Idle Rambling On A Saturday Night -- Nothing About The Bakken -- September 12, 2020

This really is a great country. So many opportunities. The human experience. I've posted more about the Sturgis Rally than I had ever expected. I was thinking about it again tonight and then randomly, Alexa popped up with this song:

Ride, Lana Del Rey

I don't recall when I first heard it. I could check the journals, but not worth effort right now.

I do remember this. I was on a cross-country trip from home in either south Texas (San Antonio) or north Texas (Grapevine/DFW) and on my way to Williston. In fact, I think I was on the return trip, coming back from Williston to Texas. I knew I would need some music to get me through Nebraska. I stopped at a Target on the east (?) side of Rapid City, SD, to buy two or three Lana Del Ray CDs.

Tonight's TCM Movie

Experiment Perilous, starring George Brent and Hedy Lamarr.

Released the same year as George Cukor's Gaslight (1944). Uncannily similar.

But I reminded of Hedy Lamarr and her background. From wiki:

At the beginning of World War II, Lamarr and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes, intended to use frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers.

She also helped improve aviation designs for Howard Hughes while they dated during the war.

Although the US Navy did not adopt Lamarr and Antheil's invention until 1957, various spread-spectrum techniques are incorporated into Bluetooth technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of Wi-Fi.

Recognition of the value of their work resulted in the pair being posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

Danger Signal

The film noir Danger Signal follows.

A deranged cop travels the country seeking out felons and their femme fatales and urges them to use their turn signals even when fleeing from the police. I cannot make this up. At least that's what the presenter says about this movie. We'll see.

Re-Posting Books To Ease Your Wanderlust -- September 12, 2020

See this note: the best "wanderlust" books

From that post:

This is so cool. From The WSJ: the best books to ease your wanderlust. I was mostly curious to see if any of "my" books were on that list, and some were, and some very surprising books made the list. I'm impressed.

"My" books that made the list, WSJ readers' favorite travel books, alphabetically by author:

  • James Boswell’s The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides With Samuel Johnson -- highly recommended for oldest granddaughter;
  • William Least Heat-Moon’s Blue Highways
  • Jack Kerouac’s On the Road
  • Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild
  • Robert Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance -- my all-time favorite, have read it several times;
  • John D. Tumpane’s Scotch and Holy Water -- unbelievable to see this made the list; I bought several copies years ago, worried it may go out of print;
  • Rebecca West’s Black Lamb and Grey Falcon

A reader alerted me to Amazon and Scotch and Holy Water:

I'll take this opportunity to comment on Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Great title, but a bit misleading or maybe a lot misleading. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would until my fourth or fifth reading (over many years) and by that time I was reading it very, very slowly to really enjoy the message and the writing.

That Surge In Covid-19 Cases In North And South Dakota -- September 12, 2020

I keep reading that there's been a surge of Covid-19 cases in the Dakotas. I would expect that — a surge in cases —for any number of reasons.

But I keep looking for change in stats regarding "deaths / million population" and I'm not seeing it.

Remember: we're well past the 14-day quarantine period following the Sturgis Rally, August 6 - August 17, 2020. Way past the quarantine period. We're a full month out.

These are the "deaths / million population" stats:

Mark Your Calendars -- Halloween For Citgo -- September 12, 2020

This is absolutely fascinating.

Citgo.

Link here.

Venezuela's crown jewel, Citgo, is controlled by "mainstream opponents" of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. These "mainstream opponents" have controlled Citgo since early 2019.

Citgo is in default of a 2020 bond.

  • the 8.5 percent interest bond matures on October 27, 2020
  • bondholders are owed just less than $2 billion on that date
  • bondholders include Ashmore, Fidelity, T Rowe Price, and others
  • the bond's collateral: 50.1% ownership of Citgo

Citgo and its "owners" appear to be in default to the tune of $914 million due a year ago, October. The foreclosure has been put on hold through legal maneuvers extending the deadline every ninety days.

Citgo and its "owners" argue the bond should be invalidated because it was never approved by the National Assembly in Caracas --

  • that argument has gained no traction:
  • besides being outright theft, it would set a precedent for other foreign issuers to walk away from their US obligations based on political changes at home

Then, a lot of legalese and lot of politics.

Due to the presidential election, the "suspension" preventing foreclosure is likely to be renewed for another ninety days. But by January, 2021, the issue will have lost its campaign values, making it easier for bondholders to foreclose on Citgo.

Two other players, Crystallex and COP are in the mix, but both seem in a less advantageous position than the bondholders.

At the end of the day, this is as much a political story (and the likely end of Maduro's opposition (Juan Guaido) as a financial story.

My hunch: a clever judge will thread the needle.

Hurricane Watch -- September 12, 2020

There is so much fake news out there, I can no longer make sense of even some of the most basic "stuff," like hurricanes. From my perspective this has been a most uneventful hurricane season to date, even including "lo-impact, no-impact Laura." But then we get, see second paragraph in note below:

 Link here.

The Atlantic’s 18th storm is coming together off Florida’s eastern coast and will drift west into the oil-rich Gulf of Mexico over the weekend where it could reach nearly hurricane strength before coming ashore.

When the storm’s winds reach 39 miles (63 kilometers) per hour it will likely be named Sally. That would mark the earliest that 18 storms have formed in the Atlantic during a hurricane season, breaking the previous record set by Stan in October 2005, said Phil Klotzbach, lead author of the Colorado State University seasonal hurricane forecast. It is possible a second system in the far eastern Atlantic will be named first.

“The system is forecast to strengthen to near hurricane intensity by early next week as it moves across the northeastern Gulf of Mexico,” Eric Blake, a hurricane forecaster, wrote in his outlook.

In addition to the depression, which has sparked a tropical storm watch in southern Florida, the hurricane center is watching three other potential storms -- one in the Gulf of Mexico and two off the coast of Africa. On top of that, Tropical Storms Paulette and Rene are churning through the central Atlantic. Paulette will likely become a hurricane and could strike Bermuda Monday.
