Worst Business Headline Ever? -- October 29, 2020

Probably not, but certainly in "the running" for that honor -- worse business headline ever. LOL.

Link here.

A reader sent me the link. My not-ready-for-prime-time:

What an awful headline? LOL.
  • earnings exceed expectations
  • iPhone 12 sales had not even begun in quarter that earnings just released
  • all four (4) iPhone 12 models have not even been released yet (or if they have, it's only been in the last couple of weeks)
  • I would expect iPhone sales to have dipped greatly in most recent quarter in anticipation of new iPhone 12 being released in this quarter -- well, duh
  • most folks on social media think the iPhone 12 will be a runaway hit
  • next quarter (current quarter) is historically Apple's strongest quarter -- holiday sales
  • Apple seldom (if ever) gives guidance; that's not news;
    • at this point, even if Apple gave guidance, they have no idea how the iPhone will do; it went only sale in October -- hey, that's this month
  • let's see, CNBC and MSNBC -- competitor of Apple;
The only two facts I saw:
  • earnings slightly exceeded expectations
  • STRONG iPad, iMac sales
Folks may not know, or remember, but it was only a few years ago, that most folks thought desktops were "dead." But look at that: "strong" iMac sales. iMacs are desktops. Macbooks are laptops. I assume a lot of desktops were sold specifically due to such things as distance learning and telemedicine due to the pandemic. Everything suggests that local auto dealers will be putting large desktop Apple computers at the desks of their sales people as more and more business is done on line. Tesla showrooms, for example, have featured Apple desktops exclusively since the very beginning.

Only opinion going forward: iPhone 12 is going to be a runaway hit (based on other social media sources)

Prior to next quarter Apple earnings, I will be adding to my AAPL holdings, if:
  • indications are accurate that iPhone 12 will be a runaway success;
  • there are indications that AAPL raises its dividend or returns cash back to investors in other ways (stock buybacks, for example)
  • there's a significant pullback in the price of AAPL
Later, I will expand on this if I don't forget:
  • Apple receives $12 to $14 billion annually from Alphabet for Apple to use Google as its search engine;
  • tea leaves: huge opportunity for Apple going forward;
