  1. Hey Bruce. Any thoughts on Kraken drilling 3 mile laterals? Will other operators follow suit? I would think there could be substantial cost savings in the longer laterals.

    1. 1. Kraken has really had some great wells, suggesting they know what they are doing.

      2. If any operator can be successful with three-mile laterals, it would be Kraken.

      3. Slawson also has had success with three-mile laterals, if I recall correctly, but they were necessitated by the river / lake.

      4. Yes, experts have run the numbers and three-mile laterals are more cost-effective than two mile laterals. I believe the analyses were done in the Permian.

      5. The fact that so few three-mile laterals have been drilled in the Bakken suggests there are challenges: both with the drilling -- keeping the well bore in the target zone for three miles, and then the effectiveness of the frack.

      6. My hunch: the 1280 (two-mile lateral) remains the "norm" in the Bakken but periodically we will see the three-mile laterals.

      7. I assume mineral owners prefer shorter laterals / small drilling units for obvious reasons, but at the end of the day, it probably doesn't matter.
