Notes From All Over, The Nike Swoosh Edition -- Part 2 -- September 22, 2021

It's over. The September swoon -- looks just like the Nike swoosh.

The numbers:

  • DXY: 93.222, up slightly;
  • WTI: $71.45; up about a dollar; up 1.3%;
  • TYT: 1.329%, up very, very slightly;

Trade balance: I think a lot of folks saw this coming years ago. Again, this is why the EU, others want to stop the US energy boom and force the US to go green. Link here.

California:

  • water sources depleting
  • the governor called for a voluntary cut of 15%
  • in fact, overall, California saw only a 0.1% drop in water usage, but look at this:
  • water usage actually rose:
    • in Los Angeles, by 0.7%; and,
    • in San Diego, by 1.3%

California:

  • fires
  • the General Sherman tree was wrapped in first-resistant aluminum foil to protect it
  • by Tuesday, yesterday, September 22, 2021, the General Sherman tree, the largest tree in the world by volume, was relatively unscathed by the KNP Complex fire, as were the Four Guardsmen threes that stand at attention at the entrance to the Giant Forest

  • later: OKE up two percent in mid-morning trading;
  • later: OKE up over three percent in later-morning trading;

College rankings, annual, WSJ:

  • Here's the list of 800 schools:
  • the top ten are the usual, yawn; it's much more interesting to look at numbers 11 - 20; and then 21 through 100
  • Go through the list or look at them by typing in full name. Two that caught my eye:
    • Vanderbilt: 15, annual tuition: $52,000
    • USC: 19, annual tuition, $37,000
    • UCLA: 27
    • University of Texas, Austin: 60
  • of interest: at least two historically top California schools did not make the top 20! UC-Berkeley, at one time, would have competed to get to get to the top ten. Now, not even close. Bill Clinton appointees pretty much run UC-Berkeley now. Likewise, UCLA. Used to routinely outrank USC and could compete for a top ten slot. Didn't even make the top twenty list. But USC! Wow -- made the top 20 list. A party school?
  • UT-Austin: has had a historically great reputation ... but #60! This was not good. The new party school?
