Emmylou Harris Over At PowerLine While Compiling The Wells That Will Come Off The Confidential List This Next Week -- April 5, 2020

Wow, what a treat. Over at PowerLine, Emmylou Harris. At one time I knew much of the story but have long forgotten it (the story). I was sure that I had posted something about Gram Parsons, but I guess I have not. What a treat to re-read the story. It's a pain to click back-and-forth on the YouTube videos while reading the story, but then I remembered what Sophia would do --she would read the story but would ask Alexa to play Emmylou Harris. LOL. So, here we go.

Third day in a row, overcast, cool (feels cold), rain -- wow, this spring is sure dragging out. There certainly is no sign of global warming in this part of the God's little earth.

The Last Picture Show

I saw it for the first time ever, last night on TCM.

My notes as I started watching:

• Wichita Falls
• north Texas
• November
• cold
• basketball as opposed to football
• townspeople upset they lost their basketball game the previous evening
• sound track Hank Williams, SR
• first thought: American Graffitti (1973)
• Last Picture Show: 1971
• begins with going to the town's one movie theater
• chewing gum
• 1951 movie with Elizabeth Taylor; "A Place In The Sun"?
• Cybil
• Last Picture Show: 1951 -- Korea
• American Graffitti: 1962 -- Vietnam
• cars
• main street
• Rig-Wam Drive In
• Dr Pepper: Sonny at Cloris Leachman's house
• sort of reminds me of a Coen Bros movie; period, regional film
• dance; Cybil (Jacy) driving to dance -- so "American Graffiti"
• one can almost match various Last Picture Show scenes with American Graffitti scenes
• from a "film" point of view, Last Picture Show much better than American Graffitti
• movie theater in town = Mel's Diner
• best sound track ever? for country 
• both pictures introduced a number of actors/actresses that went on to become quite famous

This morning:

• American Graffitti, easy to watch; can easily watch more than once; a feel good movie, captures California love for cars, dragging main street, coming of age with no sex, no nudity;  don't recall ever being "bored" watching any of it; alcohol but comic scene; could watch with family; color; when all said and done, I had good feeling for each of the different characters, each one very distinctive; forward looking;

• The Last Picture Show: a difficult movie to watch; subject matter much darker; captures dying Texas town so very, very well; at times moved a bit slowly; more of a Coen Bros dark period piece; soft porn in the eyes of some; lots of sex; nudity; no drugs, no alcohol (with one short, inconsequential exception); I don't recall many "light" moments; overall, depressing? black and white; when all said and done, the men all seemed to blend together; the women fell into two different groups, young and pretty, coming of age; the second group, older, wiser, burned out, dead end;
