Notes From All Over -- The Early Afternoon Edition -- August 28, 2020

Back to the pop quiz from earlier this morning:

Quick, pop quiz. Background: back in 1973, when total global energy supply was more than half the current supply, coal held a share of 24.5%; oil, 46.2%; and, natural gas, 16%.

Now, fast forward to 2018, the most recent year for IEA data. Match the 2018 percent with the fuel:

  • fuel:
    • oil
    • natural gas
    • coal
  • share of total global economy:
    • 31.6%
    • 26.9%
    • 22.8%

    • coal has increased from 24.5% to 26.9%;
    • natural gas has increased from 16% to 22.8%;
    • oil has decreased from 46.2% to 31.6%

Also of note, the percent of these fossil fuels contributed to full energy consumption:

  • 1973: 86.7% (rounds to 90%)
  • 2018: 81.3% (rounds to 80%)
