 20, 2021

[What's wrong with the subject heading; answer at end of post.]

Go back to this post.

At that post I posited that the German auto manufacturers know they need coal.

Knowing that explains the final energy communique of the G-7; and, it also explains how and why Angela Merkel "won" and John Kerry lost.

So, that was posted June 13, 2021. That was about seven days ago.

Four days ago Bloomberg provided corroboration.

This is the headline and the link: gas is so scare in Europe, coal is making a comeback. That's behind a paywall. Not only is it easy to get around the paywall, but in the process one finds some "better" sites that posted the story.

This is a discussion group over at alt.politics.usa.republican that has the article plus some great comments. Warning: adult language in heading.

Wattsupwiththat also has the story plus it's own commentary.

This reinforces that:

  • killing nuclear energy in Germany was perhaps the worst mistake Merkel made;
  • Germany is now so short of energy it had no choice but to sign with devil (making the country dependent on Russia) -- Nord Stream 2
  • the only other choice was to go back to caol
  • no one in the current administration wanted to give into Russia-Nord Stream 2- Germany but there was no choice -- it was a Hobson's choice.
  • my hunch, John Kerry reluctantly signed off on it before Joe Biden agreed
  • coal or natural gas from Russia
  • so, now if a year or two from now, there are headlines that Germany's use of coal is falling, one needs to check the amount of natural gas Russia is supplying Germany

From the linked articles above, some data points:

  • coal usage in the continent jumped 10% to 15% this year after a colder- and longer-than-usual winter left gas storage sites depleted
  • as economies reopen and people go back to the office, countries like Germany, the Netherlands and Poland turned to coal to keep the lights on
  • yesterday it was posted that US crude oil exports surged in April, with number one destination being the Netherlands
  • energy story in the EU, a huge setback: at the G-7, the world's biggest economies faled to set a firm date to end coal burning

And here it is:

Europe faced freezing temperatures earlier this year, boosting demand for
heating at a time liquefied natural gas cargoes were being sent to Asia
instead. Russia sent less gas to the continent via Ukraine ahead of the start
of the Nord Stream 2 link to Germany
, expected later this year.

All of that means that European storage is currently 25% below the five-year
average and benchmark Dutch gas surged more than 50% this year
.

"People thought Russia was going to book more capacity via Ukraine and that
just hasn't happened in a meaningful way," ...

Electricity demand, which crashed as the coronavirus locked down cities from
Frankfurt to London, is now back. Usage in countries including Germany, Spain
and the Czech Republic are above the five-year average, while demand is flat in
Italy and France, ...

With gas supplies already tight amid heavy maintenance cutting flows from
Norway, utilities have turned to coal to keep the lights on
. While the price of
carbon is trading near a record, many have hedged it years in advance. That
means burning coal could still be profitable.

Generators with "highly efficient" new plants can probably manage to produce
power from coal until 2023, even with high carbon prices, Axpo's Sommer said.

The G-7 recognized that coal is the single biggest cause of greenhouse gas
emissions in its final communique. But the group promised only to "rapidly
scale-up technologies and policies that further accelerate the transition away
from unabated coal capacity."

The heading says "Merkel wins." In fact, Putin/Russia won.
