  1. This reminds me of the late 90s, when I was a grad student and took a Steelcase desk home from the lab (which was being remodeled, 1940s era building, with literally NO AIR CONDITIOINING...prof had to buy his own for the labs).

You know the sort of desk I'm talking about. Battleship grey. Nuclear hardened (figuratively, but almost literally). Indestructible. Just need some green Federal registers and those black ballpoint pens with the silver band to make you feel like you're in some old military base.

Anyhow, after three guys (and strong young guys) carried it up to my third floor apartment, I went and took out every drawer and cleaned all the nooks and crannies and greased the mechanisms. Behind one of the drawers, I find an old telephone bill from the 1950s. It was HAND WRITTEN. And the long distance charges were in the dollars per call. 1950s dollars! You whippersnappers with your i-phones have no idea. ;-)

P.s. Desk is still in my home office. Movers complain every time I move. I refuse to replace it with some beautiful modern thing, even though money no longer an issue.

    1. I know exactly what you are talking about. No question that US Dept of Defense was making US Steel great! LOL.
